Title: Pen y Fan from Cwm Gwdi and Chartist Caves from Trefil
Post by: clyoung on 22:26:30, 18/02/17
Have managed two walks so far this year in the Brecon Beacons National Park. A few weeks ago my eldest and I went up Pen y Fan from Cwm Gwdi:

Then on Thursday both my sons and I walked to the summit of Mynydd Llangynidr and visited the Chartist Caves starting from Trefil:

Very good Claire  :)  In all the times I've used the path from Cwm Gwdi I've never seen many people and never a mountain bike! No wonder I mostly avoid the central beacons these days. The chartist cave I've been to from both Trefil and Llangynidr and made circular walks out of, didn't see another soul.

There were quite a few bikers, but it didn't seem to be an organised event. Once we got down to Cwm Llwch we didn't see anyone else.

No, that's my son. 14 and taller than me!

One of the best routes to Pen y Fan in my book, and some great pics, thanks  O0

I think I'd agree. Went up from the A470 on my previous two visits to the summit, plus have climbed up as far as the Tommy Jones' memorial from Cwm Llwch. Am planning on doing the horseshoe from the Lower Neuadd Reservoir to finish off the 2000 footers in the National Park so then I'll have tried all the obvious routes.

Done quite a bit of walking in this area including staying in the camp, looks like it has been dismantled

How does one drive to Cwn Gwdi camp - I seem to recall a road out of Brecon

Intend to get up there this Summer

Yes. Leave Brecon town centre crossing the bridge over the River Usk on B4601. Take 2nd significant turning on the left (Ffrwdgrech Road), opposite the Drovers Arms. Drive under A40 bypass. Road splits into 3, take the left hand turn. Eventually you will reach the car park. You have to pay if you're not National Trust members.

All that's left of the old camp are a few half buried bases, sadly.
