Title: Black Fell and Holme Fell
Post by: jontea on 22:26:52, 12/03/19

Yes this was a wet one in January. I'd missed the snow, but I was heading to the Lakes anyway, no matter what the weather had in store.

Looks a character building day Jontea.  I had a problem last year getting from Holme Fell back to the car park at Glen Mary - we took a more direct line from the summit of Holme Fell and ended up backtracking, sidetracking and cussing a lot,  though we did find the path in the end. It's a shame you didn't have better weather, the views are lovely from both those fells.

Looks like a bit of a tough couple of fells John - looks like a day for gaiters if ever there was one.

The path which would takes you southeast, down through ’Harry Guards Wood’ is easily missed near the summit.  It's a pity that you missed it because it takes you down along a gully which follows a beck and the walk back to the car would have been quite a bit shorter.  You also have the option to walk along the west side of the Yew Tree Tarn by the A593 which does take you through the most hideously boggy field with very bolshi cows!!!... or you can join the path by the A593 and the tarn :)

Great TR, enjoyed reading that.

Cheers
Lee

Was it a bit damp!

I guess a lot of us have done those fells in not great weather as otherwise we would go somewhere higher.

I did some of this walk a few weeks ago, and added Lingmoor Fell (as you do) on a lovely sunny day, no rain or bogginess for me  :D :D :D

I did it in the opposite direction from yourself, doing Black Fell first and up through "Harry Guards Wood" until I was just under the summit of Holme Fell, I just walked under it for a little while then double backed a bit to the summit but I can see why it would be harder to find in the opposite direction.

Tarn Hawse is indeed a nice place and popular to sit on a warm day and very scenic.

A great trip report as usual, Jontea - really enjoyed reading that... Sounds like an "interesting" day in the hills but at least you achieved several of your targets. O0   :)

You sure can pick 'em!. Not even a bit of remaining snow to cheer it up. A grand set of photos in weather like that.
