And I'm not 80. Yet.

But the family do fuss about me, especially my sons who tell me I'm too old for it. I can look after myself.

Pleased he is safe, I read this on Grough when he first went missing. He is more or less a Geordie, being from Tynemouth so he will be very hardy

I am surprised an "experienced hiker" could not walk himself out of that area.  The area has plenty of paths and shooters' track and is bounded by roads on all sides.  Moreover. the "off piste" is fairly gnarly so you tend not to stray off the path in the first place.  I think there is more to it, perhaps the fall?

What a strange story.I would have thought any walking group would have kept an eye on an 80 year old and made sure they were keeping up.How long was it before they realised he was missing?

Probably fancied a bit of quiet time away from the family realy so ducked under a bush and hid.

Whilst I usually prefer to walk by myself, historically when walking with a group I always had a map and compass with me and would check up on our position frequently -  not relying on the "leader" to know where we were! Am I unusual (no need to answer that one) or would others always take some form of equipment when walking with a group to make sure that they could find their way if they became separated from the group? I see it as a safety issue the same as having first aid/warm clothing etc. and more to the point if I did become separated how would I find the pub!
