Title: Where to get wind speed for the Lake District fells (observed)?
Post by: Rob Goes Walking on 20:17:24, 05/04/19
Where is the best place to get wind speed for the fells? I'm trying to work out the wind speed on Lord's Seat and Barf today because I wouldn't like it much windier.

There is a weather station on the top of Great Dun Fell - it's not the lakes but what the hell - it's close and high

Less than 47 mph... I'm surprised it's not higher a couple of times gusts nearly moved me and taking pictures was tricky. Maybe WOW is constant wind speed not gust? I can believe that. Just googled the less visual more numbers Great Dun Fell Met Office observations (here (https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/observations/gcwr04zvq)) at noon about when I was on top of Lord's Seat it was 45mph speed and 56 gust. Probably quite similar.

I'm going to check the wind forecast before I go out next time...

Nobbut a light breeze for Great Dun - gusts of over 100mph are not that unusual in really bad weather or when the helm wind is blowing

Now I'm thinking it wasn't as fast  ;D I wish I knew how to get the speed then I'd know my limit. Maybe there's a small device you can carry to measure it? I'm going to carry a thermometer out of curiosity, everyone was in insulated jackets and I was wandering around in a t-shirt. The wind felt almost warming. Left my fleece in.the bag. So long as it's not wet I'm pretty tolerant of cold. Being fat probably helps but not so much with the wind!

You need a hand held anemometer, see amazon or https://www.weathershop.co.uk/shop/hand-held (https://www.weathershop.co.uk/shop/hand-held)
Can be got for under £30 or less https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anemometer-Measurement-Thermometer-Helicopter-Windsurfing/dp/B01LZXM0LP/ref=pd_day0_hl_0_1/261-6371843-6373318?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01LZXM0LP&pd_rd_r=d3252e8b-57e4-11e9-9399-9fa14e2ff469&pd_rd_w=skF9F&pd_rd_wg=GHaTb&pf_rd_p=92d624bb-a334-423e-8722-8024dd09667f&pf_rd_r=XCHB27JPF419Q9E906QH&psc=1&refRID=XCHB27JPF419Q9E906QH (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anemometer-Measurement-Thermometer-Helicopter-Windsurfing/dp/B01LZXM0LP/ref=pd_day0_hl_0_1/261-6371843-6373318?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01LZXM0LP&pd_rd_r=d3252e8b-57e4-11e9-9399-9fa14e2ff469&pd_rd_w=skF9F&pd_rd_wg=GHaTb&pf_rd_p=92d624bb-a334-423e-8722-8024dd09667f&pf_rd_r=XCHB27JPF419Q9E906QH&psc=1&refRID=XCHB27JPF419Q9E906QH)

I once walked on Whernside in what at the time I was sure must be around 100mph winds. Moving was extremely difficult, children couldn't manage it at all. On the summit adults were pretty much pinned close to the ground behind the wall inching along. A challenging day to say the least, I'm a big chap myself and was frequently blown off the path and at times almost blown over. I later discovered the wind was probably actually closer to 50 mph.

It's only £10.49 and doubles up as a thermometer.  :-\  *Rob gets out credit card*  :D

Probably about 30 with 40-50 gusts then.

I dislike walking in strong wind because of the way it seems to suck the breath out of you. Do others experience that (and perhaps they can describe it better)?

I once experienced a gale in the night in Snowdonia that kept bringing my tent down. The strongest gusts ripped the pegs out, until I went out and carried rocks back one at a time and looped each guy around them. I could hear each gust coming before it hit me. I was later told they were up to 70 m.p.h.

Arrived today. Thanks ninthace! This toy is coming with me on every outing now. In fact I'll go practice with it in the garden tomorrow morning when I put my laundry out (if I don't go for a walk, both are on my to do list).

I think the temperature sensor is broken it thinks it's 18.7 degrees Celsius in Appleby-in-Westmorland today. :( The forecast says 8 degrees. I'd have said somewhere about 12 if asked to guess. Wonder if it's picking up my body temperature? But I have to hold it, puzzled.

Does it read out temperature continuously?  If so leave it to stand for 5min to stabilise.  Then take it indoors and see if it changes.

Yes it changes, I've got thermometers indoors assuming they're right it's 7 degrees out, but I'm assuming it's not a nice constant error of 7 degrees. I put it on the table so it's not body heat. Someone else in the Amazon comments complained it's 5 degrees out so I'm not alone in getting a duff reading.

Looks like it is Tango Uniform - return it.

Will do. The only one on the other site within price range is 3 times as much but I guess with this type of instrument you get what you pay for. I've opted for this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001ALR5OC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_69nRCbVT7390S) one from Amazon made by Technoline, one of the makes from the other site.

Something's not right here this device gives the temperature as too hot too, although it's less far out than the first one. I'm in someone else's house without the thermometers I have at home but I turned their heating thermostat up and the heating clicked on about 17 degrees, this device makes it 20.8 degrees (which is about what it makes it outside too - I don't think so). Did I just get very unlucky and get another faulty device or is something else going on here?

Does it change at all?  20.8 is a reasonable indoors temp.   Mechanical thermostats are not a reliable means of measuring temp.  Stick it in the fridge for 15 mins should read 6-8.  (I know the book says 4.4 but my drinks fridge has to be cranked right up to get that low, the kitchen fridge can get to 6 on a good day).  Digital thermometers can give a false reading if left to stand in full sun too - the one in my lounge shoots up if the sun hits it.

Edit: Just checked my kitchen fridge - it is at 7.5 according to my fridge/freezer thermometer

Single glazed home with the heating off. I'm usually quite good at guessing the temperature on account of playing it as a game as a child and I'd say this feels about 16 too. It's not 20 degrees outside where it thinks it is too - I'd put £1000 on it.

When I get home where I've got digital thermometers I'll try it again and stick it in my fridge after that.

Makes it 18.2 degrees in my flat where it's 14 degrees. Although I only left it in my fridge for 3 minutes it still read 18.2. Another return I think.  :(
