Pete - the Sony software is ok, but Lightroom would blow you away. I've been usig it for about a month or so now and it's so much easier to use and you can do loads more with it. Image processing is so eay and quick. It does eat up your memory though, I've just been out and bought a new PC as the old was dying trying to run it! You would also still need Photoshop or Elements alongside of it, as there's certain things you can't do in Lightroom.

I use the Sony software that comes with the camera and shoot in RAW format - thats what the software is for. But I guess you know that anyway ;)

Thanks for answering Pete
I was just being nosey as to what software you use. Yes RAW needs processing for the picture as it is snap shoot of the information at the sensor, a digital negative so to speak.
I am just a Pocket compact Camera user but have read of RAW. I am stuck with throw away some of the image jpeg. :)

To put it in laymans terms.

RAW is raw data of the sensor, what you get is what you took as the camera saw it. RAW tends to come out a little flat and desaturated and needs to be brought back to life in an editer. Also you have more scope to recover lost data in RAW like highlights without image degradation.

JPG - Standard picture format. A camera will do its own post processing to its own standard, hence why it comes out more vibrant than RAW. They're usually configured in such a way they are overly bright and overly saturated. Not much scope for recovery without image degradation.

So what software do you use then Pete?

Raises the debate is it the camera, the software or the person, to my untrained mind it is what use you make of what you have.  I am just a point and shoot snaps person but software can correct so many errors these days or allow you to change something you wished was different, darker, lighter or colour cast and focus.

Missed this for some reason.

I spent all weekend trying to persuade Dan to try lightroom out, now he has I think he likes it!

I like to get as much as I can right in camera, but for reasons I stated above you need to do a little post processing work (yawn, I hate it, it bores me) and lightroom is the quickest and simplest way of doing this for me. It almost feels pure, like your taking it to what it should be.

Great selection of photos from everyone.
Looking at the standard of pictures and having read James's trip report too, if I could have made this meet, I would have been asking so many how to, questions.
Glad you all had a good time and that the weather was in your favour.

John.
