Terra Nova - whats this on the groundsheet
« on: 17:23:44, 10/06/19 »
Hi,
Terra Nova - whats this on the groundsheet?
Tent dates back to 1990s, was in storage (my cupboard) for a year.  It was put away dry.
What are these marks on the groundsheet and how do I get rid of them.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

I've noticed similar on the flysheet of an ancient Vango Force 10 that I sold a couple of months back - I suspect that it is the PU proofing disintegrating, which I believe it does with time, no matter how well the tent is stored. Easy to re-proof a flysheet, but not so sure that you would get the total waterproofing required for a groundsheet.

My 1990s Wild Country Trisar is not suffering from this problem though - slept in it last night, in fact - the groundsheet is still perfect.

You could test it - erect the tent and pour some water into it - maybe put a shallow pan under the groundsheet and pour the water onto the groundsheet above that, to see if any leaks through.

Thank you for the reply.

I'll give it a test but I don't hold out much hope.
Looking online a replacement groundsheet may work with  a proper job sewing it ?

Its an ultra quasar, so will be sorry to see it go.

Addition -
It'll be roughly £90 to £110 to replace the groundsheet (including postage), it'll give me something to ponder.
Thanks for your help.

Happy to help.

If the rest of the tent is in good condition, then it is probably worth getting the new groundsheet fitted - it is a fine tent!

One issue fixed by Scottish Mountain Gear.

Think I'll have to do the next one myself. Any recommendations as to how to go about this ? I was hoping remove tape and use  GearAid  Seam Grip

Thanks

Looks as if they did a decent job.

By a strange coincidence I have just spent the last hour re-taping some knackered seams on my old Wild Country Trisar. I used a tape with a hot melt adhesive that you apply using a warm iron (I used the Silk setting), applying heat and pressure for about 10 seconds. Seems to do the job well, but obviously I'll have to wait until the first time out in the rain to know for sure.

This is what I used. Not cheap, but appears to be a good quality product.

PS - I didn't do the whole tent - only the triangle of seams at the top of the tent (The Trisar is essentially a 3 pole single ended Quasar), as these are virtually horizontal, and this is where the tent leaked (above the entrance). Any leaks lower down will just run down the inside of the fly to the ground.

They use 'PU Nylon black, normally 4oz' for the groundsheets. Probably a lot lighter and more up to date that what was originally on it.

I went the cheaper option and ordered McNett Gear Aid Seam Grip WP Sealant & Adhesive (2 x 7g tubes) at £9.99 delivered.
I'll spend time cleaning it up and just do it in stages. Hopefully it'll go ok.

I've been trying to use the sealant to make the flap stick down.

Do I only need to cover the stitching from this side, and not bother about the flap at all ?

No experience of using a seam sealant I'm afraid. Perhaps other forum members can advise?

I'm no expert but I've always just run a bead along either side.
