Fan y Big downgraded
« on: 20:06:41, 18/08/18 »
Countless times I’ve stood on the diving board of Fan y Big, but the next time it’ll be on a hill not a mountain

By a ridiculous 5ft, and insufficient gradient to make the grade of mountain status.
It makes you wonder how many other lofty hills are in the firing line of the O/S zealots.

Its almost as if certain officials are going out of their way to demote once majestic mountains into a mere hill

Glyder Fawr became a 1000m monster by less than 2ft.
This measuring method, for a mountain to be demoted into a mere hill, is a bit pointless.

We all know Fan Y Big, is a mountain, why should a measurement prove otherwise.

Height should never really be the issue, a mere 5ft difference in elevation, to demote a once majestic mountain into a hill. >:(

Now if it had been 100ft, well maybe, but 5ft, leave the mountains of Wales alone.

We can call them hills or mountains, its their sheer presence on the South Wales skyline, seen as far south as Pontypridd and the valleys.

We know their mountains because they tower over everything around them.

Oh, now it's only a hill, I should be able to manage it then.  It was far too challenging before when it was a mountain  ::)

Pathetic. Such classifications are entirely arbitrary.

Who has the right to dictate what is and isn't a mountain?  >:(

It all seems a bit daft to me, there’s always some bright spark with a new measuring stick  ::)

Personally I've always regarded the Beacons as hills rather than mountains.  Never looked at what they are officially 'classed'  O0

If you use the Nuttall definition rather than the Hewitt, it's still a mountain. Whatever it is, it's a great place to walk - and I must get back there some day when I can stand on the diving board rather than being on my hands and knees trying not to get blown off the edge!

Its certainly tall enough to give any walker serious issues in bad weather.
I remember back in the late 1980s, getting caught in a total whiteout on the Craig Pwllfa to Fan Y Big ridge,  very scary, and not the place to be caught out if ill equipped.

It was full winter conditions, and unlike today, i took every bit of necessary kit with me, just incase, as i knew conditions would be bad, but it was frightening just the same.

Its easily understandable why the special forces come to grief on these Mountains, they offer no shelter in bad weather, and are high enough to be a serious issue in the wrong conditions.

Fan Y Big, Hill or Mountain, its not a place to linger when the weather is far from ideal.

Dare i say it, the Brecon Beacons are more dangerous for the unprepared than even Snowdonia.
