Title: Photo hosting sites (again....sorry)
Post by: Warbler on 13:10:04, 30/04/19

There was a recent thread about which are the more favoured photo hosting sites, but I can't seem to find it.

I'm not that techy minded when it comes to photography so I need a "hosting for dummies" type site...….and free of course!

Any suggestions please.

http://flickr.com is ideal if you're hosting lots of photos though a little harder to use.

http://tinypic.com is what I use for everything not on Flickr and it's easier.

http://imgbb.com also works.

Resizing to 640x480 is best as it works on phones too where as bigger than that distorts.

Edit: I thought you meant to post on the forum not to host your own collection. Flickr is good.

Thanks Rob.

Just registered with tinypic. I'll see how that works.

Trying again to see if I can post from FB as I used to be able to do.
Seemingly not >:(

Jac that link is wrong I'm logged into Facebook and can't see it. Maybe it's not public?

I think you might be able to post Facebook photos to the forum but they may only show up for people logged into Facebook. You'll have to log out and test it.

Aha! that may be the answer. for ages I didn't realise that when posting phots on fb you could make them private/friends/public etc so probably they all went on as public. I'll change this one (it was private as just being for this test).
Should now be public

I use tinypic for posting to the forum.  Free, no need to log in. You can resize easily from the front page even before you download then copy the bulletin board/forum link straight into your post.

I already spend too much time on photos, editing then choosing and loading them onto fb. and was hoping to avoid adding extra steps. It used to work fine; I think it went pear shaped when I changed to windows10.

Changing to Windows 10 wouldn't cause this problem, the URL is wrong, Facebook privacy options prevent it or possibly something I didn't think of but it's not your end so not Windows 10.

Edit: I'm not sure you could directly use a Facebook photo like that as an image either since it's not the actual image URL it's a Facebook page.

Hi Jac

When I used Facebook all my images were set to private / friends only yet I could still copy them to here.

I'm not sure what you're doing but this is what I did .... In FB click on the image I wanted to share to here then right click within the image and select "copy image address"; back on the forum I'd then select "post reply" and then click on the little Insert Image button (top left under the "B" button) and paste the gobbledegook into there.  Click OK and voila... image appears in the post reply box.

Way back in the day, you could just copy/paste the image without all that palava but something either on the forum or FB changed and you have to fanny around inserting image now.

apparently yes it does.... but just in case that's a fluke because it's a public post, here's one that's definitely locked / private...

Now one of those contraptions didn't stop a one eyed, 3 legged welsh mutt having a good bite at my buttock, perhaps dogs are more ingenious than their salivating human counterpart.
Somewhere there is a description of this particular canine encounter in the dusty basement of this forum, together with other members encounters, never thought I would see it as a fashion accessory.

When left clicking on the pic on fb I don't get 'copy image address' just 'copy'. When clicking on the little camera insert image above I no longer get img img between which I used to insert the address I now get a box with 'walkingforum.co.uk needs some information from you insert image location' in box. I so do and it then all goes to hell in a handcart.
Something has changed 'cos it did used to work perfectly well.

Thank you all for trying - I'll just have to sign up for a hosting site.

I thought the direct Facebook CDN links like Mel used changed which is why I didn't recommend that but I Googled it and it appears they don't so what Mel said should work for you. I don't know what browser you are using so don't know why you have no copy image URL. What browser are you using?

Bing isn't a web browser it's a search engine. Your Web browser is the app you open to surf the Internet. It's probably called Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Safari if you're on a Mac. Know which one now?

If I've understood what you're doing correctly, you're left clicking on the image you want but then you need to RIGHT click within the image to get the option to "copy image address" which you should select.  It doesn't bring anything up but somehow behind the scenes magically copies the coding you need which you then paste into the forum's "insert image" pop up box (you don't need all the img coding either side of it).

Sorry Rob. Didn't scroll back far enough to see your reply; it's Edge. Which may be interesting as before my laptop took a holiday and was coaxed back to life, being changed from XP to 10 at the same time, it must also have been changed from Explorer to Edge. I just hadn't noticed.

Here we go - fingers crossed - from tinypics, resized as rob recommended (but god how I hated all the flashing adverts while doing it)

Well - can anyone see it - cos I [censored]***** can't. Just the little black box with the cross of death it.
No, even that has disappeared - just ''

Jac…..I've also had recent struggles posting photo's on here, although not through FB.

First I registered with tinypic, but like yourself, hated all the clutter that came with it. So, I binned tinypic and registered with imgbb. It took me a while to work it out but got there in the end. And no clutter.

If you go with imgbb, this thread may help.....

PS.. I'm also using "Edge"

Hope you get sorted Jac.  I bet it's something really simple.  Have a play around with the resizing ... I don't recall ever resizing anything when I used photobucket so it might be that you don't need to do that.

Our computers at work use Edge but I'd get shot for going on FB on my work's computer so I can't explore that avenue for you  :(

Jac…..I don’t feel you’ve highjacked my thread. Your posting pics issue is totally relevant to the topic.

If you've gone down the imgbb route, here’s how I did it:

Logged into imgbb.
Click on “Upload”
Click on “browse from your computer”
Select file from your folder and click “open”
Click on the image preview and change the resize box to 640 x 480 and add any other info if you wish, then click “submit”.
Click upload (takes 30 seconds or so to upload).
Next, hover over the uploaded image thumbnail and click “Embed codes”. In the box that pops up, from the dropdown menu, select “BBCode full”
Then copy and paste the code into your forum post. I didn’t use the “insert image” icon, I simply pasted it into my post.
Click on the forum preview button, and your image should be there. It worked for me anyway.
Good luck!  :)

Glad you got sorted Jac.

Mel, if people don't resize their photos they don't display correctly on Android. Don't know about iPhone. They also take more data which is again more of an issue for people on mobiles than broadband. I think I remember reading guidance on the forum intro texts when I signed up saying resize the photos too, although I can't promise I didn't inadvertently make that up!

According to this (https://www.jigsawexplorer.com/how-to-get-a-facebook-photo-url/) site the Facebook image URLs do expire after a few weeks like I thought. Is it right? Don't know, let's come back here in 5 weeks time and find out.

I don't get an option to resize my pics, either through FB or my blog (which I now use).  If I use my phone in landscape mode then any pic displays correctly, whoever posted it and however it was uploaded  O0

As for FB image URLs expiring after a certain length of time... yes they do.  Look back through trip reports from, say, a year ago... many images are simply not there anymore.  I do also wonder if the forum auto removes certain sized images after a certain length of time to preserve bandwidth(?) or something  :-\

FB automatically resizes pictures unless you turn on upload in HD then I don't know what happens then as I've never turned it on. Don't know about your blog.

Edit: I hate landscape mode but nice tip.
Edit 2: I just went through your posts, your blog images are the size I recommended people resize to so I believe your blog also automatically resizes image.

I do also wonder if the forum auto removes certain sized images after a certain length of time to preserve bandwidth(?) or something  :-\

Offsite images don't use any of the forums bandwidth which is presumably why we have to use hosting sites rather than upload directly so I wouldn't expect it removes them.

To be honest, I don't really care that much so long as I can see some pics with a trip report at the time I read it.  If they're a bit wonky when I look at them on my phone then so be it  :)

It's OK for you you've got a computer to look at them on, I've only got my phone to view with. Your blog automatically resizes BTW as I looked at your blog images linked to on here and they're the right size (640x480). I care and I wish people would upload them in the correct size for viewing on all platforms. Mostly they do but occasionally there's a wonky TR.

I would have thought that most photos on here would be of landscapes, so landscape mode would seem to be appropriate.  :)
