If anyone fancies company on a walk in the Dales tomorrow, I'm free!
I'm steady but get there...
Off to the Peaks to get educated ;D
Just been on a great navigation course this weekend with Flowerpot and feeling much more confident about being more adventerous in devising my own walks. Looking at doing the next course to take it a step further already :)
Thankyou Michael, Flowerpot and I had a great day out O0
This is quite interesting. I've read lots of books, but there is probably nothing like going on a walk with someone with vast experience, provided they're willing to pass on some of that knowledge. I've not considered a guided walk previously, but perhaps I will now.
Who runs the course and where is it based ?
Great news Glyders
I am sure to get my commission ;D
so when are we going out map reading
Brilliant Sioban. Like you I know my maps back to front & upside down, should do I worked in cartography! But the compass, though I have some knowledge, its somewhat rusty. Shall be looking this one up if you recommend it.
Glad you all had a positive & welcoming day & thanks for the info. O0
I wish you a speedy recovery from your eye surgery Sue so you can get out and about again. O0

I wish you a speedy recovery from your eye surgery Sue so you can get out and about again. (http://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/afro.gif)Second that!
I have the day off tomorrow, the forecast looks good - best in the east. I'm going for a walk in the Peak District, the Mam Tor ridge above Castleton - not done that one for years.Lovely... used to be my training walk! At least once a week...

Topely Pike on Sunday.Take your time and enjoy it! :)
It will be my first "proper" walk after cutting my teeth on local tracks for the first three months of my new hobby. ;D

I am off to Carsington Water, Derbyshire. Never been there before, looking forward to it. I need to get out, boots on. Work is hell at the moment. A chance to let off some steam... :)
Would really want well defined paths similar in lenght/terrain to the Yorks Three Peaks.
Any ideas where to go,
Thanks for this, now that I have made up my mind to attempt this one, I am struggling to find a route that I can print and use alongside my map. (not massivly experienced with map and compass but comfortable using one combined with a guide)
Edale skyline?
Have a look in this month's 'Trail' mag, or simply Google it. Start in Edale or Hope.
You lose your 'well defined path' across Brown Knoll, but then again it would make it more similar to Y3P having a nice bog to cope with?!
Cissbury ring, together with some friends visiting from France ... and some from UK, with a bit of geocaching thrown in, followed by a meal at our local Turkish restaurant ;)
to the pub and the chippy
Lovely. We did the Great Ridge & Castleton last week and some of us camped. Great walk.
Off in a mo up to the Yorkshire Dales for another, hopefully dry, meander. O0
Hi DalesWalesLakesandPeaks..... Must have seen you along the way and said hello!
I strated off in Hope and took the river path to Castleton,up Cave Dale and across to Mam Tor for around 12 noon. Then along the ridge Back Tor and Lose Hill the same as you. Glorious day and a lovely walk. Castleton is a lovely village and really fancied a pint but had a two hour drive back home so waited. Hope to return sometime soon though. Glad you had a good day too !! :)
It's been horrible stuck in work all day today, looking out at the lovely blue sky.I've an assistant at the moment who knows the Lakes well and it is the first time I've had a colleague who has understood my love of walking. We don't talk about it all the time but it is great when it crops up.
Where could I have been? ???
Work mates think i'm crazy.
On Sunday I shall be walking from the West end of Glasgow to Hampden Park and if all goes well by 5.00 walking back on the Clouds O0 support St Mirren on Sunday you know it makes senseYep I am walking on Air nothing to do with walking but I am a happy (drunk) man tonight
...Took two dental nurses to hold my head/jaw & two dentists taking it in turns 40 mins to pull it out of my jaw, so I'm feeling rather sore
Thank god for codein & neurofen O0 O0
..maybe see the exciting new shopping centre in Leeds 8)
Judging by the forecast, I'll be walking from home tomorrow and maybe Saturday too, as my car will be snowed in by the morning! lol
I quite fancy a walk in the Derbyshire Dales (White Peak), as they'll look fab with over a foot of snow everywhere! 8)
Once the roads are cleared again, I'll be heading straight for the hills in the Dark Peak!
Well I'm supposed to be running a navigation course on Kinder Scout......
It seems that winter is back vengeance! Will have to modify the plans a bit given the snow forecast.
I'm heading up to Newcastle tomorrow to start walking along Hadrian's Way - The weather looking a little wild :(
we're in the dark peak, it was supposed to be snowing from 6pm this evening...nothing yet sigh..hardly anything on the tops of the hills, maybe it will change by morning!
As part of my NYM National Park Volunteer Training I'm joining another ranger on duty at Hutton-Le-Hole tomorrow. Been promised 6 or 7 miles plus a guided tour round the museum. I have to do all the navigating.
Thankfully we've had no snow here in Filey. Not sure what it'll be like over on the moors though. The wind is cold enough to cut a person in half so I'm planning to wear about a million layers lol. :)
Up the British Tip,Good trip report! But what is the 'British Tip'? ???
Good trip report! But what is the 'British Tip'? ???
The only walking i'll be doing today is the back & forth to the hot plates at the local all you can eat chinese buffet....
Distance covered!!! all depends on how far we are placed from the buffet as theres 6 of us we'll be on one of the bigger tables ::)
So thats about 10 metres from table to buffet...
Another 15 to 25 metres walking round all the hot plates & theres four serving stations with hot plates..
Then 10 metres back..
So thats 35 to 45 metres times by how many times I go up to refill my plate :-\
Surely you have snow now! I can't see my car, let alone drive it anywhere :D The A6 is pretty bad now, as there's little traffic around to help keep it clear. Roads are closed all over the shop!
Don'tcha ya just love Spring! 8)
Well done! Must have been hard-going in that deep snow. The third photo? is that a person on the far right of the picture? or a blue sign?

A face watching in the trees?? (Theme from twilight zone) :D
Plannnnnning to take my first foray to Lakes - depending upon what the weatherman says midweek. Fingers crossed everyone.I hope you make it, much crossing of fingers.
I hope you make it, much crossing of fingers.
Sabroc...... Excellent photos! Glad you got the snow O0 Looks rather like the conditions I walked in on Saturday! Yesterday's walk was a little easier, thank god.
Heading for the higher hills tomorrow 8)
where do you class as higher hills? Kinder?
Possibly - it will depend on the roads and if they've been cleared yet. Planning to drive over that way first thing, then play it by ear. There are plenty of options along the way, if things don't go quite to plan. ;)
Planned North Dartmoor route for either Friday or Sunday. Route all defined tracks as weather looks wet: Sticklepath to Hangingstone Hill via Cosdon Hill, returning via Steeperton Gorge then down R Taw. Several fords on return leg so planned in some detours in case impassable (going solo so not wishing to take any chances). Can't wait. Got to get some pork pies in!
First trip out with the caravan this year at the weekend (fri - mon).Oh good grief! You're not one of THEM are you? ;D Jeremy Clarksons faves? Still if you [censored] him off at least you are doing a public service..... :-\
Just a short run down to Rutland. Some nice short (8 miles) walks down there, taking in sections of the Viking Way en route. So will get out a couple of times over the weekend. Nothing too challenging, just a gentle wander for a couple or three hours.
Oh good grief! You're not one of THEM are you? ;D Jeremy Clarksons faves? Still if you [censored] him off at least you are doing a public service..... :-\
Wave as you pass me ;D ;D I'm the one in the purple jacket. O0
Will do, and thanks for the welcome here! At the moment, Friday looks the clearer day. Can't wait!
Ridgeway, north of Goring. Sunday is forecast 18C and sunny! :) Well, they've got to get the forecast right once in a while, and I going with that one.
Weather forecasts via BBC website these days seem to be an exercise in hedging bets. With the outlook details changed every 3 or 4 hours for any location the Met people take the opportunity to forecast, at some point in the week, weather that will be much worse, a bit worse, a bit better and much better than what it actually turns out to be. I understand it's not precisely predictable 5 days ahead, but it seems to me the forecasts are a deliberate scatter around a given trend line.
Or maybe I'm getting cynical?
Monday again, It's cold; and that icy wind makes it feel a lot colder than the temperature readings suggest.
Anyhow, swmbo decided to visit the city (Cardiff) for some retail R&R and lunch out with friends. I got the walking boots ready; and dressed like an Eskimo, I headed for the hills. Lovely clear sky, just a few small clouds; but, boy oh boy, was it cold!
Ended up doing a nice 12, mile circle of the hills above the Taff-Fawr (westerly direction) to Cwm Cadlan. Here are some photos of the area. Please excuse the poor photography.
If you're getting cynical, then I have been for years. Ever since the 'there isn't going to be a hurricane' announcement by Michael Fish, the Met Office have hedged massively.
These guys seem pretty accurate http://metcheck.com/UK/#.UWUch6Jg80U (http://metcheck.com/UK/#.UWUch6Jg80U) although as you say, forecasting for the UK is difficult and not an exact science.
One passing comment: years ago, I emailed the Met Office and said "do you actually look out of the window to check your forecast against what's actually happening?" To their credit, they replied and said 'no', and that they relied on computer modelling. Honesty is a virtue, at least... :-\
Is that viaduct near Merthyr Tydfil, looks familiar ?
I heading to The Lakes tomorrow to Blea Rigg and Silver Howe :)My secret for a good nights sleep! O0
We went to Goring to try the Thames Path northwards, but it looked a bit like the Somme... So, over the bridge to the Ridgeway, northwards through some very posh streets/side roads. We eventually reached scraggy fields which were very boggy due to recent rain. The weather was warm and windy, but dry, and the scenery pretty bland. However - a walk is a walk in our book! O0Is this 'darn sarf'? My deepest commiserations... ::)
Is this 'darn sarf'? My deepest commiserations... ::)
Lucky old me is off to visit my Mother in Cornwall, and really hoping to factor in some of the coastal paths nearby, oh how excited am I? VERY!!! :)
West highland Way!
Does Monday count as the weekend? :)Clause 271 of the Weekend Act 1862... "Monday shall form part of the weekend according to local needs.." O0
Clause 271 of the Weekend Act 1862... "Monday shall form part of the weekend according to local needs.." O0
;D Thanks for that. I can now go walking tomorrow safe in the knowledge that it is still the weekend! Presumably the same Act applies to Fridays too? O0
What make is that mtb by the way?
No, no.. Fridays are covered by a separate law altogether! That's the 'End of week Act 1861'.. ???
Wouldn't have it any other way. We love this walking lark. O0
5 of us have just come back from a 2 day hike over the beacons with a wild camp thrown in, it was awesome had a fab time, will put up a trip report soon
No quite 'this weekend' :D but tomorrow morning before sunrise i'll be heading up Eccles Pike for the annual May Day dance, performed by the local Chapel Morris Men group. It'll be something different at least.
2 day navigation course for me this weekend O0 All I know is day 1 is in the Yorkshire Wolds and day 2 is in the Yorkshire Dales :)
Don't get lost... ::)
did the Jane Tomlinson 25mile (was actually 27mile) Dambuster walk in the Peak District on sunday last weekend, was really happy with my time and fitnessRespect O0
This weekend a short 10-12 mile stroll around Black Hill from Crowdon in the Peaks
Respect O0
Stuck at work all weekend, but, all being well, heading to the Peaks on Tuesday for Jacobs Ladder and Kinder Scout.
Blackhill from Crowdon completed, was 8.9 miles and I came away feeling like I hadn't walked long enough :o
I'm doing this walk tomorrow.
Did you come back over Tooleyshaw Moss?
Last time I did that I wasn't sure I could get out! It was horrible! Totally and utterly kn... tired..
yeah we came back over Tooleyshaw Moss, the path was a little difficult to pick up from the Trig Point at Black Hill
yeah we came back over Tooleyshaw Moss, the path was a little difficult to pick up from the Trig Point at Black Hill but it wasn't as wet or as boggy as I was expecting :)
Weather is looking good tomorrow!!
Following in your footsteps tomorrow Wakey Boy :) Hope you left of that bottle of Black Sheep at the top ;)Didn't go in a pub........I won't mention getting temporarily out of map alignment........ :-[
Didn't go in a pub........I won't mention getting temporarily out of map alignment........ :-[
have a BBQ tomorrow afternoon and a Stag do in the evening so off first thing to so a 10 mile Kinder Scout circular...in the rain :o
It's not the weather that will get me down it will be the Scouts moaning about how tired they are.
the main boggy bit was just after the Trig point for a 100 yds or so until we picked up the path...and then just the odd bit along the way that was easy to walk around, the weather has been dry today too which will help
enjoy :)
off up Helvellyn and blencathra on Friday and saturdayStriding & Sharp edges?? No stopping you now, it'll be the Crib next stop O0
Striding & Sharp edges?? No stopping you now, it'll be the Crib next stop O0
Buckden Pike.What day?
:)
Just planning a route this coming weekend starting at Llanddeusant, then Llyn Y Fan Fach, Bannau Sir Gaer, Fan Foel, Fan Brycheiniog and down to Llyn Y Fan Fawr. After that it's around the bottom of the cliff face, rounding Fan Foel and back to the car. It's about 8 miles or so and apparently a lovely walk with cracking views.
Is it passable Wayne, or is there a better way at that point?
We've had 3 days of heavy rain... according to the forecast, though its actually consisted of an hour of light rain.
Want to go walkies but the weather forecast is pretty grim :(
I'm going to try again and do The Band up Great End (weather permitting) on either Sat or Sun. Hoping for high enough cloud :)Doing the band up your great end? See a doctor perhaps? :-\
Doing the band up your great end? See a doctor perhaps? :-\
Likewise..... :-[
I only have a small end ;D
Not sure what I am doing yet :-\
Might have a ride and do some walk or something - fancy a coastal walk actually seeing as its give nice weather O0
Kayaking eh, never done that before.
Kayaking eh, never done that before.
You'll need a puncture repair kit - it's a canvas inflated Kayak. I put it in the boot of the car and carry it with me just in case I fancy something a little different to walking.
It's sort of like canoeing - except in a Kayak. There's some good sea Kayaking videos on youtube doing various coasts in UK. Try a Youtube search for cave kayaking. It's fantastic on a calm sea.
I'm looking :-\
You had a man look - I should have posted a link. :-)
I ended up having a walk with a few off here on just a nice local walk although hot. Could have done with a nice swim in the River Derwent to cool down, but settle for a drinbk in the pub O0Hot drinbk or cold drinbk?
Hot drinbk or cold drinbk?Just a cold drink :P ;D
Just a cold drink :P ;D
Ruth, do you sometimes feel picked on ?? ::)
I have been brought up being picked on Peter - good job I have shoulders to match my aress to take it all ::) ;D ;D
Being the youngest of 6 wasn't easy and never wanted me to go anywhere with them and picked on me and teased me :(Making up for it now though...... ;D

