It started at the weekend and has been getting worse since, they thought they had put it out Sunday night but it flared up again. You can smell the smoke even over here in Tyldesley

I live in Stockport, probably about 18 miles away and I left the windows open in my living room last night, this morning you could smell the smoke all over the house. My wife's had to close the windows today as she said its only gotten worse.

It is very close to the PW, on the section above Crowden, the smoke might be thick I could see and smell it in manchester city centre yesterday
But I don't know if it's walkable at the moment?

Leave only footprints, take only photographs, kill only time ...

Looks pretty grim to me - with the peat on fire, it may never be the same again.

The National Trail website has an article posted yesterday saying it may be affected between Crowden and Standedge, but doesn’t say it’s actually closed. Don’t think I would fancy walking that bit at the moment though.  :(

I wouldn't fancy it either with all that smoke. NASA released a photo taken yesterday from their Terra Satellite showing the smoke blowing across Greater Manchester & Lancashire

There is also now a fire on Winter Hill https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/live-winter-hill-fire-moorland-14842549
I should imagine they will close part of the Pennine Way as it goes across Winter hill.

PW?I think the fire in question is on the Winter Hill north of Horwich and east of Rivington.

Apparently it was arson.

Just awful, especially if it is arson. Apparently it's come at the worst possible time due to ground nesting birds still sitting on eggs or having very young chicks, and it could take years for the flora and fauna in th earea to recover. Devastating.
