Day 1 over, now at Ennerdale Bridge. Very hot and a diversion is in place around Dent Hill, tomorrow meant to be hotter still but planning on going to Red Pike and along the ridge to Haystacks rather than the traditional route O0
-
The higher route is a fantastic option to take, just be sure to take plenty of fluids. And enjoy the steep descent down High Crag, a knee killer. O0
-
Good luck sussamb, I hope you have a great trip O0
-
Good luck on your C2C, sussamb - stay safe in the heat. O0
-
Enjoy the walk. O0
May borrow your gpx file for next year. So try not to deviate too much from the route. ;D ;D
-
Hope all goes well sussamb, I don't envy you this heat, we finished our walk just in time!
-
Enjoy the wonderful weather! Long may it last 8)

My C2C ended yesterday, took a bad tumble at Scarth Gap and had to be air lifted to hospital. Awaiting an op to repair bad gash to my face
-
So sorry to hear of your fall, that sounds absolutely dreadful :(. What can one say?. I can only wish you the very best for your upcoming op and recovery.
-
How dreadful, I trust that you will be on the mend before too long. It just shows that no matter how experienced you are things can go wrong. I could have believed it of others, including me although I do take great care walking alone although even on my recent Camino walk I tripped over my shoelaces. When I walked my C2C I had to go down from Scarth Gap to Buttermere as the wind was blowing me off my feet - "it could have been me springs to mind".
-
Really sorry to hear this news Jon, as harland said, it can happen to the most experienced of us, and I'd put you up there in that group of walkers. Such a shame, so early in your C2C crossing as well.
I remember taking a tumble not too far from there on ’High Stile’ in front of Domtheone and Rhino, I banged my head slightly, but was lucky to get away with it.
Jon, I can only wish you a speedy recovery mate and that the op goes well. Hopefully you'll have another go at the C2C sometime in the future. In the meantime, look after yourself O0
-
Sorry to hear the news. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
-
Thoughts are with you. Ironic that you got back from the emergency services what you have put into it over the years.
Hope they fix it up good for you.
-
I am sorry to hear of your accident. I hope you recover quickly and are back in the hills soon.
-
Gutted to hear this news today Jon. I can’t imagine how bad you are feeling just now.
-
So sorry to hear this, just shows it can happen to anyone, anytime. Hoping they do a good job patching you up, then good luck getting back on the trails again.
-
Not good. There must be easier ways of getting a ride in a helicopter. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
-
Very Sorry to read of your accident, best wishes for a speedy recovery.
-
Hope you make a speedy recovery......thinking of you thinking about getting back into the hills!
Kind regards............
-
Really sorry to hear that. Hope you make a quick recovery.
-
Oh no, sussamb :( Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and no lasting damage.
-
Thanks all for the thoughts. Should be no lasting damage and I'll be out on the hills again as soon as I can O0
-
Sorry to read of your misadventure sussamb. A great disappointment for you as well as the pain and discomfort of injury. Hope you've suffered no lasting damage and get well soon.
-
All the best for a speedy recovery
-
Get well soon!
-
Crikey, hope you recover soon, sorry your C2C ended too soon. :(
We were thinking about you yesterday wondering how you were coping with the heat. We were struggling with it and we were pleased we weren't doing the mileage you were. We heard a helicopter flying above us just after 2pm, we were near Lord's Seat, I wonder if that was yours.
-
Sorry to hear your bad news. Heres to a speedy recovery, all the best.
-
We heard a helicopter flying above us just after 2pm, we were near Lord's Seat, I wonder if that was yours.
Possibly, we flew from Haystacks to Preston so it could have been en route to us O0
-
Really sorry to hear this sussamb. :-[ I’m sure you’ll be back fighting fit soon and will be planning the C2C again.
-
Cockermouth MRT website 29 June "A 67-year old male walker sustained a head injury near Seat, Buttermere. Team members and NWAA helimed paramedics treated him at the scene. He was stretchered a short distance to Scarth Gap then flown to Preston Royal Hospital. " Can't be him as I'm sure he is much younger! ;D
-
That'll be me then ;D
-
Seems to be a bad place for accidents. If you Google Scarth Gap it brings up stories of numerous rescues.
-
Yes, that particular path is quite steep and very uneven, I simply wasn't taking enough care :(
Will have to do it again another time O0
-
Was it the descent that I said to take care on?
-
Sounds like you will live to fight another day Jon. Best wishes. Am guessing you came to grief on the horrible scree stuff coming down from Seat. Nearly went head first myself there in 2013. All the best
-
Was it the descent that I said to take care on?
Quite possibly, can't remember where you said.
-
Am guessing you came to grief on the horrible scree stuff coming down from Seat.
Not quite, managed that, it was on the final descent into Scarth Gap.
-
Jon, were you on your own? How did the MRT get called out? Any idea yet of how long you will be in Preston hospital?
How is the face?
-
Oh heavens what bad luck. All the very best for a speedy recovery O0
-
Sorry to hear your news and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

