Trying to identify a site in the Lake District
« on: 19:52:46, 23/11/18 »
Hi all,

Sorry to jump in here, but since so many of you seem quite knowledgeable about this part of the world I was wondering if I could request your aid in perhaps identifying a place in the Lake District where I walked around 20 years ago (!). I will attach a photo below which I suspect I took in about 1998. I have some suspicion it may be from the area around Whinlatter Pass but I am unsure and after flicking through photos and google maps of recent I can't really confirm it is that. I am however, fairly sure I stayed in the Bassenthwaite area, though I did travel a lot.

If anyone has a clue which hills are in the image or just generally whereabouts I was here, I'd be grateful. It'd be really nice to come back soon, it's been a long time...

My guess is Troutbeck Tongue.

Do I win a prize if I am right?

Hi,

I agree with Ridge. Troutbeck tongue was the first location that came into my head.
Photo taken from the A592,  I'd say, particularly with the foreground hubcap!

Is that the Yoke/Ill Bell - range in the background ?

hubcap sounds a bit 'transatlantic'   :D   :D
Only a hill but all of life to me, up there between the sunset and the sea.

Yep, I reckon so, up to Thornthwaite Crag. The western side of the Kentmere horseshoe.

Not sure how I achieved the font size change thingy.

I thought I had a reverse photo of the same view looking down from Thornthwaite Crag but I cant find it just now, though that could be because it is actually a proper photograph. Here is the nearest I've got showing the other side of the same hills.

The picture was probably taken from a tiny little lay-by overlooking The Tongue, you often see people risking life and limb standing in the road  :o

I'm still racking my brain to remember what my dad called them (on his Hillman Super Minx):- I think it is wheel disk (stand to be corrected by our older readers  ;) ).

The least time I was up there was with my son and we'd scrambled up Rainsbarrow Crag from Kentmere. T'was a fabulous day together, with a bit of everything.

Ah, that sounds right  O0  My, an A35 - that would be worth a fortune if you still had it.

I also wondered that.
Sometimes it is annoying if people ask one question and disapear but, in this thread, we've chatted about the Lakes and then wandered in to a conversation about hub-caps.

Perhaps the O/P wanted to know the location as that's where he had lost a wheel trim  :D