Not sure what I'm doing this weekend but I have a little suprise apparently :-\ :) O0One of Mels' firemen?
One of Mels' firemen?
Don't be silly! :o
Or it could be that Shaun's gonna say he's finally done the Y3P TR :-\
I know what Ruths little surprise was O0
C'mon then. Spill the beans :D O0
Twas as I suspected...
C'mon then. Spill the beans :D O0
But it will be some of my 37 fells still to do. Might head up via Easdale... Open to suggestions...
Not sure what to do this weekend :-\
Oh go on, treehugger - it's cooler on the tops!Cooler in the woods too.....
Yes - it's really been cooking today.
Fortunately I put up some lovely ceiling fans in the bedrooms a few years ago. I've got them spinning at top speed :)
Do they interfere with the mirrors? ::)
Think I'm gonna have a second attempt at walking to Danes Dyke Nature Reserve from Sewerby this weekend :)Public transport?
However, I'm NOT gonna have a second attempt at parking in Brid and walking from there this time round >:(
Public transport?
I would be mate, just so long as I don't get any last minute hitches. Just say where n when.Excellent :)
Aonach Eagach is calling tomorrow for me and Graeme O0 so excited O0
Excellent :)Sunday would be great (up to now, there is still time for the phone to ring !) I prefer the hills but having only ever done them on my own, dont know how fit I am comparativly. Think I should be ok. I would drive over and stay Sat night so I can do anywhere within reason. Usually like to stay out all day so the distance varies depending upon the difficulty (up to Y3P I guess)
Do you prefer Saturday or Sunday?
Are there any fells you would like to do? I really don't mind. How hard/easy, distance?
No walking for me either. I'll be driving from London to Newcastle, going to a friends wedding and then driving back.
The wedding I'm looking forward to but not the drive particularly in this weather.
Aonach Eagach - short rope useful, not least for the unexpected downclimb at the start of the more difficult section. Warning usually given not to descend too early at the west end of the ridge down the unstable boulder field. As to a suitable walk for the heat, I would suggest a short version of the Mawddach Estuary routes - breeze off the sea and half of the circuit flat!
Cheers for the advice. I have lead groups on the A&E before and am happy that Ruth is experienced enough to cope with the down climbs probably better than I can. The conditions tomorrow are ideal. Its been dry for weeks and will remain so tomorrow. Loads of water and small light rucksacks are order of the day.
Ridge my friend - you've just got to get a car with air con.
Make sure it's an automatic.
And with cruise control you will see what used to be long arduous trips in a new light.

Well we are off for a bit of sunbathing on the A&E.
April thanks for that but my humour does eventually get the better of you.
Sparnel I would have gave the guy a hard kick up the [censored] and told him to get a move on lol
I am looking forward to this today. No doubt Ruth will be laden with pictures when we get back.

Just for the record... who's in charge of the TR?
Get him to go in a Kilt and take a camcorder :)Got a thing about men in skirts then have you Mikeyboy ;) :P ;D
Just failed Yorkshire 3 peaks on a massive scale.
:( got a visit to the doctor on monday to see how much damage I have done this time.
What have you done :-\
Walked in Borrowdale yesterday. Fell down a hole and have got a spectacular purple bruise on my thigh!!Trip report???? Gedditt? ;D ;D Sorry
Walked in Borrowdale yesterday. Fell down a hole and have got a spectacular purple bruise on my thigh!!
Being Wednesday, this is hardly 'weekend' but just about to go bag Skiddaw.A long grey day for you then!
A long grey day for you then!.
On Saturday I will no doubt be stationary on the M5 heading to Cornwall for hols.
This weekend I decided to hike the pennine way from Marsden to Stoody Pike then back again, 25 miles in total. Paying for it now since I can't bend my knees and my thighs are still aching like a b!@#h.
Just got back from walking Sharp Edge. With Chris Bonington. Is that all you are going to say?? :-\
Which was nice.
Expect he knew the best route up Foule Crag. Did he hesitate at the usual place...?
Ok, so did you walk with him by accident or design?
ssume you mean via the request permission for access thread? I always forget it is there. Maybe one day...
On Sunday I'm doing a "last walk before I'm back at work" walk. Yorkshire Wolds, Thixendale me thinks :) Though my OS map doesn't go that far up the country so it should be interesting ;D
Off to Dales Thursday for a coule of days walkng. The three Y3P hills over 2 days (much more civilised way of doing things IMHO) :)
the Wembley Stadium steps to the top tier, lol
Planning to go from home to Ulverston overnight on Sunday and walk the Cumbria Way starting Monday morning. Just got to decide how to get there and then how to get back from Carlisle? Car, Train, Coach or hitchhike? Decisions, Decisions!
No walk this weekend ... Going to the Findon Sheep Fayre.
goin to hayfield for a few days . sun and mon night , but seen the forecast for sun ! looks bad , but will still do a walk , got me waterproofs. still looking forward to it , love it around there ( kinder etc)
We are going camping with the kids Scout group in Essex. This weekend I will be trying to work out where we are going to clean and dry the family tent and the 2 small tents when we get home.
Weather forcast rain, torrential rain and showers :(
cannot decide................. :-\ :-\ :-\
Now I've printed my map off I'm gonna give Thixendale and Wharram Percy a go on Sunday ... in the rain probably. Can't believe how restless I've felt at not being able to get out for a bimble all week.
Knoydart then Skye followed by a couple of more weeks walking in Lewis/Harris and Torridon/Gairloch. Looks like I will need winter gear!
You know Paul, you need to get out into the fresh air more! ;D
Did Black Hill today with the Mrs, her first visit, my second.
She's already asleep and I'm absolutely knackered.
Loved it though.
A great way to finish the day!
;)

Thames Path from Pangbourne to Goring and back. An idyllic early autumn day with lots of sun, and lovely light at 4:00 onwards. Autumn light with summer warmth. There wasn't as much fallen leaf as we were expecting. We rounded it off with a pint and meal at a riverside pub. Good stuff. O0
You had light at 4?
Coledale Round tomorrow. Reckon it should be dry but windy and cold if last weekend was anything to go by!Well I'm looking at the sky over the southern lakes now, and the sun is dazzling me.. :)
Thames Path between Wallingford and Dorchester yesterday, although today's weather is much sunnier.
They should call it the 'Not So Thames Path' to be honest, given how little you see of it, at least between Pangbourne and Dorchester. Having said that, the scenery is otherwise wonderful.
I think I have walked some of the walk there from Wallingford. I seem to recall parking over a bridge in town and walking along to a riverside cafe with an outdoor clothing shop next door, then into a little village over the main road or maybe I'm mistaken.
Heading to Inverness on Sunday then starting the Great Glen Way on Monday.
Not doing much then? At a bit of a loose end? :P
Just a tiddler this Saturday - grey crag, hartsop dodd and cauldale moor. Staying over at Sykeside in Brothers Water so apologies in advance if you're drinking in the Barn End on Saturday night.(Also tagged on Thornthwaite Crag and High Street.)
Up in Sheffield this weekend so will be looking to head out to the Peaks, assuming tomorrows forecast is accurate ;D
cant see me walking anywhere this weekend, ive just come down with man flu and its a terrible forecast for my neck of the woods this weekend.Ouch!
Another section of Glyndwr Way from AbbeycwmhirA very under-recognized area, look for the opportunities to go back there and explore some more, hope you enjoy as much as I.
no walking for me this weekend, was being chased by zombies last night..such fun! family party and another charity run tomorrow. Cleaning my boots ready for next weekend. O0
ive just got home from a cracking walk on the long mynd in shropshire, lovely part of the country but way to many mountain bikers for my liking. is the word hello in there volcabulary?
Peak District both Saturday and Sunday (not surprising as I live there). Saturday evening I'll be on Big Moor running a night navigation course. Sunday I'm leading am 11 mile walk on Bleaklow. Hope the weather is kind!im on the peaks this weekend, might catch you there, im doing kinder scout tomorrow. meant to be tricky so ive been told. cant wait :)
Probably a local walk for me on Sunday. Saving my petrol pennies for the Penyghent meet O0
Give us a shout if you want company Mel O0
Might well just do that Ruth. The weather forecast's looking alright for Sunday O0
Bah! This has all the makings of a clique!! >:(
:2funny:
Sounds like you fancy being the meat in the sandwich there Peter :)
(I can do you a good line in earplugs if so)
ANDREW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o and you being a Christian too..............then again, "Love thy neighbour"...............didn't think it meant it like that though.
Sounds like you fancy being the meat in the sandwich there Peter :)
(I can do you a good line in earplugs if so)
Thanks Andy. It's reckoning storm force today- will see what it updates with for tomorrow later.
I try not to take too many risks. So you won't have me up Sharp Edge in wet or wind. And I will turn back if I'm not happy with my ability to cope with conditions.
If we feel it's too challenging tomorrow can always do a low level walk. I quite fancy exploring Langstrath.
You got any plans?
ANDREW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o and you being a Christian too..............then again, "Love thy neighbour"...............didn't think it meant it like that though.
Bah! This has all the makings of a clique!! >:(:P

