A glimpse of the Lake District in 1939
« on: 14:21:33, 12/05/20 »
I'm not sure if this YouTube video counts as news or an article but this seems the most appropriate place to post.

Shot in 1939, 'Over The Hills' is a 15-minute colour film promoting the Austin 8. The car is filmed climbing various Lake District passes, totalling 25,000 feet in 234 miles and taking over 12hours for the journey.

I think it is a charming film and it was fun spotting many familiar locations.

That's great. Thanks for posting.

I wouldn't fancy crossing the tarn outflow at Watendlath and as for driving up to Rigghead Quarries  :D

I thoroughly enjoyed watching that. It was good looking for familiar places and fells. I bet a lot of modern day 4x4's (Chelsea tractors) wouldn't be able to cope with some of that terrain. Amazing how that Austin 8 just went over gravel, rocks and gullies and through water without a care in the world. They don't make them like they used to  :)

Blimey, that's a heck of a day out driving over those passes. Last time I went up, and down, Garburn Pass it was hard enough just walking and I have seen a 4x4 stuck on the Walna Scar Road. Think I'll look for an Austin 8 for mi next car  8)
