The Trent Valley Way???
« on: 16:58:09, 03/09/18 »
Hey! Just joined up to the forum and looking for some long walks and hikes to do around the Nottinghamshire/Yorkshire/Lincolnshire area.

I want to tackle the Trent Valley Way but struggling to find any thorough guides.
I have found a book online called "The Trent Valley Way" By Dennis Pettott but it looks like it very rare and proving hard to pin down.

Anyone have any suggestions or could point me in a good direction on finding out more info on this hike.

Thanks!

The 147 mile Viking Way runs thru Lincolnshire

The route passes from the Humber, through the Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the market town of Horncastle, the Lincolnshire Limewoods, the City of Lincoln, the southern Lincolnshire Edge and the Kesteven Uplands before entering Leicestershire and Rutland.

I haven't been able to find much info on the Trent Valley Way; mostly on local government sites.

I have only one map that covers the area, OS Landranger sheet 128, and the TVW is not shown, but there is The Way for The Millennium which follows the Trent Valley near Rugeley and Burton-upon-Trent
There are also some other Ways that could be interesting to do, such as the National Forest Way and The Ivanhoe Way

But you don't need to be spoon fed with a named, waymarked route. England has a huge network of footpaths, why not get some maps and work out your own route? It should be a bit easier as you already have a line to follow and rivers usually have paths near them and connecting the local villages
Go to your library, and if you need to buy them, this place is as good as any

Ah! I've just found the Trent Valley Way on this website www.ldwa.org.uk
They show details like a map, waymark symbols, start & finish, and contact details, but it only runs from just east of the M1 near Nottingham to The Humber

Be warned; Newark-on-Trent has horrendous traffic problems at the moment as they are re-doing the sewers.

The Trent Valley Way is open and waymarked from Trent Lock (near Long Eaton) to the Humber.

There's information about it here:

There's leaflets for circular walks on the Trent Vale website (though the Ontrent weblink doesn't work).

The section from Stoke to Trent Lock didn't open in 2011 (as it should have done) due to the bankers' crash.

There's now a more or less agreed route from near Rugeley to Trent Lock and the completion of this depends on a Heritage Lottery bid being successful. I know this as I surveyed the section from near Repton to Trent Lock late 2017 and again early 2018.

This should be waymarked and open by the end of 2020 (the works mainly being carried out by local volunteer groups such as the Melbourne Footpaths Group).

I presume there won't be a proper guide until the route is completed.

Brilliant,

Thanks guys. Really good info there. Didn't realise that the rout wasn't official complete!

All the more fun making up or amending the official rout.

Cheers!