No I was with someone but there were lots of walkers about. Call out was via 999 and leaving hospital tomorrow as had stitches etc about 2 hours ago. Face looks worse than normal ;D
Thanks again for all the kind words, I just feel a bit of a Pratt :-[
-
Face looks worse than normal
Crumbs, it must have been bad! :D
-
Thanks again for all the kind words, I just feel a bit of a Pratt :-[
There for the grace of god go all of us on here. I consider myself lucky not to have come a cropper as yet. Accidents happen to anyone.
It must be a very serious injury for you to be in hospital for such a long time. I had spinal decompression surgery on my neck in Nov 17, where 3 vertebrae had the lamina removed to create space for my spinal cord. I was in and out in 27 hours.

The issue was more the fact that overall it wasn't too bad, and I kept being bumped down the list for the only one emergency theatre.
-

Well you're in good company here then.
Hands up all others who feel a bit of a pratt most of the time ?
Well that was unanimous O0
-
Face looks worse than normal ;D
"I have a reason to look ugly. Most people don't." Niki Lauda. ;)
-
Tough luck Sussam, I hope you soon up and about as normal. Ive had a few tumbles but fortunately up to now nothing that serious, but as you know very well, all it takes is a simple trip and depending on what you hit, depends the outcome. Gutted for you after all the planning etc, but still there for another day, take care.
-
Cheers Tony and Dave O0
-
Sorry to hear about your mishap Sussamb, I particularly dislike the upper part of that descent, Gamlin End, myself. You're now immortalized on the pages of Grough! https://www.grough.co.uk/magazine/2019/07/02/injured-lakeland-walker-airlifted-after-fall-on-buttermere-fells
-

Oh I see, shame you had to stay in so long but good news it wasn't as serious as I thought it was.
-
I've only just caught up with this thread. Hope the recovery continues OK.
I'm sure lots of us have had tumbles which could have been as bad if they happened at a different time or place.
-
Yes thanks, now recovering at home after a bit of a fight to extricate myself from Preston Hospital. Staff were excellent but the discharge system sucks ;D
-
Sussamb. Were you insured? Are you able to recoup any of your costs for accommodation etc. I ask because I never insure for holidays in this country whereas it is generally forced on you when you book walking holidays abroad.
Glad to read that you are safely home and hopefully repairing okay.
-
Yes I have annual travel insurance but not sure how much of any costs it will cover for this. Will be checking later though in case O0
-
Thanks for the newspaper article, certainly makes it real and as a person who has fallen quite a few times, I know how in a split second, it can be a hair's breadth difference from just getting back up and walking away, to a personal disaster.
Now that its happened have you had anyone yet complaining that you've wasted public money, going out on those hills alone, taking risks and so on? I'm surprised that the Mail hasn't had a pop at you! :)
-
Yes thanks, now recovering at home after a bit of a fight to extricate myself from Preston Hospital. Staff were excellent but the discharge system sucks ;D
I had to fight tooth and nail to get both of my parents out of hospital so they could pass away at home as they had requested. It descended into farce with this specialist discharge sister not allowing my father to be discharged until he had been assessed for bed rails. It took five days for the bed rails to be fitted which were then promptly removed by the district nurse as she considered them to be dangerous. It was then a two day wait until an ambulance was available and he eventually got home at 11pm at night. As you say,the staff are excellent but the discharge system is in complete meltdown and its going to take far more than a shed load of money to fix it.
-

No not yet, I'll probably be told I should have taken paper maps and it wouldn't have happened ;D
-

Yep O0

Sorry to hear about your mishap, sussamb.

