TR - 2nd October Base Brown to Kirk Fell
« on: 19:20:52, 07/10/16 »
I have been really busy with work over the summer so have not had the time to post many TR's but the weather last Sunday was so nice I thought I'd share our pics with you
Kirk Fell and Base Brown are two of the twenty odd fells Sooz214 and I have left in our 3rd and 2nd joint Wainwright round so we planned a bit of a convoluted route to bag them both.
Looking to Base Brown.
The weather was just about perfect with warm Autumn sunshine and light winds. We joined the end of a long line of cars parked on the lane to Seathwaite and headed for the farm. Our route up to Base Brown was up the path by Sourmilk Gill, which can be seen rushing down the fell.
Seathwaite farm. Turn right through the opening with the metal gate.
The lower falls in Sourmilk Gill..
View back down to the valley
The upper falls
Originally we were going to climb Base Brown by way of the path by the hanging stone but Sue has been having an issue with her balance and vertigo on paths with steep drops to the side and she didn't like the look of the route past the stone so we went the long way round up through the hanging valley of Gillercomb
Out of Gillercomb now and heading for Base Brown.
Looking southward from Base Brown to Great End and Esk Pike.
Great Gable peeps out above Green Gable.
Business as usual on Scafell Pike.
The view back over Gillercomb to Skiddaw and Blencathra
Looking down to Haystacks and Blackbeck Tarn then Rannerdale Knotts and Buttermere, Mellbreak and Crummock Water then Low Fell, Darling Fell and Fellbarrow
Great Gable from Green Gable.
Sue making her way down to Windy Gap.
We parted company here for a while, I took the path under Gable Crags whilst Sue went down Stone cove. This is looking to Ennerdale from the path which reminded me very much of the climbers traverse on Bowfell.
looking up one of the gulls in Gable Crag.
Brilliant rock scenery above the path.
Beck Head with Kirk Fell above from where the Gable Traverse joins the path down from Great Gable
Wasdale Head and Wastwater from Beck Head.
Super view past Fleetwith Pike and Robinson to the Crag Fell/ Grasmoor group of fells
Great Gable from Rib End.
Grasmoor on the right then the Buttermere valley then the High Stile ridge then the Ennerdale valley then Pillar, Black Crag, Scoat Fell and Steeple just peeping up at the back.
Scafell is covered in cloud but the pike is just about clear.
Looking over to Wastwater with the Whin Rigg/Illgill Head above. The weather coming in from the coast did seem to be darkening.
Black Sail hut is still basking in sunshine though.
The Langdale Pikes with Ingleborough beyond.
Rather than climb back up the rocks and scree of the Stone Cove/Wind Gap paths we took the slightly longer but easier path around to the head of Gillercomb.
The sun picks out the ridges on Blencathra
Walking back down through Gillercomb.
A lot less cars on the road than this morning.
Nearly back to Seathwaite farm
Our route was- Seathwaite - Gillercomb - Base Brown - Green Gable - Gable Traverse - Beck Head - Kirk Fell - Beck Head - Moses Trod - Gillercomb - Seathwaite(about 8.5 miles 3200ft ascent )

Great TR and photos. Looks like you had a great day. And I enjoyed following your route on the map adding my recollection of those places.

I've only been up (and down) Kirk Fell from the Black Sail Pass direction - how does Beck End compare? And the Gable Traverse - is it v tricky?

I haven't walked enough in the fells recently and your TR makes me want to get out there...

Cheers everybody for your kind comments O0
@Sarah. The path from Beck Head hasn't got the exposure or scrambles like  the climb from Black Sail Pass ( which is why we did it  :)  )
IMHO the Gable traverse wasn't tricky at all, There are a few rocky section right at the start but after the that it's pretty well defined and if you have ever done the climbers traverse on Bowfell I'd say It's similar but without the exposure to the very steep drops into Mickleden. O0

Excellent TR and photos. I particularly love the one of Blencathra with the sunlight delineating the ridges in sharp relief.  O0

I think I'll have to try to get that one of the upper Sourmilk Gill falls for myself too.

Thank you Hedgetrimmer O0
We enjoyed the path ascending the falls more in the morning rather than descending in the evening....very hard on the knees :(
