Size 8 1/2 - 9 Ladies boot?
« on: 08:51:58, 22/10/18 »
My wife has big feet (there, I've said it!). She is a wide size 8. I want to get her some walking boots and of course manufacturers seem to stop at size 8. By the time she has walking socks on that is not going to work.

I don't think a men's boot is a good idea (is it?) so I am wondering if anyone knows of a ladies boot in larger sizes?

As ninthace points out most Altberg Women's Boots start at Size 3 and go up in half sizes to Size 8½.

The Fremington and Tethera are built on Altberg's standard last and available in 5 width fittings (XN, N, Med, W, XW) whilst the Malham and Nordkapp are built on the A Forme last in one medium width fitting. It's probably worth trying models built on both lasts before making a final choice.

You can find your nearest Altberg retailer here https://www.altberg.co.uk/stockists/ Look for the Premier Retailers with the red flags on the map as they tend to carry a wider range of stock and the boot fitting staff have been trained by the Altberg Factory. It's crucial that you get properly measured before buying.

Depending on where you are based in the country a visit to a professional boot fitter such as Whalley Warm & Dry https://www.whalleyoutdoor.co.uk/boot-fitting-service/ would probably be advised. They are an Altberg Premier Retailer and their customers travel from all over the country to use their boot fitting skills and services and I cannot recommend their boot fitting services highly enough and they are highly recommended by many other forum members.

Other wider fitting boots in larger sizes which may be worth looking at are

The main difference between men's and women's shoe sizes, apart from the fact that they don't run true together so a man's 7 will be a woman's 8, is that men's shoes are wider. Perhaps this is the answer to her problems.

Thanks @Ridge. I thought that there was quite a difference between a mens boot and a ladies (as, apparently, our feet are different) and that wearing a mens was a no, no.

I only wear a size 7.5 walking boot but mu main boots are men's not women's. If they fit they fit. Why would it be a no no?

Apparently the differences between men and women's feet is significant enough for a well designed boot to need to take that into consideration. Various websites explain it but this gives the basic details (add https:// to the beginning - the forum won't let me post links):

Totally agree with you that if it is comfortable for you it doesn't matter if it was made for a martian, comfort is all! But, as I am needing to make an online purchasing decision then I was trying to cover all possible pitfalls.

Thanks, that's really interesting. The only reason I went for men's boots is that my big toes are folding over the ones next to them and the joint sticks out, which doesn't work in narrow women's boots. Maybe this can be my excuse to shell out for Altbergs next time  ;)