Sadly, no can do... ::)
I thought the offer of earplugs if out with those two extremely quiet and reserved ladies was an extremely Christian act.
I'll take your word for that on the grounds that your mind obviously understands the depths of Wakey Boys depravity better than mine does :angel:Who said owt about depravity? :-\
Just seen your post Andy. Shame abut the lack of walking. You know the saying: all work and no play.... However needs must, I expect. Hope you can escape soon.
Might well just do that Ruth. The weather forecast's looking alright for Sunday O0
last weekend i climbed waun fach in the black mountain range, this weekend i'm attempting its neighbour pen y gader fawr. hopefully i wont fall down this one.
it is awesome and luckily for me its on my doorstep. love the black mountains and the beacons :D
Much better walks in the Black Mountains than Waun Fach IMHO. It's very boggy on Waun Fach, some good views though but the summit itself is really not much to look at. Y Grib leading to or from it is a good walk O0
they're on my list now! O0
This weekend I'm doing Craig Y Cilau on Mynydd Llangatwg and the Eglwys Faen cave 8)
Lol it's a Welsh thing ;D
looks like you just pressed aload of random keys on your keyboard :D :D

Looking forward to it Wayne, worked out a route of about 8 miles and taking the headtorch O0
That's a very large and impressive cave, a great area for exploring. O0
Living down sarf here I am definitely feeling a twinge of envy for everyone on here who lives closer to more challenging and interesting walking country.
I live with a three thousand foot mountain across from my front door and one the same at my back door.
Strange as it may seem, I like walking through green fields and meadows.
Going to to do a bit of the West Highland Way tomorrow (Sunday).
Why not pick a weekend in Spring and suggest it as a meet?
....... can't believe how nice and warm it was today!
Me neither! Did another 10 miler today and was just too hot at times!
What a difference a day makes :D

........ Tittesworth Reservoir followed by a beer and some grub in The Lazy Trout afterwards.
I think I wil stay in this weekend.
The weather is not very nice at all, and I don't really want to catch a cold just before Christmas.
Hopefully, we will have better days.

A low level walk for us this Saturday, starting from Grassington following the River Wharfe up through Strid Wood and back again. Beautiful part of the world with good paths after all the wet weather recently.
Ive done this walk along the Dales way to Bolton Abbey and back and it is very scenic, enjoy yourself :)
Mynydd Bach Trecastle on Sunday. Roman camp, moorland, forest tracks and largely devoid of humans, tidy as we say in Wales O0
High Phil hope you and Wayne have a good day think I,m going up conwy mountain with family nice walk but nothing like what your doing all the best mark. Thanks Mark, was hoping for some snow and a chance to get the spikes on, plenty at height earlier in the week when I passed by Storey Arms but plenty of rain since then so not sure now, have a good one with the family O0
Have fun guys. I started my Ridgeway walk today ... finish on Thursday :-)

Grisedale Pike on Sunday :o
Update - I walked from New Brighton to West Kirkby (9.5 miles according to GPS) with the wind in my face all the way, it actually felt like 20 miles the wind was impossible ::)
A great route on the bike
Yes there were plenty out today O0 it's basically a long flat path and not too crowded during the week.
well im just about to set off on my record breaking walk of 30 miles along the grand union canal. im hoping to complete the walk in just over 10 hours.
ive never covered this sort of distance before so wish me luck. O0
Good luck. I'm also canal walking today - the Bridgewater from south Manchester to Lymm and back via Dunham Massey park. There are a few decent pubs I'll be passing ... O0
Dales tomorrow :)
Whernside, Ingleborough, Simon Fell and Park Fell :)
First decent bit of hill work this year, so should be half dead by Monday morning ;D
Well i achieved my aim yesterday and smashed the 30 mile barrier. Walked 31.2 mile in total. Took me 10 hours, a little sore now but glad i did it.

I've been to Dalby forrest once. I seem to remember it costing about £7 for a car to park in it :oPark in North York moors car park at Saltersgate (hole of Horcum) and walk in for top section Dixons hollow etc or on roadside outside Pexton moor and walk in for the visitors centre or fox and rabbit roadside and walk in or from Thornton le dale
Some nice walks in there though O0
Did West Kirby to Neston yesterday along the Wirral Way with a little detour through Parkgate (9 miles)
Ice cream? ;)
Me and the Small climbed Helm Crag in Grasmere yesterday, cracking day in the lakes!! :DLucky you. Did the pair of you go all the way to the top of the howitzer?
Lucky you. Did the pair of you go all the way to the top of the howitzer? No unfortunately not, we sat a top the Lion's head but we only got to glance at the Howitzer before we had to head back to the car park - knew I should have put another quid in... :-\
This Sunday's bimble is likely to be a local one. Stoodley Pike is a contender. There's a nice 6 mile hike from Hebden Bridge station. Or maybe the Dales. I've had my eye on Grimwith Reservoir for a while and you can get to Trollers Gill easily from there too.... hmmm!!
It is a nice walk, but I would suggest going UP Troller's Gill. I think your boy would find that 'magical'.

Not sure where or what to walk on Sunday :-\ Anyone got any ideas or want someone to walk with 8) O0
Hi Ruth I will be walking around Snowdonia on Sunday you are more than welcome to join me but it is a long way for you to travelYeah its a bit too far just for a day and I'm at work on the Saturday morning otherwise I'd have done a wekend there. Another time though Mark O0
you ever walked the mosaic trail over dallowgill Moore? That's your neck of the woods I think ?Never heard of it :-\ Might have to google it :)

Going to do the Mosaic Trail walk either tomorrow or Saturday if anyone else fancies it O0
Oh bugga :( I'm working tomorrow and have family visiting on Saturday otherwise I'd have been up for that (spotted GD's post about it before and it's in my ever-growing "to do" pile) :( Hope you get some takers and have a good walk O0
No walking this weekdbd but travel up on Sunday to start the Dales Way on Mon, hoping the weather is kind to us!
I was watching an aeticle on the news this morning about the Settle/Carlisle line which was coming from Dent and it did look good weatherwise.
The sun is out today, burning me right now (6.30pm) :)
looking forward to my first mountain climb at pen y fan as part of my training for my 3 peaks challenge in september.Enjoy it :)
You can't go wrong on the path you are taking although Pont Ar Daf is easier. Have a great day O0still time to change my mind and take them up on the north route ;D
You could do the circular route from the reservoir and include corn du, pen y fan and fan y big.normally i would but want to keep it simple for pen y fan as taking them to hay bluff in the afternoon. don't want to wear em out do i ;D
still time to change my mind and take them up on the north route ;DCwmgwdi is my favourite way to Pen Y Fan, now you're talking O0
Never done Hay Bluff before, will have to look it up on Trailzilla, very rarely go to South Wales when the bigger mountains are calling in North Wales (Hill snob am I)It's not all about the size (no pun intended)
Cwmgwdi is my favourite way to Pen Y Fan, now you're talking O0
O0
Best way up Phil O0 .
Two days in the Lakes for me and Small. Some more Wainwrights to add to our ever expanding list...! :DOh lucky you, where are you planning to go?
hay bluff is one of my faves O0 love the cats back walk.
Oh lucky you, where are you planning to go?
Local walk again for me ::) Will probably try out my 5 month old sons new carrier and if its not too sunny, talk him for a little walk up cheddar and onto the mendips :)Happy days.
Happy days.
When my son was small he liked the carrier but if he was awake he used to spend his time hitting me on the head and then he'd go to sleep and slump down so we had to tie him in with spare boot laces.
Yeah should be fun, hes loves getting out and about. Crys the house down mostly, but the motion from being out and going for a walk keeps him content and chilled thankfully.
Isn't it amazing how you put them into a car or a carrier and they go to sleep?
Portugal :-)
Can we car share? Do I need my own tent?? 8)
Decided to park at Ravenscar then walk along the Cleveland way to Whitby via Robin Hoods Bay then back after fish n chips in Whitby O0
well yesterday we climbed pen y fan and hay bluff in the brecon beacons, we all had a great day and im sure i can compleat my 3 peaks challenge now.it was a pleasure to meet you and the girls zena, hope your legs are not too sore today, we actually walk 16 miles so well done to you all, im sure you will have no problems fitness wise on completing the 3 peaks O0
would like to say a massive thank you to rebecca for leading us on the walk and giving us much needed advice. we could not have done it without you. thank you so much.
Not really a weekend, but since my weekday are more or less my weekends at the moment, I'll be up Kinder via Crowden tomorrow. Probably doing a circular around the ridge and then down via Ringing Roger.
The wife and I and Pooch are going to drive over to Keswick on Friday, the walk I haven't decided on, and Saturday I'm thinking about Reeth and Fremmington Edge.
Me and work friends have decided to go to malvern hills on saturday and we can get a train direct from birmingham. We have not visited before so advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you.good choice zena O0 iv'e been a couple of times and theres some lovely walks and fantastic views. you may even make out hay bluff we climbed if visibility is clear. i would have joined you on this one but i already have a walked planned for saturday. shame because i have an OS 190 map for the area that would have been ideal for you to practise your navigation skills with.
Hi Ridge (not route!!). The pain starts lower back and is traveling down the back of my leg and after a bit of googling it does seem as if it might be sciatica. Never had anything like it before -don't usually have any trouble.
April those herniated discs don't sound pleasant. Do they get in the way of walking?
Almost in Penrith hope I can hobble off the train! Maybe I'll be cured! And really hope I get some walking in....
April those herniated discs don't sound pleasant. Do they get in the way of walking?
Anyway I can now reveal that however I sat on the train seems to have eased things. Still tender in the lower back and down the leg, but the earlier pain has remitted. Fingers crossed I have been spared compared to you Peter.
Phew! Perhaps I can get planning again!
Wherever it's raining ;D
17miles Saturday, Roaches and Luds Church...boy can I feel it today ;DI've done that, albeit shorter route, perhaps 11miles. Its a belter, isnt it?
I've done that, albeit shorter route, perhaps 11miles. Its a belter, isnt it?Was a good one :)
Week day walks for me at the moment but my daughter will be camping with Scouts and they are doing their cooking over open fires.
She may be very hungry, very damp and very muddy when she gets back as it is supposed to be pouring down all weekend.
Both my kids have got there camping genes from me not their Mum so she is looking forward to it.
That's the way it should be, it's character building... ;D
Know what you mean about the carneddau but pointless in this weather
Off to the Ogwen valley tomorrow with a view to a walk involving Tryfan and Glyderau Fach/Fawr on Monday. Forecast for Monday has looked okay up to now, can't wait for my first time on Tryfan. Anyone in the area would be welcome to join.
Wasn't going to walk today but woke up and the sun was shining so did a local walk around Southwell, Halam and Edingley in Notts.Quick....................leg it! ;D
Only got caught in one shower and we went into a church for cover but then the alarms went off and we didn't know whether to stay or go,
would the police turn up or some key holder and would our ruck sacks and us be stripped searched for religious artifacts? :-\
Week day walks for me at the moment but my daughter will be camping with Scouts and they are doing their cooking over open fires.Almost as predicted my daughter has returned slightly damp, very muddy and very happy. That's my girl!

