Author Topic: What is the easiest and hardest of the 3 Yorkshire peaks?  (Read 2367 times)

i have been wanting to walk the 3 Yorkshire peaks for a while now so I’m thinking I’m going to go and do one and see how long it takes me so which is the easiest to hardest and why. If you want to read why I’m wanting to do them and what I’ve done to train towards them carry on reading.


I attend a brain injury group the man who set it up has done many challenges including this one a few times. He made the mistake of saying I wouldn’t manage this challenge which just made me want to prove him wrong. Last year he planned 2 hill walks intending to work up to the 3 Yorkshire peaks. We did a 5 mile in Brantingham and 10 mile in hope valley both hill walk. The 5 mile for me was easy not too steep hills and had a few stops as a few did struggle 2 actually couldn’t manage it with one feeling dizzy and panicking as she later said she had an out of body experience.


Next was 10 mile which less people went on everyone completed. This was much harder than the 5 mile one not cos of being longer either. The first 4 mile were constant steep up hill walk. I had expected it to be like the 5 mile twice I couldn’t have been more wrong. I’d been up early my balance isn’t great on uneven ground so even worse with being up early I didn’t know eating could stop you feeling dizzy when exercising so as I wasn’t hungry I didn’t eat. Even after the first mile I had found it much harder than the 5 mile walk. The man who organised the walk asked if anyone needed to stop or go back as we were going in a circle so halfway we wouldn’t have been able to go back. There was no chance I was even thinking of going back even tho I was finding it hard. After the second mile still uphill I started feeling dizzy so had to sit down. The man who organised the walk asked if I wanted to go back then got me to eat a chocolate bar as he knew I would just push myself more to do the walk if he tried getting me to go back. Honestly I couldn’t have been more determined to finish it if he had tried to get me to go back. Luckily after eating I did feel better so we caught up with the others and had dinner. I did manage rest of walk much better.


After that the man understandably decided no more longer walks, but said he would do another 10 mile one this year. Unfortunately with new staff they decided against doing another 10 mile as the woman who plans outings wants things that more people want to do.so it was only this week we did a short walk round Brantingham which was split into two groups so more wanted to do it. It was going to be a 3 mile walk and a shorter walk. Everyone chose which group to go in a few who had struggled on the walk in same area last year went in the shorter walk group. The man did longer walk group and woman did short walk group. It was almost all men did longer walk and all women did short walk I was only woman in long walk and there was one man in shorter walk. We did 4and half mile and short walk did nearly 3 mile so both were longer than planned and everyone enjoyed it. They said they will do another walk like that and the man said next time we will do at least 6 mile. This is why I’m not giving in on 3 Yorkshire peaks cos I know if he thought I would manage them he would be all for me doing them and I know I can train up to doing the 3 peaks safely and I know if I did complete them the man would want to see me finish and he’d be as happy as me but he’s worried I will push myself too much.

Before you set off on one of the 3 peaks, can you navigate or do you have someone going with you who can?  The question of which one is the easiest is not quite the right question.  With the possible exception of Whernside, the 3 peaks route does not follow the easiest route up and down each peak as it is a point to point route.
If you have any balance issues, I would be hesitant about you tackling the route without an escort.  There are some very steep ups and more importantly downs.

Having climbed all three several times, I would say the easiest is Pen y Ghent, providing you go up it the right way and come back the same way. Take the route out of Horton in Ribblesdale via Brant Gill Head and Hunt Pot. Much of this is easy track and/or well "manicured" with paving and there is no climbing/scrambling.


However, don't run away with the idea that this is representative of all the routes up all the peaks!

Its repeated almost every three months.If you are suffering from brain injury the internet isn't the place to go for advice.Listen to "the man" as he is probably talking from experience.

 All I would say to the OP is don't put your ego before your health.

From your previous posts  and this one it is clearly something you really want to achieve.  It also sounds like you are gently moving forward toward achieving it.  Keep going many of the best things in life are those that take time to achieve.

Odd one this.  The OP pops up, asks a question, often on or around a 3 peaks theme, and then does not return to read the answers.  OP has not been active on the forum since the date/time of the first post.
