With a good forecast on offer, Saturday's walk saw me take in two summits in the southern Mournes: Slievemartin and Knockshee. If there is one region of the Mournes which bears any resemblance to the Lakeland fells (my favourite region) it would be the southern Mournes. The views across Carlingford lough to county Louth from Slievemartin and Knockshee are amongst the best views offered by the Mournes. Starting from Rostrevor I followed the path through Kilbroney forest to the CLoughmore boulder stone. The first half hour of the walk is fairly unrelenting but thereafter levels out before the final stretch of the summit of Slievemartin. The summit can be gained within 1.25 hours from the car park. The reward for the hard work of ascent is uninterrupted views across Carlingford Lough to Slieve Foye. After admiring the views I headed across damp terrain to Knockshee. The walk is fairly flat with minimal ascent. Upon reaching Knockshee views opened up of the higher Mournes in the east. I retraced my steps to the summit of Slievemartin before descending Kilbroney forest to the car park. Total distance was just over 10km.