I'm walking The Broomway in Essex on Sunday :) I hope I survive to tell you alll what it was like :-\
It would appear to me that low water is about 10am and they are spring tides. Are you starting the walk around 5.30/6am?
Info
http://www.broomway.org.uk/ (http://www.broomway.org.uk/)
Tides (add 1hr as we are on summer time)

Always wanted to walk the Broomway, will do one day.
Hi Dellwalker how are you?
The walk is organised by Wildlife Trips Brian Dawson. Email
Just in case you ever do decide to go on it.
We are picking up the coach at 8.30am and meeting at Wakering Stairs then it's a 3mile walk in welling tons to Asplins Head, then walk across the Island to Churchend approx 2miles. it's MOD land so you can only go there with their permission.
Donna, will you be packing an miniture foldaway inflatable raft? just in case the tide is early or late ;)
Now there's an idea O0
Saturday is of course the 31st!
Shorts on and off to the Dales also on a 17 miler O0
See you there Peter. Will you be in your shorts?stop perving! ;D ;D
Last time you were behind me, there was a lot of puffing and panting, mind you it was a ruddy steep hill! ;D
Not quite the weekend, but heading down to Ilkley to start the Dales Way on Wednesday.
Any comments/recommendations, B&Bs, pubs, etc welcome. Might meet some forum members........
Spending Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Lakes. First visit since the start of the C2C in April. :)
If the weather's good we'll do Helvellyn from Patterdale on the Friday, if it's poor we'll hope Saturday is better and do it then.
Looking ok for Friday at the moment, planning on Seat Sandal and Stone Arthur via Fairfield myself and hoping for a good view from Fairfield as the cloud was in last month when i was last on it. :)
Same as ;D
If we're up there we'll wave :)

The day of those two that we don't go up Helvellyn hasn't really been decided on. We're camping in Borrowdale so perhaps up past Eagle Crag, round to Ullscarf and along that ridge.
I've got a plan for Sunday that starts by Crummock Water, goes up Rannerdale Knotts then on to Crag Hill and Sail via Whiteless Edge. When I get to Sail, depending on the weather, the time etc., I'll decide where to go from there.
I've plotted one route that goes: Rannerdale Knotts, Whiteless Pike, Wandope, Crag Hill, Sail, Ard Crags, Knott Rigg, Newlands Hause, Robinson, Hindscarth, Dale Head, High Spy, Maiden Moor and Catbells.
It's only 13.9 miles but does involve the best part of 2000m of ascent. The good thing is that the other half is not coming with me - she's going to have a day reading and pottering about - so I have car support - I can bail out at various places along that route and get picked up. O0
Aye, but half of the vertical is downhill. ;)
ONLY 13.9 miles? But most of it is vertical!! I agree with Sarah, you must be fit O0
Percy, I hope you get the weather. For your Borrowdale day, Eagle Crag is a real treat and a delightful climb. You can go on to Sergeant's a Crag but tbh I wouldn't recommend going all the way to Ullscarf. It is a never ending trudge with little reward. You could consider taking in High Raise and then descending via Greenup Gill, or descend via delightful Langstrath. You're right about Ullscarf not being particularly inspiring (from what I've read and seen as I've never been up there) but those Central Fells aren't going to complete themselves unfortunately.
Leaving for the Lakes tomorrow. Saturday is the 10 in 10 (http://www.10in10.org.uk/). Nervous, but looking forward to it.
Doing 12 mile sweep on the Heart Research UK's Valleys walk (part of their Yorkshire 3 Peaks Event) then walking the Y3P overnight
\
When are you doing the Valleys walk?
How many times have you done the Y3P's now Pete?
Good luck with the fundraising walk. O0
You're right about Ullscarf not being particularly inspiring (from what I've read and seen as I've never been up there) but those Central Fells aren't going to complete themselves unfortunately.
Indeed Percy. I almost wrote something about ticking it off being the only reason to venture there. To prepare you, it's a longish pathless walk down as well, then eventually you reach the wall and very steep stepped path down- a real sting in the tail. Luckily the Langstrath Inn is there to aid recovery! Here's a link to my brief TR and photos http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=24578.0 (http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=24578.0)
Thanks for the link to the TR, Sarah. Some nice photos there. From the one where you can see both Greenup and Langstrath I can tell you walked a fair distance north of Ullscarf's summit. Did you drop down into the valley using the footpath that is marked on OS maps? It joins the Cumbria Way near Stonethwaite Bridge and skirts Dock Tarn heading in the other direction. It's the one marked here (http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=326475&y=513702&z=115&sv=326475,513702&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=731&ax=326475&ay=513702&lm=0)
Enjoy the wonderful Peaks Ridge. I'll be there this weekend hoping to squeeze in a 'fast' walk ... on a time limit! :)Thanks MMK, anything I know about navigation was learnt in the mist and mud on the top of Kinder in my youth.
Mickle Fell for me (highest hill in Yorkshire - gwan, argue with me!)
And then, on Sunday, a bit of coastal Wales between Harlech and Barmouth, hopefully followed by a backpack with some pals over Cadair Idris
Followed by a couple of days snoozing in a warm tent...
Was you on Whernside at all this week Mike?
a weekend off for me...
Will be with you in spirit Phil, done most of that walk when I stayed in Aber village one year and it's a cracker. Daughters 12th birthday on Saturday then to Surbiton on Sunday to see my son's new flat ... no walking for me :(I've gone up that way from Llanfrynach before but looking forward to this way, I'll post a few pics Jon O0
Anybody done the Rylstone ridge, near Skipton? I still aint got round to it..................
And I still aint done Rylstone edge!
Yep. :)
Though the floor show when I did it caused me to not notice the walk a lot.
The walk leaders wife AND girlfriend turned up :-X
You know what its like when you know the proverbial is going to hit the fan and you are waiting.. don't want to miss it.. ;D
Oh.. and I think it was misty too.. :-\
;D Schadenfreude I know, but we should organize some of that for a forum meet. Do we know anyone here who's 'playing away' ? Could be a 'wild' camping weekend in more ways than one :D

This weekend I mostly will be walking in the L...L....L.....LAAAAAAAAKKKKKEEEEEEE DISTRIIIIIIIIIIICT :D
Wahooooooooooo :) :) :) :) :) :) :D :D :D :D :D :D :D O0 O0 O0 O0
... Well actually, technically, I'll be walking on the Monday, if I'm honest ;D
Very nice :) What you up to?
I am going to use reverse psychology on myself by declaring that I am not going walking anywhere...hopefully this should spur me on to going for a walk shhh don't let me know what I am doing :)

Tomorrow I will be wandering round a wood in Hertfordshire planning a route that I will be taking a troop of Scouts on in the dark next weekend.I'm so glad I checked this route today. What looked on the map like a path through the wood leading to a road was a path through the wood leading to a fence through which you could almost see the road but had no way of getting to it.
Tomorrow I will be wandering round a wood in Hertfordshire planning a route that I will be taking a troop of Scouts on in the dark next weekend.
Having checked out the route last weekend, tonight I will be leading 80 (yes eighty!) Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and their parents on a night hike.

Don't say that!
We will watch the BBC news with interest in the morning... "Major search under way" ;)
Off to Yr Elen tomorrow. Should be a long day on my own.
Ridge good luck with the night walk. Tonight I walked to the pub and back. But on Sunday, I hope to be heading to Haweswater so that the other half can get closer to completing his Wainwright round. Thanks Sarah, it went very well. I'd been really careful when I walked it in the day to make sure I would be able to easily recognise any tricky bits and it went like a dream, I never even had to get the map out. You would have thought we were going to the summit of Everest and back from the way some of them moaned, glad my kids aren't like that.
Don't say that!
The reason I've been asked to lead it is because a few years ago when we all went on a night walk the then Scout leader clearly didn't know where he was and was walking faster and faster until eventually I took the map off him to work out where we were.
So no pressure to not get lost tonight.
There won't be a massive amount of walking for us but should have a good weekend. I'm taking the boys to Southport for the airshow. So anyone walking around that area you might spot some.
I was going to say 'Me too!' Rhino, but actually it's the far eastern fells for me.
Got any definite plans?
Moel siabod today it was stunning I will try and put some pics upI went up Siabod a week last Thursday for the first time, some great views up there and considering the fine weather we had today i bet you were spoilt aswell look forward to seeing the photos
The lakes the far eastern area
April, I've tried to look at avoidingaprilandbeefy.com a number of times and it says page not available? Any ideas why?
Best wishes.
You forgot to check avoidingaprilandbeefy.com didn't you Rhino ;D We are over in that area too on Saturday so we might see you :)

;D i did check the site a while back and wondered if you had bought the url and was setting it up ;D
Planning on doing the Hagg Gill Round a nice 11 Miler and 6 more Wainwrights for me and hoping the Sallows is not as bad as people say :)
Watch out as well Ive heard someone called Karl has been stalking walkers in and around the lakes ;D
I'm off for a wander just across the border in Cheshire, although some of the walk is in Derbyshire :D
I'll be at Shining Tor at some point.... and then watching the climbers at Windgather Rocks while eating lunch!
Might get the odd bit of snow today too 8)
Blimey Sunnydale what a day, glad everyone's ok O0
What a day!! :o Blizzard conditions on the way to Pym Chair Car Park this morning, snow covered narrow lanes where my car was slipping all over the place, two separate car crashes, one of which involved today's walk leader and the other involved a couple who were also due to attend the walk! Nobody was hurt, thank god. The walk leaders car was pulled free from a grassy bank by a kind farmer with a tractor, where it was balancing at a precarious angle on two wheels, while the other car was towed away by a recovery van! Frozen stiff due to hanging about waiting for help....but worst of all, no flippin' walk!!! lol Managed to get home in one piece and ended up eating lunch at home. Then went for a local wander to calm my nerves! :D
.......The walk leaders car was pulled free from a grassy bank by a kind farmer with a tractor, where it was balancing at a precarious angle on two wheels.......
Well we should definitly be able to see each other if there isnt too much clag, the weathers not looking as good as its been :) If we bump in to one another one or both of us are crap navigators ;D