Sorry to hear about your mishap, sussamb.
Hope you didn't bend your new poles!
-
Nope ;D
-
Just got a few days free so am going to stroll from Horton in Ribblesdale up to Keld and then over to St Bees. Might just walk very carefully past the crash site!
-
You'll be ok as you'll be going up at that point, it was coming down that got me O0
-
Sussamb, how is the recovery doing?
-
Good thanks, got a follow up at hospital today but swelling massively reduced and right eye now almost fully open. Real pain is having the neck brace on that limits so much, can't drive for example, but that's due to be reassessed next week O0
-
I am pleased you are on the mend a bit sussamb :)
We walked over Scarth Gap yesterday and we did think about you.
-

Is there a Blue Plaque or perhaps a discrete bronze marker there yet?

No but I'll stick one there if I ever return O0
-
Well it seems to be the season for failures Jon. I set off on Wednesday last for a stroll up the Pennine Way and then across the western half of the C2C. I haven't been too well for a while and completely unpractised but felt the need try something so set off from Stainforth and joined the PW at Horton. The first two days to Hawes were very cloudy; couldn't see a thing on Shunner Fell and nearly came a cropper on the Kisdon Hill rocky descent to Keld. Stayed a couple of nights there and had a great day walking up over to Gunnerside and back via Muker. Getting hot at this point. The walk to Kirkby was hotter and Sundays trek to Shap hotter still. Walking slower than usual and maybe not enough fluid meant I gradually got some form of heatstroke/exhaustion ( nausea, lack of appetite, dizziness).
Monday morning saw me in quite a bad way, and having packed to head over to Patterdale via Measand; I realised it simply wasn't wise; especially walking solo. The day was boiling hot and some quite hard work ahead. So it was a taxi to Penrith and a train home.
First time I have ever come off a walk before the end and I didn't have the dignity of an accident to excuse the fail. Feel a bit better now but Patterdale to Honister YHA in todays sun would have been a toughie.
It was the right decision but doesn't feel great. Got five days out in the hills I suppose. West Highland Way next month however.
Hope the recovery is progressing
John
-
Must have jinxed you ;D
Yep, recovery going very well, still have to wear a neck brace until next Friday but then hoping it'll be off and I can get out walking again O0
-
Gosh - just catching up with the news after my holiday - bad luck Sussamb - so frustrating to have to finish the walk so early, but glad you're recovering well.
-
Yes, wouldn't have minded so much if I'd nearly finished but gutting to have it happen on Day 2 :(
Next year I'm pretty booked up with all sorts of stuff, but aiming for a return trip in 2021 :)
-
Well Sussamb and JohnnyP, what are you like! :) At least you were both out there 'in action' at the time.I get to see the consultant about my hip on Tuesday, however it is not as bad as a friend of mine, who came to grief on his bike yesteray morning. In a group of cyclists, during light drizzlew, he came off. Not dramatic, apparently, and the other expected him to get up and carry on, saying that it wasn;t nothing unusual, just a routine 'Off'.However they soon realised it was more serious. Emergency services etc. He broke his hip and humerous. This afternoon he having hip replacement surgery, followed by more to stabilise his arm on another day.
-
Sorry to hear about your friend. When I look back at what happened and the photos taken of where I fell I feel my luck was in that day as my injuries could have been very much worse.
-

Is it safe to assume that if you attempt the C2C again you won’t be taking this alternative scenic route and instead head past Black Sail? :D :D
-
Oh yes ;D
-
Don't you need to exorcise the ghost? :) it was below the scree then, just before the bottom?
On a personal note, still don't feel quite right again..it was a strange experience. Oddly got bitten a lot by horse flies this time when I normally don't.. nasty big [censored] all over the place from shunner fell all the way to shap
-
it was below the scree then, just before the bottom?
Yep, on the final descent into Scarth Gap, this is where I fell ... forwards onto this lot from about the top of the pic :D

