I believe they are Brown Tail Moth caterpillars and, yes, they (or, rather, their hairs) are quite an aggressive irritant.

We get thousands of them on Spurn Point (also coastal).

Where abouts did you go in Pembrokeshire ?
Only a hill but all of life to me, up there between the sunset and the sea.

We were finishing the Pembrokeshire coast path from Strumble Head to St Dogmaels. The butterflies were on a connecting path leading out to the coast from Moylgrove. Made a nice change to have butterflies stationary for a while not flitting about!

Nice part of the World and pretty much over-looked. We went further round into Cardigan Bay last year and walked some of the coastal path in the area south of Aberaeron.
Would love to have more time and walk more of the pathways.

My 8 year old grandson recently made a birdbox.  It has been put to good use.
