The only gadgets I take on a hike are mobile phone + small charging unit and handheld GPs unit + spare batteries, in case of an emergency, and a small digital camera. I go on a hike to escape modern living.

but, without modern living you wouldn't have your mobile phone, small charging unit, handhelp gps and digital camera  :D :D :D

I think the best app on my phone is Skype, so easy to contact people, the picture and sound quality is usually fantastic and when 'somewhere' I can show people around and chat at the same time. Great to introduce people I meet en route to my wife. She thinks I'm a bit bonkers but it gives us both a good laugh.

Call me old fashioned but the only gadget I take with me is a cheap little mobile phone ...
Well said. Me too.

Yup, that as well - not sure I'd describe it as 'gadgetry' though.

Is a headtorch a gadget? I have one in my bag at all times.

My Jetboil zip stove.
I bought it two years ago, but have not got around to using it much as i had hoped.
Last week, whilst climbing Cadair Idris, i decided to take it with me, so i tucked it away in the boot of my car.

A Curry flavoured Pot Noodle, and a gorgeous pre mixed cuppa later, and i was warm as toast.

There are items of kit, that ive bought and sadly neglected over the years, the thought of lugging them around with me, seemed a bit of a chore, unnecessary weight i suppose.

My jetboil will now remain tucked away in my car boot, its a worthy bit of kit, and who knows, on those longer walks, it may travel around with me.

Guess it will keep the Thommen Altimeter company  ;)

An altimeter, ah yes, ive got one of those on my wall, a rather nice FCC barometer, i bought in an antiques shop in Porthcawl many years ago.
You must be confusing me with another forum member, as ive never owned an altimeter, if i lived in the Alps i may have a use for one, but what use are they in Snowdonia?.

I certainly own a Jetboil stove, and even though its a bit cumbersome to carry around, it worked wonders last week.
