A couple of weekends ago - 20 Jan - I headed up to the lakes for the day. My intention was to climb the Mells and Gowbarrow as the forecast was for low cloud all morning and I still need to tick these three little ones off, so it seemed an ideal day to do so. However, driving down the A5091 towards Matterdale End is was clear that parking was going to be a challenge due to the amount of snow. I struggled to find a space from which I thought I could get out unaided and, indeed had to stop to help a father and son who had parked up and wild camped and couldn't move the car in the morning.
So - change of plan and parked up on the outskirts of Keswick - Briar Rigg and walked up behind Latrigg and onwards on the Cumbria Way path towards Skiddaw House;
Looking back over a greay Derwent Water
The snowy path on the rocky section
Skiddaw House comes into view -strangely I passed two young guys in full 18th Century outfits who were on a murder mystery weekend at the hostel - very odd sight!
Great Calva appearing from the gloom
View towards Skiddaw range as the blue sky starts to peep through
Looking down the valley between Great Calva and Mungrisdale Common
Due to time and light I had to make this an out and back walk.
Clouds making everything look dramatic on the return trip
Only to disappear as I made my way back to Latrigg and down to the car - looking back to Skiddaw Little Man bathed in sunshine
Lovely day - not what I planned but a cracking winter walk 10.5 miles and a bit of gentle climbing.