The scary part is that my car is the same as this and it could easily have been me up the bank! Three of us made it to Pym car park - just - and had no idea, to begin with, that our friend had missed the turning (due to terrible visibility) and was just yards down the road in need of help! :o
(photo taken by another group member)
Congratulations to him, I hope you have a stunning day for it.
Look out for the special breed sheep - Lleyn peninsula.
Off to Fleetwith Pike so that hubby can complete his Wainwright round. Easy route from Honister as he hasn't been well. The important thing is that the celebratory tipple is already in the hip flask!
Thanks Slogger. The tipple (damson gin) was much needed as it was very cold and blowy on the summit. I have rarely downed two shots so quickly!!
I did Fleetwick Pike last Saturday in lovely weather, not a difficult one for your last Wainwright O0
What's his plan now?
Glyders glyders glyders glydersMe too ;D
I'm at a wedding on saturday, I might have a go at Sgwd yr Eira waterfalls on sunday if I'm up to it, depends how I feel, (health issues not drunk). If you do, the beef and ale homemade pie in the Angel Pontneddfechan is delicious for an after walk meal O0
Camping in Edale so may have a little stroll up KinderI may pass you somewhere along the way. Heading for Kinder either from Edale or Hayfield.
I'll be doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks on Saturday (excited), then on Sunday...I'll be ringing everyone I know to tell them that I did the Yorkshire Three Peaks on Saturday :)
Leading this 20 miler - it's called 'Steven's Two Loops' - should be able to see why ;)
My walking may well be around Ikea... :(
Did another variation of the waterfalls walk today around Ystradfellte. Used a "closed" cliff path above the Mellte, narrow, slippy and with sheer drops, great fun.
I'll be recceing the walk that is planned for Saturday on the Wales meet on Saturday so should be a good day if the weather stays goodwhat's the walk Mark? I'd like to plot it on map and GPS O0
Up the east ridge of pen yr ole wen carnedd daffydd then Llewellyn then towards pen helgi du and back down it's a good day out Phil and you get to stay on high ground for most of the dayMap out as we speak😀😀 Christine and I are staying on after Sunday until Wednesday and planning to do Snowdon via Rhyd Ddu, South Ridge, Bwlch Main then Rhyd Ddu back down.
That's a lovely way up snowdon you'll enjoy it just be prepared for the masses at the summitYeah prepared for that Mark but don't intend to linger, it's the walk there and back I'm looking forward to, hopefully much less busy than anything from PYP
I'm off to that Yorkshire to do the Three Peaks again, this time the clockwise route. :D

Replying to myself - bad form, but hey ho... :D
Heading somewhere slightly different tomorrow - the Howgills.
We merrily drive past them whenever we head north and now that we have both done our 214, we should really look at pastures new - although we do seem to have strayed second rounds of wainwrights somehow...
Walking and camping in Edale this weekend. Hiking onto Kinder Scout and Kinder Downfall and then doing a short walk up to Mam Tor.
Weather is not too bad; cloudy and light rain, could be worse :)
Have a nice walk Mel O0 its the lakes North Western area for me and Mrs R tomorrow :)

Hi Luke thanks mate, i am walking with my mate Chris who has had to pull out of 3 walks this year for one reason or another, he cant wait for Saturday :)
Ive been following the forecast all week and looking at Snowdonia it is getting more than the lakes but not as much as Scotland ;D I think the lakes is going to get a light dusting at best so nothing to worry about. Enjoy you day out and stay safe mate :)
Nice n easy, then straight to the pub!!! ;D ;D ;D
I think we are all guaranteed some of the white stuff but i don't think its crampon and ice axe time just yet but i will be taking the micro spikes and a walking pole just in case have a good time both of you
Packed the microspikes last night as well O0 great minds and all that 8) just a shame we dont have one ;D
I think we are all guaranteed some of the white stuff but i don't think its crampon and ice axe time just yet but i will be taking the micro spikes and a walking pole just in case have a good time both of you
I think (I hope) it was me! If you're doing the full circuit then I expect there'll be many boggy areas of waterlogged peat due to all the recent rain. It was quite dry when I did it.
Some good looking gales forecast for tomorrow too. I'll be up the beacons somewhere O0Same hear. Undecided were yet. But packs ready and I've told (asked) the other half to make a stew ready fir when I get home :)
I think the lakes is going to get a light dusting at best so nothing to worry about.
Yep fair play to you Dave you were right O0
I was lucky Snowdonia got a good coating i was even caught in a blizzard for nearly 3hrs but it was blue sky for most of the morning til dinnertime but that wind was strong and cold forecast said -16 windchill certainly felt like it a cracking day loved it hope everyone else had a good one
We had very little wind in the Lakes Luke. Weather was spot on, with lots of sunshine, simply beautiful. O0
Hope you had a good walk mate i know i did and it was great to be out with nice blue sky allbeit a bit cold at the start of the day
Did you get a shot of Blencathra at all? i saw it on the drive up and it looked like it got a good covering :)
I've studied April's photo very carefully and concluded that its SNOW.. course I've been wrong before... :-\
Thanks Dave and well done getting to 213 enjoy your last one which I bet is in a week or two O0
Well done Dave on 213 and great photos jontea
Not sure if it's going to be this weekend but I'm planning my next walk to be the Mosedale Horseshoe including Kirk Fell. Gonna be a long day though as it's a 4 and a half hour drive to Wasdale Head. A 4am set off time, I should think.
I am feeling an Irresistible urge pulling me towards Helvellyn by way of Striding edge :smitten:
Sounds good Dave i know you will have fun up there i am heading up Crib Lem and over the Carneddau to either come down by Aber or Llanfairechen a nice scramble and we have lots of lovely snow to make it more fun!!
I cant wait Luke and even though it may be a bit claggy its the buzz of Striding and Swirral i am really going for, ive seen the view from Helvellyn a few times and its not going anywhere but the snow wont be with us for long O0 I know your the same so stay safe and enjoy your day out as well and i look forward to your pictures and TR mate :)
You're a brave man, Rhino! I don't really have the skills for snow (nor the equipment) but one day maybe.
We've just been up Askham Fell and looked down on Ullswater - Helvellyn summit was in cloud but I know the snow was waiting for you!!
Btw / there were some Lakeland Walkers in the post walk pub - I looked for the rest of the Little Langdale walk, but couldn't see it :(
Have a fab walk!
Thanks Dave and you stay safe and have a good time aswell, i still have a TR to do from Wednesday's trip up Snowdon and Lliwedd to do first but i will get tomorrows TR up after that and expect nothing less than a top drawer TR as always from yourself
I was hoping to do the whole thing including the direct route up Kirk fell and yewbarrow. Depends if my legs last that long, I'll have my knee supports handy though. If anyone wants to join me then feel free although it will probably be a week day. This was for me, one of the best days in the mountains I've had.
Funnily enough I is planning a church fenton circuit on sunday! How could I recognise you ?
Wear a pink carnation ;DI always do ;D
How could I recognise you ?Unless u are a very helpful farmer at Paradise Farm, or the guy with 2 dogs, who I spoke to, then we didn't meet!
We could pass on a track and never realise (I can't announce myself as Innominate to everyone I see ;D )
Unless u are a very helpful farmer at Paradise Farm, or the guy with 2 dogs, who I spoke to, then we didn't meet!
I wont be doing that walk again. Will do a TR under rest of England in a few days, if I can be arsed.
Unless u are a very helpful farmer at Paradise Farm, or the guy with 2 dogs, who I spoke to, then we didn't meet!In the end Sunday was such a nice day we legged it to Filey for a walk down towards Flamborough Head.

Snowdonia O0
This weekend I'll be heading to Scotland to walk between Inverness and Glasgow, by the West Highland and Great Glen Ways O0
Off to Staveley in Cumbria with the Ramblers on Sunday, I think it's the one near Keswick but really don't know through which ten muddy fields we'll be walking.
Don't forget the mega detour between Ambleside and Keswick..
This weekend I'll be heading to Scotland to walk between Inverness and Glasgow, by the West Highland and Great Glen Ways O0I'm wild camping the west highland way starting tomorrow. Can't wait
Off to Staveley in Cumbria with the Ramblers on Sunday, I think it's the one near Keswick but really don't know through which ten muddy fields we'll be walking.Just off the top of my head I can think of three; one between Penrith & Ullswater, one near Kendal (where Hawkshead have their brewery) and the other down towards Newby Bridge. I would quite happily live in either of them.
Halifax town :D i am being taken out by friends and family for my Birthday on a session tomorrow O0 i am in training now on the Stella and Holsten Pills >:D always find having a session the day before increases the stamina and resistance to the effect of alcohol the next day 8)
I hope that is not your training for the Snowdon horseshoe!! Happy Birthday Dave 21 again!
No Luke I drop to Tetleys if iam out scrambling.
35 mate started counting backwards at 40 ;D
btw are you sure Tetley's is the best choice for Scrambling? I expect if you put a post in the Gear section you'd get a few comment s ;-)
Day 3 of the West Highland Way today, from Tyndrum to the infamous Drivers Inn at Inverarnon.
Only 12 miles as the previous day I was going to do 21 miles from Kinlichleven to Bridge of Orchy but when I got there I realised the train to Tyndrum was over 3 hours away so I decided to walk instead, get there quicker and save the money plus have an easier day today and set off later in the day.
Another plus is that today's weather forecast isn't brilliant whereas yesterdays was fantastic O0
Surely not Dave? Get on the sleeper train and get yourself up to the Highlands here. I'll pick you up at Bridge of Orchy and we'll have a day on the snowy Munros! A dram or two in the Inveroran Hotel and you can catch the nine o' clock sleeper back south................. ::)
I think we past each other. Was you wearing a montane waterproof (blue) I was about 4 miles from tyndrum.
Not sure what day that would have been but I would have left Tyndrum on Monday morning in the rain, wearing a red Waterproof. I was surprised by the number of people I passed, especially today on my last day.Yes it was you I remember it definitely a montane top and could of actually was red. I was walking from Inverarnan to invoronan. I was not wearing Waterproofs but it was hammering down. Finished the way today and on the coach home. Had snow the last 2 days so was happy.
I hope you got good views on your last couple of days up the snowy parts :-)

Just make a rubbish job of it, then she won't ask you again ;)
The sun is shining, the air is crisp, I have housework to do .....
.... sooooo I'm off to Flamborough for a walk along the cliff tops O0
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we should be heading off to the northern lakes to take in Skiddaw via the Ullock Pike ridge - I've been looking forward to this one for ages O0 .

