Alps advice
« on: 18:13:21, 10/01/11 »
In early stages of planning a possible trip to the Alps with a friend. We are thinking that getting the train would be the best idea. Would only be there for a week at most so not long enough to warrant two days driving there and back. Can't be bothered with the hassle of flying. Probably going in September, you can only get prices for tickets up to 90 days in advance so cannot find out cost yet. Tried a sample fare 90 days in advance the other day came up with #140.00 return. We are thinking of being based in Chamonix. Any advice on transport, accomodation walks gratefully accepted.

I remember coming upon a company called alpineelements.co.uk - they have their own hotels in Chamonix and nearby Les Gets. No idea if they are any good. They seem to offer just accommodation or packages.

I should add that you must go early in September otherwise the lifts, navettes, Montenvers railway will be closed, and they are essential to get the best out of Chamonix walking. It is in a typical glacial valley, U shaped, very steep initial slope so you need mechanical help to get up on to the more open upper slopes, or spend all morning slogging up a path. Most amenities close down in the middle of the month to prepare for the ski season.
