This is from a week last Sunday. We slept in on Sunday and were too late to catch the bus for the Lakes. The weather forecast wasn't that great in the Lakes anyway so we didn't mind doing a local walk. We got the bus to Hayton Lane End to walk through Gelt Woods en route to Talkin Tarn. We hadn’t managed to get out on Saturday as Beefy had trouble with too much snow and the trains going wrong.

Beefy in Gelt Woods

Snowy hills from the bridleway to Capon Tree

We felt the cold wind here coming from the east, it was bitter

Beefy on the bridleway toward Capon Tree

We'd put our microspikes on in the house, they were useful most of the time except when they balled up in the snow that was wet.

On the footpath by Wreay

The snow here had been cleared by a tractor with a plough on. Otherwise the Wreay residents would have been snowed in, this is their access road.

Talkin Tarn

The cloud was low today and the views toward the fells were non existent
It was freezing in the wind at times going around the tarn

The snow covered boats at Talkin Tarn

There was nobody rowing on the tarn today

Ice on Talkin Tarn

We stopped for lunch in the trees and Beefy set the storm shelter up with guy lines. It was smashing, it kept the cold wind off us and we didn't have to hold it up, you can do that again Beefy  :)

Icicles in the trees

Beefy in the kissing gate

This is the kissing gate on the footpath leading to and from Talking Tarn. We had to climb over it as the snow was deep and solid here. We walked to Brampton from here retracing our steps on the Wreay footpath to Capon Tree then turned right to Brampton. A nice walk despite the cold wind. Our route was Hayton Lane End - Middle Gelt Bridge - Gelt Woods - Wreay Footpath - Tarn Road - Talking Tarn - Tarn Road - Wreay footpath - Brampton. 11.9km with 45m ascent.

Lovely photos again April.
It is hard to remember that a week ago there was snow about.

Especially liked the view from the bridleway, April.  :)

There were a few walls around our way last week and the week before where you could simply walk over the top because of the snow and some of the pavements on the A6 disappeared althogether under the huge piles cleared by the snow ploughs. Looked impressive at first but soon turned to a grim, dirty brown-grey colour.

You look nice and toasty in your tent, though, despite the cold outside.  O0

Lovely photos April    :)   I particularly like the one of icicles in the trees with the tracery of the branches against the sky

We were inside the storm shelter, beefy had used the loops to hang it from the trees, it was nice and warm inside

Lovely photos April    :)