Where you off to? North, south, mid or the bandit country that is west Wales ;D
;D bandit country ;DSome nice coastal walking either way from Saundersfoot. We did part of it from Amroth to Tenby a few years ago, also bits here and there further west. Nice short walk from Saundersfoot, through the tunnel to Wisemans Bridge then up through Pleasant Valley to Stepaside O0
Staying at Saundersfoot and planning on some gorgeous coastal walking. I want to visit Skoma Island but not sure the boats will be going there this time of year, really want to see the Puffins :)

Have had Achilles trouble myself its a real pain just drags on but misery likes company i will be resting a sprained ankle for the next few days also may we both have a speedy recoveryWelcome to my world guys :)
On Monday I hope to do Blencathra via Halls fell ridge in cloudy and rainy weather.
Have fun but careful if it's wet and slippy mate. O0
I'd be tempted to drive up and join you but had enough of the rain (posting from a wet and windy Sheffield) for this month :-[ ;D
Could always sneek it in a fortnight Friday after Jacks rake ;D
Yeah, pretty wet in the Lakes.
Yesterday was glorious so we headed to Gowbarrow to open the season and test the grand-dog amongst the sheep. (He came back every time - phew!). The car park was rammed tho and never seen quite so many folk there.
Today has involved Rheged (Harris Tweed photography exhibition) - not bad and out of the rain. And pub later.
I'm up here for the week so I'm hoping the weather picks up so I can get a few miles under my boots.
I'm up here for the week so I'm hoping the weather picks up so I can get a few miles under my boots. We were up yesterday and based ourselves at the far end of Tilberthwaite and managed reasonable weather for a circular walk over to Little Langdale and back via Hodge Close. Only short but we didn't have that much time, having spent the earlier part of the day in Kendal.
I'm thinking of the Howgills and Bowderdale - although I might not wait till the weekend. The forecast looks favourable for tomorrow and I have got the day off... :)
One of my favourites, here's the trace if you want it http://www.haroldstreet.org.uk/routes/download/?walk=1606
9 days - Very nice. O0The forecast for next week is brilliant. For the Lakes. It's forecast to rain every day but only lightly. O0
Reckon you might just see some sunshine if you're up there that long ;D
forecast to rain every day but only lightly. O0
Wouldn't mind seeing something from a summit for a change come next weekend ;D
if I can't see'em I don't go
The Lakes (again).
Jacks Rake tomorrow.
Excited :D
Have a good time dom don't forget to take some photos as you know i am also guilty of enjoying myself so much i forget to take a few snaps
Yeah Dom take some photos :)
No rain tomorrow :o ??? ;D so camera will defo be coming out (especially since it'll probably be tucked away again come Saturday ::) ;D . O0 Though, i might leave Dave to take the action shots on Jakes Rake depending on how scary it is lol.
Now you have gone and done it havent you with your rain jinx ;D the only trouble with Jacks Rake is it isnt long enough :) scary stood on the top though for your picture with a big drop behind you :o
Just back from a short break in kielder forest. After reading a thread on here about the lack of forests a year or so ago, I've been meaning to get there. And I'll certainly be heading back. Just my thing really. Forest and reservoir ;0) Had a wonder out at night and just sat and listened to the place. Cracking campsite too. Was a bit sludgey but that can't be helped.
Kielder village campsite. Very nice site. Woodland walks straight from the tent, or pod as it was on this occasion. You know it?
Nope but am always on the lookout for good campsites, the rates look quite good too.
Scotland with Dom yeahhh
Busting me cherry at last in the mountains of bonnie Scotland.
What are you two climbing ? :)
We have done Aonach Eagach today which was absolutely fantastic and in glorious weather.Fantastic lads well done on the A.E hope you have a good day on the Ben tomorrow O0

Off to do the Snowdon horseshoe tomorrow as we have some bonus winter conditions and i had put away the winter gear didn't expect to be breaking it out again so soon
Get it while its still there Luke, went up from Beddgelert to Capel today Lots at 2500 plus .But seemed to be thinning out.I saw a photo on ground conditions uk the snow was quite deep at bwlch moch and quite a lot on the lakes helped make my mind up to where to go and thanks welshwiz
Probably lots in the bits hidden from road view O0 Good luck.
Have a good one mate and bring back some good pictures O0
Local for me about 15 miles with Handsome Jack i think :)
Decided in the end on Wildboar Clough, Bleaklow Head, then the Crowden Horseshoe. Underestimated how hot it was going to be and didn't take enough water. I have a bright red neck and a touch of sunstroke. Seemed to take an eternity to get to the Black Hill trig point and back again. I'll post a trip report soon.crikey sunstroke sounds serious!!! :o
I was planning to walk but my car has let me down. Can't get it repaired until Tuesday. [censored]*r!
I'm off to the pub this weekend, well Saturday anyway. Our local UKIP drinker will be holding court, anti EU, anti everyone who's not like him, white Anglo Saxon protestant says he and so on. Couldn't bear to leave, love him, he's just too entertaining!
I'm walking up Snowdon this weekend. Up the Miners paths and down the Llanberis path.
Hopefully gonna be getting up Ingleborough tomorrow afternoon O0You might see the sea from the top.
Hopefully gonna be getting up Ingleborough tomorrow afternoon O0
I'll be in hospital sick visiting but my daughter is off on her DofE camping trip. If anyone sees 6 teenage boys being told exactly what to do by the only girl in the group then that will be them.Had a text from my daughter to say that they had a great days walking and, while it isn't a competition to see who gets their tent up first, she was sat in the doorway of hers shouting kind words of advice and encouragement to the boys who were trying to get theirs pitched.
....she was sat in the doorway of hers shouting kind words of advice and encouragement to the boys who were trying to get theirs pitched.
The boys have known her long enough to not be surprised.
;D And that's exactly as it should be Ridge O0 :D
Round Newcastle :D at the Magic rugby league weekend so more of a boozy walk from the bar to my seat repeated constantly at St James Park ;DYou could class that as circuit training Dave a squat followed by a walk then a bicep curl followed by another squat then repeated bicep curls!!! Have a good time mate i am off to a bodybuilding competition with my bro i am his backstage assistant
Nice one Luke, circuit training ;DI am not sure if i mentioned it but might of definitely showed some if my stretch marks from my bodybuilding days both me and my bro used to compete in the same comps but different classes that show Reece went to would of been the expo with a pro comp in the evening quite good they are
My lad was at the NEC last Saturday at the bodybuilding show, didnt know your Bro was into competition or maybe you have told me and the ale has eroded the memory ;D Have a great one yourself mate and look out for me on telly 8)
Do Sky have cameras in the bar :-\

Oh I wouldn't expect anything else from British weather ::)
Not this weekend, but on Tues/Wed/Thurs I shall be in North Yorkshire. Booked a B & B in a farmhouse at Gillamoor near Kirkbymoorside. I'm not able to get out much at the moment because my elderly dog doesn't like me to leave him, I'm hoping to sneak off while he isn't looking. He is going to a friends house just up the road, he will be fine.
Looking forward to it.
Ilona
Heading to langdale tomorrow to do the langdale 10 Friday.Yha Friday night and doing another 10 + the day after. The aim is 24 peaks in 24 hrs over two days :o. Bit heavy for someone who doesn't usually do hills :0/ Pressure is off to a degree though as the gaffer's paid for a guide for this. It's a few lads from work. We're down from 15 who signed up to 4 now. See how it goes... ;0)
[/quote
Well that never happened. 😕
Did the langdale 10 peaks in ten hours on the Friday. Found it more difficult than I'd hoped for tbh. To much going down hill at a fair pace to make the time. Feet were bad (for all of us) so opted for a mooch around on the second day, as opposed to 12 more peaks😳. Loved the area and definitely heading back. 😊
Well that was a great weekend. Got up The Ben Via the CMD Arete on Friday. Wind, Hail, Snow, fog and still worth every second of the 12 hours it took me. :)
Off to Snowdonia again for more scrambling and climbing but we do walk between routes
Off to Snowdonia again for more scrambling and climbing but we do walk between routes
Interested to hear what you get done.....It will probably be something in the Ogwen i have had a few QMD's recently shark buttress, Cneifon Arete, a wet Idwal buttress and continuation and some climbing on the Idwal slabs, Bochlwyd buttress and Tryfan bach i am enjoying it mwm i remember Dave saying i will be moving into climbing soon enough turned out to be prophetic words
well, last night I slept in the summit shelter on Cadair Idris. I
Bank holiday means most people do their travelling on Friday and Monday, so Sunday looks good for a trip into Snowdonia. Weather looks promising too!I may not be in any fit state by Sunday but I'll keep my eyes open for you. Do you still look like your avatar ? ;D

We did Dolmen ridge and down climbed Bristly ridge
The giant boulder which came away complete with a large amount of turf when i put my foot on it was unsettling
Excellent. O0
Though, Mark put a pic of Dolman ridge on his Facebook and it tooked terrifying ;D
Tomorrow supposed to be good so might get out somewhere if i can shake the man flu >:(
Your going to appear a lot in the update I think Luke.Glad to hear that Dave hope its helped you unwind i saw your pic in another thread looks like you had a superb day for it
I managed to get to the lakes and had a great day in glorious weather, I certainly needed it mate.
Attempting Winchelsea to Eastbourne in 9 hours. Roughly 27 miles, all in practice for going back to the SWCP in the summer.
First 12 miles is the difficult bit, fair bit of elevation, rated at 9/10 toughness, then a completely flat 15 mile stretch 1/10 toughness. Still havent found a decent fitting Trail Runner so having to go in my slightly too big New Balance's.
Mrs N has me packing boxes for the move, haven't even exchanged contracts yet so I ain't taping them up yet. We reckon this is house move no 29 so getting used to it now.Are you staying in Cumbria or moving out of the area ?
Are you staying in Cumbria or moving out of the area ?
For some reason I guessed/assumed you were near Kirkby Stephen.
We have moved house 28 times since we got married
If I'm lucky, just down the back garden and back.....
If not, then hobbling around the house with crutches! :-\
(https://c5.staticflickr.com/2/1707/26338116556_b86cc83542_b.jpg)
I'm confined to barracks packing for a house move which may yet prove abortive. Our purchasers have agreed to move out of their own house before exchanging contracts with us and now want us to pay them compensation if we cannot be out by a week on Tuesday even though we are yet to exchange on the house we are buying. Mrs N says she will take it off the market before they see a penny piece! Then today our movers say they can no longer do it on the day and we have had to scrabble around for another company. We have moved house 28 times since we got married - not doing it again! >:(
Did Mickle Fell (south route) today ... weather clear, followed the fence up & back ... many varieties of unknown birds & plants ...almost enjoyed as much as Kinder Scout...no-one else around for many miles..top walk!
Hope you enjoyed your walk to Duck's Pool BuzyG. It's one of my favourites. We were out this afternoon, walking from Burrator to Stanlake, then crossed over the A386 and down onto the Princetown railway track, and followed that back to Burrator. It was quite warm when we were out of the breeze.
Wish me luck for my gruelling 10m slog up from the layby to Yorkshire East Riding historic county top tomorrow (Sat 23rd). Managed to get some more fitness and altitude training in earlier this week so probably will try without oxygen bottles.
...so the question is, has anyone ever 'wild swam' in the tarns and if so do you have any tips? I would definitely like to give it a try!!
There were quite a few 'wild swimmers' there, some in just costumes and others in wet suits, so the question is, has anyone ever 'wild swam' in the tarns and if so do you have any tips? I would definitely like to give it a try!!
Lovely area. Hope the heavy rain that hit Worthing missed you ;)
I did a walk from Amberley Station today, taking in part of the West Sussex Literary Trail and part of the South Downs Way
Did you have to book it ;D
Today - me, Mel & Jon tackle the Pap of Coe...............in the pouring rain! Just off to meet up.
Sparnel
Oh dear. Forecast looks pretty grim Bill :(
Enjoy (if you can!) ;D
You forgot to mention the sleet :o
The weather was alright on the way up Dom :) ..... On the way down was a different story :-\ Having said that, at least the gale force winds and truly torrential rain held off until we all got back safe and sound O0

