Bl...y Hip.
« on: 21:54:16, 24/07/19 »
Following my scan of my hip that showed a Paralabral Cyst which is an indicator of a Labrum Tear, I got to see the consultant yesterday. He completely ignored the scan results and following some questions declared that my symptoms are not that of a Labrum Tear. He instead referred to the x-ray which he said indicated medium Arthritis, although the radiologists report of my scan stated that my hip was normal  apart from the Cyst. The scan images show no Arthritis. I got the feeling that the consultant didn't appreciatte me getting the private scan done before I had seen him, he just didn't want to know about it. Anyway the upshot is that he told me the way to find out is by way of an Arthroscopic examination, where they go in with a camera and have a look around. Ive had  Athroscopic surgery carried out on both knees many years ago.The punchline is that there is no longer any funding for this procedure on the NHS and the only way is to private at 7,000 pnds plus.I said "so if someone can't afford to go private, they just have to suffer?" He just shrugged his shoulders and repeated "there's no funding."  Back on the Naproxen!

Slogger, my wife is a nurse, originally from Hungary. She introduced me to the health system in Budapest where you can book in to see a specialist at quite short notice, and get a diagnosis immediately, with suggestions as to how to proceed and the cost. The prices are a fraction of what you pay privately over here and the consultants are world class specialists.
I got a second opinion on a problem I had, my local health centre would not allow it, it cost me £60 for the full investigation. We had already googled the bloke and he really was an expert in his field.
My wife had a couple of suspect skin blemishes checked out too, similar results in that what would have taken ages for the NHS to investigate took two hours and £50.
I'm not suggesting that you do this, just that there may be alternatives you could explore overseas. As with anything you would need to do your homework re flights, accommodation etc.

Sounds very frustrating Slogger - hope you get it sorted.  I hadn't heard of the withdrawal of funding for arthroscopies, I had one done on my right knee several yaers ago after a rugby injury failed to clear up, and it was miraculous - he did  clean up of my knee and within 24 hours I could straighten my leg fully which I hadn't done for three months.  All for a fraction of the cost of full blown knee surgery, according to my consultant.

Tell them you can't tolerate naproxen anymore and not being able to do the things you have enjoyed for the last fifty years is causing you depression that is  leaving you feeling suicidal.Might be just enough to persuade them to do the operation. Here again,if sectioning you under the mental health act is cheaper they might go for the latter so be careful. ;)

I suspect the funding issue may be an area thing. I had a lympoma removed from my thigh. Initially I was informed that in the area that I lived they don't remove lumps anymore, but if I had lived in the area next to ours they still do!It was however removed as it was an Atypical cyst. The annoying thing is that the reason I had the scan was to find out if I did have arthritis. The scan said "No" the consultant reffering to the x-ray said "Yes" ,he also said that I had been diagnosed with the same medium arthritis 10 years ago and that nothing had changed. That diagnosis turned out to be a bad groin strain as I had suspected, and after I changed a working practice, the problem resolved itself. So now it's, do I have arthritis or not, I am tempted, no, I am 'going to' rely, on the scan and take it that there is no arthritis. This is the radiologists report, word for word:-Findings: There is a 1.5cm paralabral cyst at the 4 O'clock position, likely to be associated with a labral tear.
This can be discerned running posteromedially from the hip joint. The right femoral head shows minor osteophylic lipping.
Both hips appear otherwise normal with no evidence of femoroacetabular impingement.
Impression: Right hip labral tear at 4 O'clock position with 1.5cm paralabral cyst.Recommendation: Abnormal, refer to relevant clinician. The mind boggles!
Going to try something long and fast soon as another test
