Looks like a good offer but only the first 350 subscribers get the machine. What's the magazine like?

Trail is quite a good read. Has some interesting features, advice, gear reviews and walking routes.

Anyone thinking of purchasing an Etrex might be interested in this offer, it worked for me  :)

http://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/store/displaystore.asp?sid=3470

I've been looking at that offer but not quite sure what the GPS does :-\ Can you download maps etc or is it more like a compass. Is it worth the subscription and are they (this model) really useful?? As you can guess I don't have much experience in this field!
Cheers

Its quite basic but does everything I need! You can plot route on websites like bike hike and upload them to the gps and it shows you the way to go lol. I just use it to get a grid reference off then take a bearing with map and compass. Not a bad deal at all really but you do need to get a lead if you want to upload routes

Which Windows version are you running?  Because you have the basic Etrex it uses a serial interface, there's a bit of trickery needed to make it work  ;)

Should be able to help though once I know what you're running.  Also which program are you using?

That's good cos Vista can be a problem!  I'm at work now now, but will come back to you tomorrow morning  O0

Assume you did switch your Etrex on?

yes, it is switched on and powered up.

I gotta say, that Garmin Basecamp program looks totally useless.

Thanks for trying to help me, I've had enough for one night, will try again tomorrow.

It might be that Windows can't find the port that is being used. If so, then you will need to do a manual search. This can be done through Control Panel and Device Manager.
I had that problem with mine, on both XP and Vista.