At least that is a respectable place fall.I had a similar fall in Crowden Brook :-[ on the second day of the Pennine Way.Thankfully I managed to patch myself up and carry on,albeit at a slow pace.It was rather embarassing as I had been a rock climber before taking up walking.
The terrain you fell down is quite steep.Probably best to scramble down it so you can make use of the hands and quickly correct a mistake before things get too serious.
-
Yikes! Did you do it with a full pike and double somersault or did you trade off artistic impression for degree of difficulty?
-

Well the folks in front walked down ok ... ;D
-

No, more a belly flop ;D
-
Ouch - that's nasty ground to take a tumble on.
-
Yes I picked the worst possible spot ;D
-
Return trip (not literally this time I hope!) now planned for early March O0
-
Same itinerary and stopovers?
-
Roughly although New Ing Lodge in Shap is closed in early March so I need to find somewhere else there. I'm also intending to miss out Scarth Gap ;D

Once bitten.....

Glad to hear it's back on for you Jon, hope it's not too icy over the high ground. Wish you all the very best O0
-
Cheers O0
-
Are you doing the Spine as a warm up? ;D
-
No, I've withdrawn from that, after my fall I didn't feel I had enough time to prepare :(
-
Accommodation all now booked and my route practically settled. Unlike last time I'm intending to avoid Red Pike (!) and instead of staying at Ennerdale Bridge am spending the first night at Gillerthwaite, which will leave me with only 9 miles or so on the second day. I'll climb from there up towards Scarth Gap, on the map it appears there is a path that goes around the south of Haystacks rather than me having to climb all the way to the col and then face the scramble up Haystacks. Is anyone able to confirm if the map is correct and what that route is like as an alternative to the scramble up from Scarth Gap?
-
Sussamb, do you mean the path that goes by the Black Sail Youth Hostel and then up by Loft Beck? There is a path there, I have used the path as far as The Tongue but ascended up The Tongue to get to Moses Trod. I don't know what the Loft Beck path is like but I have seen other people going up it. It looks quite steep. The path up The Tongue is more gradual although a bit longer than the Loft Beck route to get to Honister.
-
I think I've walked up that route. I came out of Black Sail, turned left and in a short while turned uphill left again, Fairly steep but no real bother, flattens out at the top and it slowly descends to the area near the slate mine.

Nope, it starts at around NY189131 to the south of Scarth Gap then goes around Haystacks to the south of it before joining the Loft Beck route after Blackbeck Tarn.

That's the Loft Beck route, but I'm hoping to try the route described in my post above in reply to April.
-
Hi sussamb, I realise now the Loft Beck route is the low level C2C route and you would know about it already ::) :-[
Looking on an older paper map I can see a trace of a path starting at the grid ref you mention but on a newer version of the map it is showing as a fence. From Haystacks summit we have walked near and alongside that fence when we have explored Haystacks summit area and there is a trod of a path. I don't know if this path starts alongside it from near Scarth Gap mind. At least I've not noticed one. There are a few paths and trods to explore across the summit away from the main path; we have been to see Wainwrights perched boulder a few times and been on some of the other little tops. In Wainwrights The Western Fells (second edition revised by Chris Jesty) he does indicate a route that goes through scree and avoids the scrambly bit but he recommends using the usual route from Scarth Gap. I do remember reading somewhere years ago there is (or was) a path avoiding the scrambly bit but I haven't looked for it because I'm not fond of scree.
I see you are starting in early March so we may have recce to see if we can find that path, I feel like having a bit of an explore up there :) Squeaky hasn't done Haystacks yet so we may go up there if there is some nice weather in the next few weeks.
-
Thanks for that, if you do manage to 'explore' would be useful to know what you find O0
-
I will take some pics too if we find a practicable route :)
I don't think we will be going this weekend mind, the wind is forecasted to be 40 - 55 mph on Haystacks on Saturday ;D
-
Slight breeze ;D

