Title: Ouch
Post by: Dazza on 23:17:08, 04/08/07
Injured party. Kinder, well the Ladder, obviously had a lasting effect.

Well if things continue my walking bud will be seeing a doctor. It looks like he may have iliotibial band syndrome. Has anyone any experience of this?

There do seem to be many practical things to do about it. So it's not all bad news.

We went for a short jaunt in Dovedale (western side, roughly 5 miles) as it offers plenty of escapes. He needed it first of all but the paths didn't allow me to give any help or support (too narrow and steep), 30 minutes later I was glad to be getting down as well.

So, any experience of this on the board?

Had knee probs for years, but not this particular flavour.  I googled it and there seem to be some great resources on the net.  If his pain starts so soon after commencing walking and he's not a habitual runner it's probably worth going to the docs or even A&E to rule out a non soft tissue injury.  Hope he's OK.

He did used to run regularly which is why this seems to fit.

As I crash over when we've been walking - well you need a pint or three and a good laugh for medicinal purposes. Today his said his knee wasn't bad.

The symptoms are similar, but not indentical (as is always the case), but if it persist he's said he'll go and see the doc.

Myself I've decided I need to get fit, the western side of Dovedale is more taxing than the east but I was stunned at how unfit I was. I've been stopped smoking now for 8 weeks so didn't quite expect to feel as bad as I did!

Might be useful to visit a sports injury specialist?   It costs a bit but often the local GP will tell you to take a few painkillers and rest for a week, whereas the sports injury people better understand the causes and treatments.

Good luck giving up smoking.    I did it about 10 years ago, and for the first month was in physical pain for several days after walking, but it did go away.

May suggest that if the GP isn't overly helpful.

So far the not smoking is going ok. The main problems fitness wise has been due to weather and everything we haven't gone out as much as we'd like.

That said it walking doesn't do too much for your upper body, which is my main problem, but my brother used to be into home gyms and that so will ask what's he's got.
