The Old Crown Round
« on: 22:01:06, 22/10/08 »
Many readers and contributers to this forum will have heard of the 'Old Crown Round' of the fells 'Back o' Skidda' in the Northern Lakes. Some of you will no doubt have completed this round of, originally, four fells which lent their name to the wonderful brews dreamed up by the hop and barley alchemist legend that is Jim Fearney, and if you have done it , you probably picked up your certificate and drank your free pint at the pub.

For those that don't know about the Old Crown Round it was established almost two decades ago by the aforementioned Jim Fearney, formerly landlord of the Old Crown and master brewer and founder of Hesket Newmarket Brewery.  Jim is now retired but the brewery and pub, both now owned by a collective of beer enthusiasts, continue to go from strength to strength. The Old Crown Round too has moved on since those early days. The Hesket Brewery now has another beer named after one of the Caldbeck Fells - High Pike - making five in all.

On 20th June 2009 the 'New' Old Crown Round will be inaugurated in a mass event. This is open to both walkers and runners and everyone who completes the round will get a certificate and a free pint in the Old Crown on completion. In keeping with the original Round set up by Jim and his wife Liz, there will also be a cask of the appropriate ale or porter on each of the five summits to provide a little something to whet the whistle along the way. All entrants to the Round will be timed in and out and a cup will be presented to the runner with the fastest time. The round will start and finish at the Old Crown Hesket Newmarket.  Entry is restricted to the first 120 applicants and applications can be made on-line at www.wanderingaengustreks.com [nofollow]. The entry fee is £15 and all proceeds will go to the Lake District Mountain Rescue association.

See you there.