Ive used a small ascending path that leaves the forest track NY177132, a little further on than the path down and slightly back to the footbridge over the river. You have to be careful not to miss it as it goes through some overgrown bush right at its beggining. Eventually you go over a stile in a fence and continue ascending until you come across some small drumlins (good camp spot) and swing round left to the Haystacks Col.There is a stile in the fence opposite across the stream, if you look carefully, you will see it. It is however seldom used and not much of a path if any, with a scree above. I have followed a very rough intermittent path from the top of Loft beck, mostly along a fence before dropping down to that stile (in reverse), but it's very scrappy. When Ive gone the other way as first described, Ive gone up to Haystacks Col and over the summit before dropping down to Innominate and by Blackbeck tarns.
-
Yes, that's the route I was thinking of, to avoid the scramble over Haystacks and in case the wind is up.
-
Made St Bees. Seems I'm not the only one starting tomorrow, two more in the b&b apparently O0
-
Gan Canny Sussamb, we are in the Cheviots this weekend but we will be thinking of you

Good luck with your walk. Keep us posted whenever possible. :)
-
Say hi to Kirkby Stephen for me as you go by. Look out for the parrots!
-
Now having pint at yha Rosthwaite. Conditions pretty awful on top with low cloud, gusting winds and areas of snow. Route finding tricky :)
That's further than last time though as Day 2 now over O0

Yep, Rosthwaite to Patterdale in one day, now in Shap at end of Day 4, third down already ;)
-
That is good going sussamb O0
It looks a tad blowy and wet tomorrow in Shap, I hope it isn't too awful for you O0
-
Latest forecast seems to suggest it'll be more overnight and clear by time I start but we'll see. I've got good waterproofs so not really fussed by rain O0

Almost back in the land of wifi so here's a pic of the conditions above Loft Beck on Saturday, sorry it's sideways on ;D

Bet you are glad that you are going West to East at this time of year!
-
No more so than today :)
Gusty and strong winds plus rain pretty much all day. Thankfully at my back most of the time O0
Nice moorland walk to Kirkby although quite boggy in places with some farmers fields just a muddy quagmire, glad I had my sticks, in some fields if I'd taken skis I could have skied on the mud ;D
Lovely day though O0

There are, or were, 2 outdoor shops in Kirkby Stephen for resupply. For everything else there is a shop called Mic Macs - if they don't sell it, it probably doesn't exist.

You have chosen the right direction to walk the C2C :)
The strong wind might be making you go faster ;)

Very strong wind today over Nine Standards, and most of the time in my face or trying to knock me sideways, took me as long to do the 12 miles today as the 19 yesterday. Constant rain too, looking better for tomorrow thankfully O0
-
You have had challenging weather to deal with. Thanks for the updates sussamb O0
You deserve some better weather for the rest of the walk.

You are getting into the area where Black Sheep becomes palatable.
-
Had quite a few of those O0

Had quite a few of those O0
Roast or boiled? ;)
-
Grilled ;D
On a roll though, another dry day. Two long days coming up so hoping it stays that way O0
-
Certainly am, and a completely dry 'day" O0
What - no beer ? :o
-
;D knew someone would say that ::)
-
Good to hear it's going well. O0
-
;D knew someone would say that ::)
I took the bait....
-
Our local had it on tap - (it was dead up a mile for me and the dog) - the landlord was a director of Black Sheep Brewery... it was always a good pint. If it wasn't quite up to usual par he'd let you know. Sadly it's a restaurant these days... and not a particularly good one.
Some good pints on the c2c but sadly no good cider... that's in my garage lol
-
According to forecast we are in for a better week next week with temps hiting 20C.
Sussam, I only said that to cheer you up ;) . No, don't know where I got that from, however it's proved slightly wrong ::) .Going well anyway. Where are you now Ing X yet?
-
Yep ;) , at the Bluebell Inn, Lion Inn tomorrow. Not fussed about the temp, it's warm enough and more importantly dry O0
-
I love that you've completely discarded place names sussamb and are now just staggering from one hostelry to the next.
Hope you are taking lots of pics to share when you get home.

