Title: Union Rock, Knocknashee, Dunmoran Strand in Co Mayo, ROI trip
Post by: henryb on 18:18:28, 29/09/20
My latest week-end trip saw me venture to north Mayo last Friday. I decided upon three short walks last Sunday to put the day in. My first walk saw me take in Knocknashee. I got the idea from a Sligo walks booklet; this short walk was included in the top six walking highlights in the region. I parked in a small lay by on the road and walked up the track and stairs to the hill. Don't venture to the summit, instead walk around the hill for the best views. The views were breath taking and I was down within one hour; it was the best walk I've ever done in that time. Thereafter I travelled to Union wood following a red way-marked trail to Union Rock which offered views as amazing as Knocknashee. The walk was 5.5km. I finished up with a coastal walk on Dunmoran strand before driving back to the hotel in Ballina. I also stopped on Friday afternoon for a photo stop of Benbulben from the roadside - one of the best views I've ever saw.

Lovely.

Sometimes it is best to pack a number of small walks into a day - this was obviously one of those days!

Thanks Richard, Sligo is the perfect location for a day of that nature with many short walks in the region :)

Thanks Mel, Sligo is great for variety; there are hill walks/mountain walks/coastal walks/ forest walks/river walks. It really does have something for all tastes :)
