Hi Redeye.
Another great review.
Lovely photos of a Beautiful Quarry Bank Mill area I know very well and have my daily walks around here .
As I live just over a mile from Styal village .
I call " England personified"
I know all the places you have walked and described .
It never ceases to amaze me ,no matter what season of the year it it .
All the colours of the woods and trees and the flowing meandering Bollin river are pleasing to the eye .
Living locally over forty years apart from been my walking and cycling area .
It was also my running and training ground to build up stamina
Especially those countless steps .
And the steep ascent out of Styal mill up to the Apprentice house
Having to do 10 repetitions up and jog back down
But what took your mind off it all was the beauty of the place .
" A hidden Gem"
Also the ' Dark History of The Mill'
And the Estates.
All around there are tracks and trails .
A mostly paths that visitors stick to as they are guided by the National Trust leaflets .
But I have found and you showed all off the beaten track .
Not many people know .
Like the cobble path by the mill past the gardens going to Morley Green is supposedly Haunted .
Having been there in the Autumn and Winter
Running late evenings certainly give you an Eerie feeling .
Also the woods and quirky bridges have a magical feel to them also the lovely views across the fields changing colours of the landscape .
All on the doorstep of Manchester Airport .
And the trails around there to .
Wonderful place .

You miss Tatton park ::) also.
And Delamere Forest , Lymm Dam,
and the Mersey Forest (Marbury park) Near Northwich .
:o Ah Cheshire has so many places to walk and visit.

A long time ago (about 1966) I was studying geology (among other things) and cycled to Helsdale Quarry (SJ702869) in my summer vacation. I found it to be a magical place, though I didn't find any fossils. I don't know how accessible it is now but, back then, I was able to paddle around the edge of the pool. Have any other of you relatively local people been there?

About Helsdale Quarry.
I have done lots of circular walks around The Lymm area .
One of the walks was heading West from Lymm along the Bridgewater canal to Outrington and crossed Grantham bridge down to Lower Helsdale woods on a path going East past Spud wood over Outrington lane followed a path to Lonbutts lane back to
Lymm.
I must have been close to the Helsdale Quarry you described .
Which is likely to be In Helsdale Wood.

Indeed, it is! It's not named on modern maps, it seems, but the small blue lake marks the spot.

Ah, yes, been past it quite a few time then. No it isn't named on the map, that's the confusing bit but I have been around the area. Thanks for pointing it out O0

I went for my local walk to Styal
Through the Village passing the 39 Steps restaurant , the Ship Inn and Earlams grocery coffee shop all nice places for food and drinks when visiting The Styal Estates .
Then down past the thatched cottages to the little quaint Metodist church along the path to the tenants cottages onto the cobbled streets with the Olde worlde shop where the Gregs estate workers from the mills ,
over Two hundred years ago paid their shilling wages into the co-operative society for local grown food .
Along the path to pad the old Saxon cross through through gate into the grounds of the beautiful preserved Norçliffe Chapel and down the pathway to Chapel woods decending down the dark canopy of the trees to cross Kingfisher bridge and cross over Oxbow bridge onto the Island with The Bollin River in full flow with all the rain .
Then taking a path back up to pass the ornamental terraced gardens with lovely floral layout, along the path that went down the hill to the Hub Visitors area .
Beside the Quarry bank mill, with a shop , Ice cream parlour and Regency estate houses .
Then took the path leading to the Weir sluice gates to change the flow of the water for the mill,
Walked around what we called Herons pool
to see various type of birds .
This Is a tranquil part of the estate to sit and peruse and listen to the water flowing gently .
on leaving walked up the steep steps to the higher terraced area .
Bypassing the trail that leads down to Worms hill and Twinneys bridge .
Following parts of the North Cheshire Way .
Going along the new reception area and car park .
Headed past the famous Apprentice house .
Where many young children resided .
Some where Orphans and Unwanted children .
Worked in the Mill for the Gregs Family to earn the keep bed and board .......
Poor little souls worked long hours mostly twelve hours a day .
Then followed Holts lane out past the old row of cottages onto busy traffic of Styal Road .
Whilst walking around many paths and trails
on the Estates ,you are taken back in time to the past of a Beautiful area .