Do it Dom O0
My only advice would be.... waterproof your boots, wear gaiters and I hope you enjoy descending the steep, loose, rocky repaired path section as much as I did ;D
But seriously, do it. It's a smashing hill :)
There really should be a separate thread about where people are walking "during the week" too O0
There really should be a separate thread about where people are walking "during the week" too O0Start your own thread! :P
Anyway, no walking this weekend but 2 days along the Pennine Way planned for Tue and Wed. Train to Hebden Bridge and walk to Haworth then onto Gargrave next day and train home O0
I did a walk from Fittleworth in Sussex today, partly on the Serpent Trail, which wends its serpentine way through the Wealden Greensand
Sounds like s good walk :)
Lovely woodlands and heathlands, although the heather was past its best
Stanage Edge tomorrow ;)
I've been there it's gorgeous :)
All my plans collapsed this week so I am just going to concentrate on getting to the meet in Malham on the 8th Oct.See you there O0
Weather forecast looks good for Sunday if anyone fancies walking/scrambling in Snowdonia?
A brilliant day today on the Glyders with JulianC and MoelPysgod. Up Seniors Ridge onto Glyder Fach, then on to Y Garn, Foel Goch, Elidir Fawr and Mynydd Perfedd.
Thanks chaps!
That was a bloody good day. Thanks yourself. Though I'm not sure when you managed to squeeze Glyder Fach in - maybe when I was having a pee on Elidir Fawr?
Plan is for the Inn Pinn on the Friday and Kintail Sat/Sun Hope it works out
Probably up to the Cheviots on Sunday, in two minds as to whether to do The Cheviot itself or Hedgehope Hill or both, guess we'll have to see what A; The weather is planning, B: How I feel, C: If a better walk pops into mind, before I make a firmer decision.
Funny how plans change, will be doing Roseberry Topping instead this weekend.
Week before payday so a local Wolds walk for me :)
Heading up onto Kinder Scout tomorrow from Hayfield (via Sandy Heys). Our route includes Mill Hill & Burnt Hill, then up over Lantern Pike, before returning to Hayfield.
The weather could be rather wild!! Brrrrrrr!!! :o
Crikey that seems a bit hardcore! :o
Snow indeed! :o
The Met Office are pretty sure, that the previous very mild winters will be replaced by incredibly cold weather this winter.
i will probably stay indoors

Bowfell and Crinkle Crags.
Started well. Then clag and rain.
I was on the far eastern fells and watching that weather all afternoon moving in from the west.Yes got dark early. Following a path back to Dungeon Ghyll. We some how lost the track.
It finally arrived over me about 4pm ::)
Whitemoor Mead,
Keagleborough Mine,
Willabeam,
Whiteworks Mine
and finally Ailsborough Mine.
Amazing the things you just walk past and ignore until you know what they are. :)
I thought I knew Dartmoor well, but I have never heard of some of these. I know Whiteworks and Ailsborough (although I know it as Eylesbarrow), but I have never heard of the other three. Where are they?
Nowhere, judging by the weather forecast! >:(
There was today!
Wasn't "squally" here.]So was it just constant rain then?
Peak District for me. My first walk of over 5 miles since my Moel Eilio mooch....in fact, it'll be my first walk out of my home County since then as well. I'm hoping for a cold, crisp and sunny day but will be happy just to be out on something with some sort of gradient, whatever the weather :)
Looking at doing the amble fatgoat just got to sort work out. First challenge walk of the New year.
Off for a local North London/Hertfordshire walk tomorrow afternoon and evening with my children.
I think, as they are going on a 50k challenge walk next month, I shall generously allow them to carry my kit to help with their training.
I did take a small rucksack with my waterproofs and head torch in but it was mainly for forms sake.
That made me laugh. So did they carry your kit then.
Started at Hope station onto the great ridge to mam tor, rushup edge, brown knoll to Jacobs ladder and back into Edale.
This thread "Where are folks walking this weekend?" and "Your last walk" seem to be merging. I thought one was meant to be past tense and one future.
For the record I did the Long Meanygate - no, seriously that's the name of a track from Churchtown to Mere Brow near Southport.
I went to Hebden Bridge to do Stoodley Pike. Weather was lousy, sleeting. I came back :(
As mentioned higher up the thread my kids were out walking on Saturday in the worst weather we have had round here all year, very cold with snow and sleet almost all day but the ground not frozen so they were deep in mud.
My daughter called it a day at 40km but my son pressed on for the whole 50km, I am very proud of both of them.
Son at the finish second from left.

Your son looks very like you :)Yes he does, poor sod.
Yes thank you Sunnydale that makes me feel a whole lot better! :P
Did you go up to the balcony?
Dovedale yesterday.
Absolute mud bath with all the recent rain.
Hoping to travel up to the Peaks next weekend and do Kinder Scout (never been) ..
If the weather forecast improves, I really think you should! You'll love it O0
Nice to see the weather forecast looking [censored] again for the weekend................... >:(
Hoping to undertake the Headingley/Armley/Bramley ‘Tithe to 2009’ Boundary Trail tomorrow, a short, four-mile, largely urban walk which, for a portion of its length, follows the Airedale railway line, and the Leeds & Liverpool canal, which are themselves concomitant for a significant proportion of their lengths.
One of my favourite walks used to be from the dark arches under Leeds central station and out to Kirkstall Abbey along the canal tow path. The Dark Arches are - quite literally - awesome, and rather uncanny in a strange way. There's something about elderly structures like that, particularly dark, hidden, cathedral-like structures, which really puts me on edge, but I still enjoy it (so I guess it's a sublime feeling). I suppose they're quite alien to us today, with how brightly-lit and clinical everything is; by comparison, the Dark Arches almost seem to be 'grown', rather than constructed! I have the same feeling from cathedrals, Victorian factories etc.
After taking last sunday off to spend time with my gorgeous wife, i'll be back on the hills again this sunday. I'll hopefully be completing my challenge to do the "three peaks" in pairs, with Pen Y Ghent and Ingleborough being my playground for the day. Hoping for better views from the summits this weekend but Que sera sera, just looking forwar to another good stretch of the legs.

The only aspect that I don't like is the smell from the water down there.

I walked the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head to Eastbourne today. I've recently been doing a lot of walks in the Sussex Weald and much though I enjoyed them it was great being back on the South Downs.
I'll be walking the South Downs Way in 3 weeks, is it muddy? lol
Stunning Saturday spent walking and scrambling on Cadair Idris
Finally got round to doing the Horseshoe path up Pen Y Fan from the Upper Neuadd Reservoir. Fantastic day!
Well I was going to dust the cobwebs off my tent and park my canvas in Norfolk (a County I've not bagged yet)
... or I might stay in bed and feel sorry for myself ;D
I'm sure others know some fabulous places in Norfolk (if you do get chance to go sometime) but I came across the small town of Holt, several years ago.
The surrounding area and the town itself are delightful. I do mean to go back for a few days holiday some time as I was only there through work and didn't see nearly enough of the place.
Don't stay in bed, even if you feel terrible it'll be worth getting up and having a lope around.
I walked on the South Downs north of Brighton today, taking in woodland paths, beautiful valleys, and Ditchling Beacon with its panoramic views. A very scenic walk.
I'll be started my South Downs Way walk on Friday, I look forward to having the same views as you keep teasing me with O0
With much anticipation, a pleasant circular in the South Downs from East Meon, taking in Butser Hill and Old Winchester Hill.
Hopefully the Sustainability Centre about half way round will be open for refreshments.
Just did Scafell pike for the first time at 56. Sat morning from Wastwater end. So busy. At least 600-700 folk. Good view of Great Gable near the top. But apart from that was way to "commercial" to thoroughly enjoy. At least I've done it though.
A good reason to do the less popular hills and areas when it's a Bank Holiday O0
Leading an 11 mile walk on Saturday; Highshaw Clough, Moscar, Stanage End, Stanage Edge, North Lees, Bamford Edge & Hordron Edge....with a lot of lovely bits in between! Weather looks fairly good too! 8)
No walk planned for this coming weekend, will be sat on me bum all weekend watching rugby league instead. The following weekend though is a trip to Ingleborough, more specifically Gaping Gill, Bradford Caving Club have their annual winch event on, can highly recommend it if anyone is in the area.
Yorkshire Three Peaks on Saturday, can't wait!
Great Langdale for me and the other half this weekend - I'll look out for Mel and Bricam.
I'll look out for you too.... you should be easy to spot .... you'll be the one staggering from pub to pub in the general Langdale Valley area :D
;D :2funny:
Top marks for concentrating and cross threading!!
Have you got any, routes or areas in mind?
I have never yet seen Rannerdale Bluebells - but if you head that way there's always plenty of other good walking.
I think the Bluebells at Rannerdale might have gone by now - that was a potential "further afield" trip for me if the timing was right O0
I went to Cuckmere Haven and walked the Seven Sisters today, my favourite walk :) A lot of people up there!
Weather has been brill all week
Great news, April. How did you manage to avoid the thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon? We got back to the hotel around 3.15 and the heavens opened about 5 minutes later and kept going for some hours. The next day we met a couple of wet French chaps who had wild camped near Bowfell and had been caught in the rain. You were lucky I think!
Leading a walk tomorrow up to Alport Castles. Part of the route will head over Margery Hill and then along Howden Edge .No point asking if u want to go that way for a walk on Sunday then! Another time :)
Looking forward to it, so hoping the weather's OK.

How was it Sunnydale?
I decided on a low level walk and then wondered all day if I should have chosen to go higher.
No point asking if u want to go that way for a walk on Sunday then! Another time :)
I was planning on starting at Edale but I did wonder if there is anywhere else that it could be started where there is easy (and free) parking?? ::)
Cheers
Lee
How about Birchen Clough?....

Going up Kinder this way myself very soon. Quieter than the other routes from Edale/Hayfield. It's a really nice way up too!
Tracey :)
If work and weather are both calm then Kinder from Hayfield for me on Saturday.
Anothwer couple of Wainwright's for me tomorrow, Bowscale fell and Bannerdale crags all being well.
add on to that Souther Fell for a nice 7 mile circular route that I did last summer from Mungrisedale O0
http://brians-walks.co.uk/lakes-mungrisdale.html (http://brians-walks.co.uk/lakes-mungrisdale.html)
when you get to Bannerdale Crags and look over and see Souther Fell, you might decide to "bag" it as well O0
Lovely walk Lee. I can still remember walking that route almost 40 years ago, on a geology field trip. O0
Sorry we put your knee under strain. Hope there's no lasting damage. Are you using poles to help?
Yes, there is normally plenty of parking available in Main Street. Try the Old School Tearoom while you're there - I can thoroughly recommend it.
Didn't find the cave. however got a photo while approximatley there, that looks like one on the Net at the beginning of tha path to it. So next time!
trying to find Millican Dalton's Cave Hotel - a fascinating story.
Finally a look at Rigghead slate quarry with the ruined buildings, tunnels (only a peek!), paraphernalia etc.
J
I'm supposed to be doing a variation of the Edale Skyline tomorrow....20 miles or so....but as usual these days, the weather looks a bit grim ::)
We had a lovely walk yesterday around Walberswick and Blythburgh (north Suffolk). Did a 8.5 circular route and there were lots of bits we hadn't done before. Weather was good and saw lots of dragonflies, partridges and a snake! Not sure if it was a grasssnake or adder as it was quite well hidden.
You on a mission from God?Is poor Beefy not even allowed to call her April now?
Is poor Beefy not even allowed to call her April now?
Is poor Beefy not even allowed to call her April now?;D ;D
8) I've even got my own smiley 8)
Ha ha - I assumed Beefy was paraphrasing this film quote "There's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark out, and we're wearing sunglasses." [/size]I wouldn't dare risk offending one of the senior members of the forum. :)
You on a mission from God?
Is poor Beefy not even allowed to call her April now?
No, or I won't cook his tea :DIt's a pic of derwent water for gods sake ?
beefy your pic link is coming up as adult content :o ;D
I hope you are having a nice time... while I'm slaving away at work...not fair...not fair :'(Look on the bright side,
Although sunday has been designated as a walking day I'm struggling for inspiration as to where to walk. Looking for a fairly longish walk, 10 - 20 miles, nice scenery, nothing too strenuous but then again nothing flat, circular and within 2.5 hours drive of Newcastle, any thoughts?
Fairfield Horseshoe ?
Coledale Horseshoe ?
Kentmere Horseshoe ?
Thanks for those, filed away for shorter days out, although the Cross Fell one could be my last "training" walk before the Lyke Wake in September.
How about something a bit closer to home and less crowded?

