Having said that I have had little experience with this as I am a bit of a champagne hiker.

What is a Champagne hiker?

In the same way that a champagne socialist shunned the company of the working class and still proclaimed to be a socialist, I shun tents but profess to be a hiker.

Me too - I'm a hiker, not a camper these days.

And me. Mrs BFM has decided she is not a fan of camping

It was only once I got to this forum I discovered there's some snobbery around the word hike. According to the dictionary a hike is a long walk, especially in the country. Some of my walks take 5-7 hours, I class that as a hike. In one dictionary I just checked the example was a 5 mile walk.

If I've got my boots on, it's a hike.  If not it's a walk.

That's a good working definition IMO. My only concern is that the advent of trekking shoes may complicate matters. Can trekking shoes go on a hike?

Hike? Walk? Ramble (the R word)?

Couldn't care less, to be honest!
