Why is Paull called Paull? Does it refer to somebody called Paul?

No idea to be honest pleb.  I've often wondered how place names got their name  :-\

Nice TR Mel  O0

I know what you mean about doing the same walks near where you live, it is best to do them less often  :)

Cheers April.  Trouble is, this is my favourite of all my local walks - I have 4 other regular local walks but this one feels like a "proper" walk for some reason (despite it being only a couple of miles).

Cheers wombat.  Feel free to give me a yell if you do decide to visit - I literally live 5 minutes away.  Oh, word of warning though, the path around the mudflats (heading towards Cherry Cobb Sands / Stoney Creek) is currently blocked due to erosion and flood prevention works  :(
Cheers for that Mel, will be there sometime this year as I live in Bridlington now but will be returning to Paull as it will always remind me of my Dad . would be good to meet a fellow forum member for a walk
Thanks again, Ian

I was brought up in Hull, and as a young lad, myself and a few mates used to cycle to Paull and I vaguely remember exploring the ruins of an old fort. Would this have been what is now a museum?

More recently, while visiting family at Christmas time about 3 or 4 years ago, I decided I needed to get out for a short walk to clear my head (as is usually needed at that time of year). I got in my car and somehow got drawn to Paull, parked up and went for a stroll. I'm pretty sure I followed a similar route to yours.

Very possibly.  It has been transformed into "Fort Paull Battery".  The only other place I can think of that you might mean is a tower (possibly an old watchtower or folly) which was, until recently, quite ramshackle - it's not a museum though and (officially) is on private land though it's not hard to get to  ;)

Hmm...now I'm curious Mel. My main recollection is of climbing down some steel ladders into some kind of underground vaults or tunnels. These are very vague memories though as I was probably only 11 or 12 at the time.

I'll be in the area again later this year, so will try and pay Paull a visit and investigate.  O0

Ahhh!  Well.  Were these steel ladders down a sort of rectangle manhole?  In the woodland?

If they were, I know exactly where you went exploring!  Young lads today still go exploring down them  :)

Well, I'm not sure I want to know now  :) I think it was in woodland.

So was it simply some drain manhole I was wallowing in all those years ago?  :o Although I thought there was more to it than that.

Must be an age thing.

Haha  ;D  It just looks like a drain manhole... hidden in the woodland... near a fortress.  You show me a 12 year old lad who wouldn't want to explore it  O0

I think I'll give my re-visit a miss then. Somehow a drain manhole doesn't have the same appeal for a "grown up".  :)

As a grown up, you probably wouldn't fit down it anyway  :o

I didn't think you were "body shaming" me (to use modern parlance  ::) ).

Just a display of mock shock  ;)
