Park Safely It might cost you otherwise
« on: 10:37:33, 07/05/19 »
In today's article in the Western Mail, Gwynedd Council have dished out fines totally just over £8000 in four days.
I wonder how many vehicles were booked, by not displaying a valid ticket, or parking where it was obvious that they posed a danger to other vehicles.

Either way, that's a lot of revenue, in such a short time.

What a pity, if they had driven less than half a mile, on the Conwy side, they would have not received a parking ticket.

Still, its hardly the best way to encourage tourism to Snowdonia.

Although I'm in favour of fining folks for poor / illegal parking; you've got to wonder whether the signage / markings are clear if that level of fines have been levied in such a short period time.Smacks of entrapment really.

I agree, signage is far better than it has been years ago, probably due to parking being outsourced and the private company is no longer able to enforce a ticket like a Council can so signage is more important to secure a 'conviction'.. Councils on the other hand are still not the best at signage but that, sometimes, is down to the Highways agency to paint the appropriate lines on the road or posts erected.. Also Private Company's have enforcement officers or ANPR, Councils often don't have either of these but then their car parks are generally cheaper.. Car Parking is getting ridiculous in some areas, fewer spaces, costing more, no on road parking or Permit only.. We recently had a week in the Lake District and got around using the Bus but this was because there was free parking where we stayed, we couldn't have done this if we had to pay for parking, we would have had no choice but to drive all week and not use the Bus.. The Lake District aside, getting around to start walks in the Country don't often have parking so finding a quiet lane to park in is the Polar opposite to built up areas, but could still leave your vehicle open to a ticket or being towed..
Gone for a walk, back in a bit..

The signage opposite the Pen Y Gwrydd hotel could not be clearer.

Pay & Display on the Gwynedd side, below Pen Y Pass, is a fairly new addition, having been introduced in the last couple of years.

You can clearly see the Pay and Display meters, and the designated parking areas, and the Gwynedd parking rules and regulations are clearly displayed.

Granted, parking is limited along the stretch of the Capel Curig to Beddgelert road,  but there is no excuse for poorly parked vehicles.

The same issues are there in and around the Storey Arms in the Brecon Beacons, motorists are almost inviting a parking fine.

Its obvious that in and around a National Park, installing huge parking areas, carving up large areas of greenery, is not an option.

I agree though, £8000 is a lot of money, in a fairly short time, but walkers and owners of vehicles surely must realise, parking in undesignated areas, will incur a fine.

The lure of the majestic hills must be so great, that its an expense worth taking for many, but few motorists realise that on the Conwy side, there are no parking restrictions.

Ive often noticed the small carpark beyond the Conwy authority notice sign, is not always full, when closer to the Pen Y Gwyrydd, you can see drivers desperately looking for a parking spot.

People know the parking situation is awful there and actually factor in the cost of the parking ticket, split between 4 people its really not that much to pay.

This happens every year in Brecon at pen y fan as well, makes you wonder why the council dont build a big car park away from the area and put on a park and ride shuttle bus. Upgrade the facilities at the car parks so theres somewhere nice to wait for the shuttle bus back as well.

This is a lesson in how not to park in a way that annoys the local farmer. Parking on both sides (it is normal to park on just the one side) of country lane cul de sac leading to Seathwaite farm in Borrowdale, Cumbria. The farmer needed to get his vehicle and Sheep trailer through, so eventually just charged through, writing off a few cars.https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipPjGjQhtI5HNq8F7v1Aaz9DsEaBx1nflk79bv49
