No camping for us at the weekend, the weather forecast was for heavy rain and lots of it after 12pm on Saturday with the risk of flooding. We had a bimble from Keswick along the shore path toward Cat Gill.

It was quite nice weather, better than we expected, no rain and light winds with mist in places, enhancing the photos. There were very few people about at 9.30, we were surprised we thought it would be busy.

This swan was better behaved and stayed upright.

There were more people in boats, canoes and kayaks on the lake than people walking on the shore.

The ducks kept us company during our lunch. We'd stopped here and had a brew and some food before returning to Keswick for our bus. We realised all the people had just come late, it was really busy on the way back. Shame the latecomers had missed the best weather. It had started raining just after 12 just like the forecast said. Our bus was late due to the traffic build up, getting in and out of Keswick was difficult. A wonder it was so busy with the weather forecast. Our walk was about six miles from the bus station - Hope Park - shore path - Cat Gill lunch spot and return. A pretty good morning walk and we didn't get wet :)
No photos from Sunday, we did a six miler in Bitts Park and Rickerby Park along the River Eden after I ordered myself a bike in town from Halfords (nice staff, very helpful O0). If I can manage to stay upright on it ( :-\ ) I am hoping to be able to cycle to work and back. I moved work location in May and using the bus service it is taking about one hour and 5 minutes to get to work and one hour and 20 minutes to get back, even more if the traffic is bad. On a bike it will take me 35 minutes each way. Unless I keep falling off it ;D There are shared use pavements most of the way so I won't be affected by traffic jams. I am getting the bike on Friday and if I get enough practise on it I will be cycling to work next week.
-
So you are joining the ranks of those damn cyclists! Boooooooooo ;D ;D Nice lake shots, 30 yrs since I been there. :)

Lovely pics.
Good luck with the cycling. I used to be able to cycle to work years ago and loved it, what ever the time, weather or traffic the journey always took the same time.
-
Beautiful pictures April :) Good luck with the cycling!

A Byker eh O0

Nice photos, reminds me just what I've been missing these past couple of months.
-
Good luck with the cycling, April - a great way of keeping fit.
You'll be galloping up the hills leaving Beefy in your wake.
-
I'm also getting into cycling, I started off doing it for exercise for my knee, just on my old bike. Now I've even been and brought a fancy new bike. It's very addictive.
-
Very good pictures from such a dismal day O0

Thanks Dovegirl :)

Thanks RGW :)

I already do :D ;)
I've even been and brought a fancy new bike. It's very addictive.
:) I'm hoping it wont have any adverse affects on my dodgy left knee and arthritic hips. It is great getting old. I hope you don't buy too many more bikes :D
I never did. There I said it :(
Thanks vghikers, I feel as if I've never been on a bike either :D
I am a cyclist too ;D
I hope I do better on my bike than your companion did on your recumbent (is that how you spell it?) ;D

In my experience, cycling is pretty easy on the leg joints. I injured my knee many years ago, the after effects of which dragged on for years afterwards, but no ill effects at all whilst mountain biking.
In fact, I'll be in the market for a mountain bike after I have completed my move south. Roads, forest tracks and practicable bridleways only, of course! Quite fancy doing some more Trailquest mountain bike orienteering events.
-
Thanks Richard, I had heard cycling is better than walking if you have dodgy knees and hips :)
I hope your move goes smoothly.
-
Thanks April - looking forward to it. Orkney has been good to us for 18 years, but it is time to move on - and the fells beckon!

I am a cyclist too ;D

To be honest my mate next door had the chopper and I had a Molton Mini. Long before I got a 5 speed racer of course :-[

A recumbent bike. I used to cycle to work, quicker than bus/car and no parking problems. A fellow worker had a recumbent bike but it did look a bit of an art to ride one. Think I will stay with my normal bike
-
Never tried a recumbent bike but have to say it doesn't look that comfortable a riding position.

Recumbents are very comfortable
Your weight spread over a large area, rather than a conventional saddle O0
-
I was thinking more of the riders back, rather than the bum.
-
I got my bike and I managed to ride it without beefy having to hold the saddle for balance. I'm still a bit wobbly and I need more practise, I will have another ride about on Sunday afternoon after we come back from Lakes. I'm going to ride it to work on Monday but I will give myself plenty of time to get there ;D
-
Recumbents are very comfortable and efficient, from what I have heard.
I just don't fancy my head being at exhaust pipe level!
-
..and good luck on Monday, April.
-
You could do a trip report of your bike ride to work. I'd read it. :) It would be a novelty.
-
I haven't used my bike to get to work as yet :( I am a danger to myself and other people at the minute.
I nearly went head first into a ditch and then I fell of it on another practise session. I got back on it last night and managed to keep in a straight line for 30ft without too much wobbling. I didn't fall off.
Rob any TR would read
Wobbled for 20 feet, fell off, got back on and wobbled for another 20 feet, fell off and repeat ;D
I am determined to master this cycling malarkey, I will be back out tonight for another practise.
-
You can do it! The "got back on", "repeat" and "determined" is all that's usually required. O0
Good luck!
-
I missed this one. Nice write up and piccies April.
Good luck with the cycling too. If you're struggling, perhaps you could get some stabilisers :D :o
-
Thanks Rob and Mel :)
I have looked into stabilisers ;D They don't work with bikes with gears for some stupid reason or I would get some ;D
Rain has stopped play, no bike practise tonight, it is chucking it down :(

Same here, It might help if you have somewhere to go to. Even if it's just around the block. just having some kind of goal can help.
-
Perhaps three (https://i.pinimg.com/736x/72/86/87/7286878f09184e8e52b9b660b0462900--vintage-cycles-victorian-women.jpg) wheels are better than two, April :D
Seriously - stick with it - cycling is great once you have mastered it :)
-
Owen, sadly the rain was too heavy so I didn't get out last night. It it better weather for this evening so I am going to practise for longer tonight.
Richard, I did consider getting a trike! I do hope I can get the hang of it, I look at all the cyclists I am seeing everywhere now with envy.