But quite a few of us probably know where he’s talking about ;)
-
Going well sussamb O0 Are there many other walkers around?
-

Absolutely, it just amused me.
-

Going very well but hardly anyone else about O0
-

Well I was replying to Slogger and knew he'd know where I meant ;D , but yes, now just pubs for the rest of the walk O0
-
Having a quiet night and discovered your post.
Fantastic to see you have recovered from your earlier 'trip', hope everything is back to normal.
Know little about C2C, apart from friends who've cycled it and crossing over route at Keld.
Wondering if you have time to put your route details on here, no need to use pub names I'm no longer able to participate! Very sad, I know!
-
Yep, pretty much back to normal thanks though I seem to be more cautious going downhill ;D
Not sure what you mean about route details, basically the standard coast to coast route.
-
Good to hear you're OK..... Must have got on the wrong track with your C2C walk, we've all done that!
Hope all the right bits are still moving in the right order!
-
Today's 19 miles over, 2 days left then it'll be back to the real world and shopping for loo roll ;D
-
Too late - there's none left!
Enjoy your last two days. :)
-
Make the most of the last couple of days sussamb, the real world is becoming less fun by the minute.
-
Yes Susamb when you finish do yourself a favour and head back to St Bees
-

Keep up to speed. Its salad cream, dog meat and breakfast cereal in my local Tesco.I presume the salad cream and dog meat is to go with the dry pasta.

Now that's an idea :)

That's ok then, don't need any of that ;D

Youll be lucky... in two days time there'll not even be any kitchen roll left for you to saw in half! ::) May have to resort to newspaper, though I bet you can still get Izal...
-
I bet you can still get Izal...
Kitchen foil would be better than Izal!
-
Kitchen foil would be better than Izal!
I liked Izal - and Bronco. Really economical, you could write on both sides, scratch your bum with it and if it was in short supply, you could wash it and reuse it. Also very handy as tracing paper for school projects as I recall. It made men of us - even the women!
-
Thought I'd clicked on the wrong thread then ;D
Safely at Glaisdale, one to do. Been nursing a strained ankle for the last 3 days but it should hold out for another day, just have to be careful I place my right foot flat or on slope away from me O0
-
So you had better not run down the hill in RHB.

We have to pass the time somehow between bulletins. I won't even begin to tell you how you only ever needed one sheet at a time. Glad you are nearly there. There has to come a point where there is no uphill left.
-
So you had better not run down the hill in RHB.
No chance of that ;D
-
There has to come a point where there is no uphill left.
Looking forward to it now O0
-
That went by quick :o
Enjoy your last day sussamb O0
-
Cheers O0

Yes,that big climb out of Grosmont is very enjoyable.
-
Yes, looking forward to that one ;D
-
Enjoy the last day, though you probably won't be able to get a pint to celebrate with at the end.
-
Hadn't thought of that :( , hopefully somewhere might be open
-
That's it, all over, and I got my pint, RHB seems to be operating as normal with many enjoying a pint or two O0
-
Well done sussamb O0
You may want to consider walking back now and forgetting everything else that’s going on!
-
Congratulations, and good to hear you got your well deserved pint.
-
Well done. Apparently its a new tradition to go for a swim in the sea after completing the walk. ;)
-
Well done. Too much hospitality at the RHB could lead to a poorly bonce, and no help will be available from the helichopper rescue folks. Good to read that you got your walk finished.
What now down to Filey and the Yorkshire Wolds on your way home?
-
Well Done. Now you have to stay there or walk home. HMG advises against using public transport.
-
My train tickets are booked so I'll risk it, should have plenty of space around me ;D
-
Well done, you can’t keep a good’un down.
-

Congratulations sussamb O0
Now back to reality....
-
Well done sussamb :)
-
Congratulations sussamb and I am pleased you got your pint, well deserved O0
-
Thanks all O0
-
Well done. Glad it was without incident this time.
-
O0
-
Looking forward to the write up. Could you make it really long please as we haven’t got anything else to do? ;D
-
Well done. Glad it was without incident this time.
O0
-
Well done and glad you got your pint before the pubs all shut up shop. Lots of other have cancelled their crossings, other trails as well, so your timing was bang on. Don't know if youve heard but the Summer Spine Races are cancelled along with many other ultra's etc.
-
Yeah I'd heard, shame but I guess had to be done.
-
Izal!
Izal has left a great impression on so many!

Wasn't there a brand called 'Bronco'

Bronco - (spanish) harsh, rough, coarse, rugged, hoarse, gravelly, wild (horse), fierce.
What a weird name to give toilet paper
