I would always carry a map and compass when walking in a group and periodically try to make sure I knew where we were.

There are bits of this story missing as it just doesn't add up.
He was out walking with a group but had a tent with him?
He was experienced but in 3 days had traveled 10 miles?
His family raised the alarm not the group he was with?
He didn't think people would be looking for him when he had been missing for 3 days?

The bit of it i wasnt so keen on was that he saw the search teams looking for him. . . . . but they didnt see him.
Note to self, take whistle torch and bright piece of something to wave about when out in the sticks next time.
one step then another then another then a bench - please?
