Title: Kendal Mint Cake
Post by: fernman on 08:38:33, 01/04/17
The makers of Kendal Mint Cake have announced that in line with the sugar tax that is coming into force in 2018, and to help the drive to combat obesity, they are launching a new sugar-free bar in which the traditional recipe of sugar and glucose has been replaced largely by stevia plus other ingredients that they are keeping secret. The new product is expected to be widely available from the end of this month, and it will replace the original formula, which is being phased out.

Yes, they are changing the name of it too.  It will be called Kendal Mint Fool.   :D

That's beyond belief, just because 99% of the countries population are too damn lazy to get off their feet, and take part in some moderate exercise, we want to make life easier for them.

Kendal Mint cake, especially the chocolate covered variety, is manner from heaven for those of us who choose to look after our bodies, but just because the majority are just too lazy to do something about their obesity, the rest of us have to swallow the bitter pill.

Why should the tiny minority have to suffer, and be denied our favourite treats, because sugar is seen as the big evil.

If Kendal Mint Cake had the right mindset, they should allow those who have the willpower to get their yummy snack on free prescription.

It will be the Mars Bar, and Sherbert Leomons next.

That's beyond belief...

 ;D

As an aside (on 2 April) I think Kendal Mint Cake is one of the most unpalatable confections ever devised.

So they plan to change the sugar part for lots of chemicals, Stevia and 'other (secret?) ingredients'? Will they be all tested to ensure they are not carcinogenic? Do you think they would even bother telling us? After all, business is business, gotta make a profit!!

Even 20 years ago my GP always said that he considered that the two most dangerous substances to human beings on this planet are sugar and salt! He also told me if I die of one or the other he's going to haunt me in the afterlife. Personally, I think Kendall Mint Cake is really horrible, I never did like it. I assume some people love it?

You are quite right, Ridge.
Perhaps now is the time for me to confess:
My opening post made on April 1st was completely made up!  >:D
Those who expressed upset seem to have missed the obvious point that the Mint Cake is made of sugar and glucose to give an energy boost, which would be absent if these were replaced by artificial sweetener.

Don't worry Mel, in a few posts time someone will read the first post not bother with the others and be outraged.

On a none walking forum the Mods made changes to the skin on 1st April and me and another forum member had a proper handbags-at -dawn about it while also PMing each other. The Mods, realising what was going on, deleted any posts from others which mentioned the date. It was great fun.

Kendal Mint Cake....it's not a mint and it's not a cake, it's a cross between soap and mouthwash  :D

That is to denigrate soap and mouthwash! The only saving grace of KMC is that you will never be hungry if you have some in your pack on the basis that if you are, you would have to eat it.

Kendal Mint Cake is on the banned list (vile, horrible stuff it is) so it makes no difference if the ingredients are being changed  ;)  :)

Shame I missed the other posts that have been deleted  :D

Edited to add, I have just realised Ridge posted about deleted posts that were on another forum  ;D

Kendal Mint Cake is still seen as one of the most beneficial quick energy boost, snacks on the outdoor market, that's why it's been a favourite of many walkers for over a hundred years.
It may be incredibly high in sugary content, but when ones glucose energy reserves are almost depleted, it has that amazing effect of recharging the battery's.
On reading some more background to Romney's, Quiggins and a few other companies who developed  the sugar bar, back in the very early part of the last century, as such was it's popularity, John Hunt and the successful 1953 Everest team used it, whilst on the mountain.

It's a bit like Marmite, you either like the incredibly sweet taste of Mint Cake or you do not.

Its been a while since ive bought any, but the chocolate covered version is a favourite of mine.

What will the Government target next.?

Placing a tax on sugar, will do nothing at all to the majority of people living in the Uk.

The overweight alway's complain about the yummy things in life, the things that are making them obese.

Many people have the capacity to do something about their weight, but because there is no easy fix to their problem, they lay the blame on sugar in food.

The easy answer to that, is eat less sugar, and burn off a few of those unwanted calories.

Well done, I believed it and it bought out my views about food 'improvements', I'm very suspicious when scientists start mucking about with food. I remember reading 'Fat is a feminist Issue' by Susie Orbach years ago, about obesity and at the time it was a very popular book.

Obesity is an interesting subject which I suspect has many causes. One of them could be an indicator of a mental health problem, an undiagnosed medical issue, depression, personal unhappiness and so on but one thing always seems to be very viewable when seeing obese people in the flesh is that they eat too much!

I know someone who is very overweight, she had her stomach made smaller by surgery and she lost weight for a while. Now she is as big as before the operation.

The other book I remember reading was 'Dieting makes you fat!', I always thought that this was sound advice. I've never dieted and I'm still about the same weight as I was when I was 20. Human beings are rather odd I think!

Blimey, you have keen eyesight.
I knew John Hunt and his crowd, enjoyed chomping away on this sugary energy giving snack, but here's the proof.
Without doubt, Mr Hillary and Mr Tenzing, would never have reached the summit, without scoffing a few bars of Mint Cake.

Over the top Sugary content maybe, but energy provider in the 8000m DEATH ZONE, Without Question.

You'll get sued for slander!

(Not a fan of it myself, actually. Took a slab on one of my early trips, it seemed the thing to do, and each time I ate some I felt sick afterwards. Binned the remaining half.)

Its certainly powerful stuff, and sickly sweet for most peoples pallet, but as a food source for returning an exhausted walkers glycogen reserves back to normal, its almost without equal.

Actually it isn't.  It's good for raising blood sugar levels, to restore glycogen you need carbs  ::)

...but KMC is supposed to be an emergency food, isn't it? If it was a nice sweetie, then you'd be tempted to eat it just for enjoyment - and then you would have the emergency food any more.
You can't have your (Kendal Mint) cake and eat it.
Actually, I never saw the sense in that saying. Of course you can have your cake and eat it. It should be - 'you can't eat your cake and still have it'  surely.
Title: Re: Kendal Mint Cake
Post by: Islandplodder on 15:43:47, 05/04/17

I believe the saying started off as you can't eat your cake and have it.
I haven't had Kendal Mint Cake in years, but I used to like it, and invariably failed to keep it for emergencies.  I wonder if it is like dandelion and burdock, a huge treat 50 years ago, but a massive disappointment when it hits the adult tastebud.

Funnily enough there are some things I find too sweet - such as almost any variety of cheesecake. Whereas I don't mind KMC  ::)
Although I wouldn't take it with me as an energy boost. I prefer a mix of nuts & berries for that.

I keep threatening to get a bar of KMC to throw in the bottom of my rucksac with the rest of my "emergency kit", however my wife pointed out to me it would be a waste of time as if I ever was in that sort of survival situation I would rather chew my own arm off than eat the KMC :D
