Nice one. I've read to day 4 so far but have now had to stop.  Will read the rest later tonight and compare your route to my planned one, might pinch some of your ideas  O0

Good read John, interesting little diversions too. I note you took the Swainsby route after Ing X, the route you recommended to me and the other two lads at the Bluebell some years ago. After my C2C fairly recently, I had forgotten how much ascent there was through those wooods on the official route and was wishing i had done the same this time, although I did want to follow AW's route.I am having big problems with my left thigh/hip flexor area at the moment which is preventing much walking. Did Chyropratic treatment really help? I have a feeling it may be osteoarthritis of the hip.Just a note to finish - the stream from Dunmail to Grisedale Tarn is Riase Beck, not High Raise. Talking of alternative routes this trace goes up the "alternative" route to Nine Standards and comes down the conventional route.

Just finished reading it, great TR and made a few tweaks to my planned route for next year  O0

First of all guys, sorry about the TR formatting. I am useless at this sort of stuff and seem to have loaded all my blogs onto both this report and the Dales Way TR loaded today too. The C2C layout is not as I intended and the DW pics seem not to have loaded. So it is back to the Drawing Board. I fine this aspect of my walking really frustrating >:(. If the blog is ok with you let me know.
Anyway, Chiropractic seems to work for me Dave. He tells me I am getting an arthritic (right) hip. This has presented as an ache in the lower back that progresses to a sciatic type pain in the front of my thigh which hurts when I stretch forwards or upwards. It started last winter. This is probably why I have been getting compensatory pains in my right knee for the last couple of years. He basically loosens me up once a month now (after an intense initial treatment period) and this includes quite a sore massaging of my thigh muscle. The solution it seems is just to keep using it as long as it works; no real benefit in not walking.
Re the walk itself. Having done it 4 times previously I was looking for a bit of variety; hence some of the variations (Swainby was because my hip was playing up and walked along the railway out of St Bees because I was late). I liked the Wythburn route although if you are doing it for the first time Jon, I guess the standard route has interest although there is some tarmac around Grasmere. Wythburn is a couple of miles shorter and I fancied a couple of beers in Patterdale on a Friday evening! I would definitely recommend the High Raise - Measand Beck variation. You keep high and the views are superb. The standard route by contrast is a bit hemmed in alongside Haweswater.
My "short" day to Keld was well worth it for the place I stayed that night. Keld to Richmond makes a decent days walk out of two short ones and the Swale is very pretty on a sunny day.
I would not follow the standard route along the roads to Danby Wiske; I would keep to the farm tracks from Ellerton Hill; much easier on the feet.
You do save a bit of climbing out of Ingleby Cross as Dave says by going through Swainby; but I would normally follow the former if your legs are working as you can get to Blakey Ridge easily enough by teatime (stopping at Clay Bank seems a bit pointless too).
I do like to finish from the Lion in one day and enjoyed a bit of the cross country stuff. With an early start you can complete the "official " route including the Hawsker loop by early evening.
I think I tried a bit of your 9 standards route in 2013 Ninthace when I stayed at a B&B on the Nateby Road; managed to get lost near a farmstead en-route to the Fell Path whilst trying to locate a stile over a wall!
I enjoyed the walk and the company along the way. Familiarity does make it seem easier but like an old shoe it is every comfortable and I may well do it again. That said the call of the PW is beginning to make itself heard again.

I've had no issues with formatting viewed on a tablet, haven't tried it on my PC yet as I had my route loaded so I could follow that and your TR  O0

Like the sound of the High Raise route so will look at that more closely, cheers.  Also the Swainby one seems fairly sensible as we have a long day from the Bluebell Inn.

Edit:  Just tried it on my PC running Win7 and it seems fine

The formatting is not a problem on my PC running Windows 10. If you're thinking of the spaces between paragraphs they're fine - not a distraction from an excellent TR at all.

Brilliant and detailed TR with great photos and really enjoyed reading it as it brought back many memories from walking it 8 years ago and a route I would like to walk again sometime. I thought the formatting was fine and the content is far more important than layout.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post.

Really enjoyed reading that …………...and then your SWCP and Dales Way and Offas Dyke …………...and then it was past my bed time  :(
What better way to fill a miserable wet cold ridden day :)

Great read - thanks for posting.  Perhaps inspired by chatting with Slogger Dav on his recent C2C, I've just arranged to do this next May (though over a much more leisurely 11 days), so your write up has helped me in my planning - ta! I will probably revisit as I plan days, pubs etc.  Paul

Thanks for the positive comments. I am glad that people generally enjoy the write ups. The C2C does allow you to juggle about easily with your itinerary; although less so in the east. I have never done an 11 day crossing Paul so it will be interesting to see what you come up with. The bit I have never really come to terms with is the Ingleby - Clay Bank day; because it is a half day and a bit of a hassle, by the sound of it, to walk down off the hill and mooch about in one of the villages below for the afternoon. Ploughing onto Blakey/Farndale makes more sense but then you are left with quite a long last day (or two very short ones); especially if you don't want to stay overnight at RHB upon completion. On one occasion I did an extra day and walked down to Scarborough from RHB to get transport home under my own steam. That was fun.
I would definitely recommend the High Raise - Measand option over walking alongside the full length of Haweswater; even for a first crossing. The massive views made it feel like you were literally climbing down off the edge of the Lake District and into the next phase of the journey. Wythburn is worth a shout too; the walk in down Grizedale is a long one and I feel that I have already done one such walk earlier in the day down Easedale. Wythburn is quieter and a bit of a challenge; you get to Patterdale an hour earlier too.
Another day I thought about but never planned is Kirkby Stephen to Keld then heading up to some of the lead mine route and working your way off the moor down to Gunnerside for the night ( think there are still beds for the night there)
Anyway; enjoy your planning
John

I'm going from Ingleby to Lion Inn, then splitting the rest into two days.

Going to do that, looks great in Google Earth!

Still considering this one but ideally want to take the high route over Helm Crag :)

For an alternative from High Raise try the first half of this route. http://www.haroldstreet.org.uk/routes/download/?walk=2631 (http://www.haroldstreet.org.uk/routes/download/?walk=2631)

That misses the wonderful ridge walk though from High Raise to Measand ... and is longer  ;)

Good calls Jon. There is something to be said for the Helm Crag definitely. Littlebeck may be a good place to stop; then it is just a half day walk in to RHB

A great read. I can confirm that Fletcher House in Kirkby Stephen is a wonderful stopover, one of our favourite place on our C2C 7 years ago. In fact we tried to book it for a weekend in September on our way back from Scotland as we wanted to do Nine Standards again as we had no views at all when we were there before. Unfortunately and as expected they were fully booked, but we stayed at the Nateby Inn which was fine and did a circular walk from there. We got the views this time, but it was still boggy!

Yes John, defo worth a thought. Ive done that exact line in reverse from Gunnerside, actually a circular along the lower level C2C from Keld to Gunnerside then up the fell and linked up to the higher level route and followed in reverse back to Keld.Dave (Slogger)

When I went through Gunnerside this May, I had a quick look up past the bridge before crossing it and saw a fingerpost up to the left pointing straight up the shoulder of the Fell. Guess that's it Dave?

Only the second time in 5 attempts that I got in...it is a good place!

Yes John that's the one, a grass track leading up to an improved track.