After seeing some lovely pictures of heather in the "Best Pic of the Day" topic, I'm heading up to the North Yorks. Moors to fill my senses with purple loveliness :)
Lovely photos Adalard. It looks like you were at Barbrook Reservoir. The heather's always nice around that area. O0
Nice one Adalard. Hopefully I'll be able to pop over to have a look before it all fades.
The Cinder track from Scarborough to Whitby. I have walked the stretch from Ravenscar to Whitby before but have fancied doing the whole stretch (21 miles) for a while and seeing as Kielder water didn't happen last weekend this weekend is an ideal opportunity to A: Get a long walk in and B: take the new pop top with us and get used to it and kit it out, win/win situation in my book.
That's one of my winter "training walks" as it's usually quiet then, not many bikes either and gets you some good mileage. Not very nice walking through Scarborough but once you get through the last housing estate, it's a nice walk O0
Cheers Bricam, didn't know what to expect of the Scarborough stretch, but I love the stretch in between Ravenscar and "The Bay", some great views to be had and in the most part more sheltered than the coast path.
Spent Sunday on the fells above Haweswater - Corpse Road, Selside, Branstree, Tarn Crag and Grey Crag. In clag from 9.30 to 2.00. In bog most of that time too. This is probably a very nice walk, but with visibility of 50 metres until I dropped down to Gatesgarth Pass I couldn't really say!
Paul
I'm off to Whitby on Saturday for a week... but may wait until Monday before I start doing the 'classic' coastal walks nearby. Hopefully all the holidaymakers will have gone back home by then :DNo point askin if u want a sunday walk then! One day, one day.
Got a few adventures planned but as always, it will depend on the weather!

Enjoy, things might have quietened down a little by then (kids back at school etc). If you're looking for a decent "watering hole" then I can highly reccomend the Waiting Room at the station, normally several craft beers and several ciders to choose from, no lagers, no spirits, no tv, no jukebox, no kids, well behaved dogs allowed, informal seating arrangements, just a great place to visit, relax and chat amongst yourselves or with others at your table.
No point askin if u want a sunday walk then! One day, one day.Sorry pleb :( We'll get there....eventually! O0
This weekend will be Monadh Mor and Beinn Bhrotain from Glen Feshie followed by camping somewhere on the Moine Mhor, probably by Loch nan Cnapan.
The current plan for tomorrow is High Cup Nick... It's been on the list for years. Really hoping for good weather and all the views I can drink in.Its well worth doing!!!
The current plan for tomorrow is High Cup Nick... It's been on the list for years. Really hoping for good weather and all the views I can drink in.Which way you thinking of going, Dufton or Cow Green Reservoir? I walked from Cow Green last year, approx a 16 mile round trip including the diversion down to Cauldron Snout. The best thing about walking from Cow Green is you don't actually see High Cup until the last few metres when it opens up in front of you, definately a wow moment.

Whichever, enjoy your walk.
My plans have all changed now seeing as the weather forecast for tomorrow through to Tuesday is kakkapants... exactly the length of time I was planning on going up to the Lakes and camping for a couple of nights >:(
Hopefully be walking some more of the cuckoo way. ..
We are taking a stroll up Snowdon tomorrow. Hopefully the weather improves :)
Had a nice walk round Sproatley (East Yorkshire) on Saturday with my WI walking group. 4 miles in the sunshine and warm winds, across fields and along quiet country lanes. Lovely :)
Oh my life, I've walked some of it! :D Had no idea it was called the Cuckoo Way though. :-[
I walked the section from Worksop to Retford a couple of years ago!
I would say that is the best part especially the Turner wood section, that bit is very pretty.
I'm finishing it this weekend, only got the Killamarsh to Chesterfield section to do.
Forecast's not looking good for Keswick at the mo Penygadair :(
You can always enjoy the traditional Cumbrian (or was it Colombian) culture in the Market Place.
But...I'm a little concerned about the current forecast :oI'm up in the Peaks this weekend with Mrs R, so no big walks but we were hoping to get out a bit. Still the weather forecast has been wrong before.
Not far judging by sunday forecast :(

I walked over the South Downs today from Woodingdean on the outskirts of Brighton to Lewes. Still very windy but fine and sunny and there was no mist obscuring the fabulous views :)
Tomorrow shouldn't be too bad up to lunch time-ish....but then goes rapidly down hill early afternoon with prolonged heavy showers and 40mph winds.
We are hoping to wild camp in the Lakes somewhere out of the wind :)
Is that actually possible with Beefy? :D
;D ;D ;D

Oi.... :(

Maybe the winds of change are blowing.......................
The wigwam? Do you mean the iron age village?
I have a Christmas Walk with my group tomorrow, around the Castleton area. We'll probs be trudging over the Great Ridge at some point!.................
I'm probably going to jinx the wall-to-wall sunshine forecast for Saturday by saying this but.... I'm heading to the Dales :D

Off to Tintagel for 3 days walking the coast and, hopefully, some inland paths - Cornwall is not noted for well waymarked and accessible paths.
Off to Tintagel for 3 days walking the coast and, hopefully, some inland paths - Cornwall is not noted for well waymarked and accessible paths.
The paths around Tintagel are wonderful. Have a great break Mel.
Had a walk along the bank of the Humber from Paull, was down to t shirt most of the way till the sun went in. An easy walk, building up strength after a back problem, ready for a week in the Yorkshire Dales in July
I was on the southern part of the Gritstone Trail yesterday - it was supposed to be a two-day walk of the whole thing but around three miles from my accommodation I slipped in mud and pulled my back. I carried on for a mile but it was too painful and I decided I had to cancel my plans & ring home for a rescue lift from my OH.
I did think about carrying on to the pub I'd booked into for the night but I figured either:
a) I'd wake up unable to continue the walk this morning and be stuck in the middle of nowhere (there'd be no option of a lift this morning), or
b) I might feel better enough to carry on but lugging my backpack over another 16 miles of hills could aggravate the injury.
As it is, I am better but still sore and walking today wouldn't have been a wise move so I think I made the right call.
Definitely the right call. I carried on with an ache and it stopped any long walks for a couple of weeks.
Well I never, it was a toss up between a walk along the old disused railway line from Hull to Hedon then on to Paull (for a pint or two) or Pocklington canal, but opted for the latter
Off to Wasdale tomorrow for two nights, three days walking. Staying at the Wasdale Head so there may be some beer involved too! Very excited.
....... otherwise I'll be adding to the list of Claggwrights!Nooooooooo :(
Cheers April - I love Wasdale, it's been my favourite since childhood, though I've not walked quite a few of the lesser known fells yet.
Enjoy the Far East - China or Kentmere ;D ?
A bit further north ;)
Enjoy Wasdale pdstsp O0 We are heading to the Far East this weekend ;)Sweden?
Russia? :2funny:
Sweden?
I walked on the South Downs today from Falmer to Lewes via Blackcap in the glorious spring sunshine :) And there wasn't much mud!
Almost a year ago I was walking the South Downs Way with no mud :D
This time next week I'll be doing the North Downs Way, what's the mud situation on that? :)
We'e off to Scotland for a 3 nighter
I can't wait to wear my kilt, swing my sporren, sample the single malt,
And especially for ridge, show off pics of my trossachs ;D
Thanks sunnydale ;D
Sounds like fun! :D Hope you both have a great time O0
I can't wait to wear my kilt, swing my sporren, sample the single malt,
And especially for ridge, show off pics of my trossachs ;D
We'll just be staying local in Derbyshire this weekend, I think. Thanks adalard we did trip reports to follow O0
Hope you have a great time in Scotland, April and Beefy. O0
Trainers not boots today,Well that was a mistake, got a blister now :(
I walked on the South Downs near Lewes today, via the village of Glynde and the hillfort of The Caburn. This area isn't on the SDW itself and is an outlier from the main escarpment but it offers fine walking over rolling hills, with panoramic views, and there are masses of wild flowers on the chalk grassland.
Camped at Lee valley almost wild campsite, Broxbourne. Did a little forest walk and checked out a lake, cooked dinner n brekky on the 🔥.Raining in Glen Nevis :(
Far too hot for any serious walking for me though.
It's 29° here. How is it elsewhere?
Good for him.
I am in the middle of a trip to the Lakes with my son and my dad.
Raining in Glen Nevis :(
We drove east to try to escape the rain - all the way to Glen Feshie! Caught some drizzle but it was dry on the way back down the Glen from the bothy.
Forecast for tomorrow better though. :)
Mate it's too hot here. Think i got minor heat stroke earlier. Rains a pain, but heat's a killer.
I reckon you've got some damn amazing views up there too. I have to get to the highlands.
Hope it dries up for you tomo
* for "most likely" and "probably" read "absolutely definitely, beyond a shadow of a doubt" ;D
# for "fairly reasonable" read "not raining and not maftingly hot" :D
# for "fairly reasonable" read "not raining and not maftingly hot" :D
;D
Maftingly. Now that is a new word for me.
I hope it is warm enough this weekend so I can use it. "Am reet mafted" will be THE in phrase ;D
Word of the week. Definitely nicking that one. O0
Out with our WI walking group yesterday. I think we spent more time in the cafe than we did doing the walk. Now that's what I call proper walking ::) O0
Off to sunny Lake District in the morning for four days - staying in Boot, Wasdale and Langdale. Was going to make it a walking tour but my lower back has partly "spasmed" again so I'm going to drive - it will give me a back up plan.
Thanks April - Sunday does look challenging! You camping out?
We are but we don't know where yet. I will have to get planning now the weather forecast has improved :)
Plan C - go on Monday (because the Sunday ferry is fully booked >:( )
Have a great trip. O0
Yesterday I hiked up to the peak of Castro valnera Mountain(1700m) in cantabria, Spain. 750m climb, 6.5km there and back down. We took the hard route, less travelled, guided by the girlfriends dad who last did it 40 years ago! Some times walk therapy does the trick just fine. :)
I think he was really happy to revisit something from his youth.
It was a tough one, but a good challenge, a real knee buster and my dodgy leg seems to be perfect after an odd, but effective treatment
Hopefully up the arans tomorrowI think there is a herbal cure for that. :)
Did the Limestone Way & Lathkill Dale on Saturday with the group. About 30 of us attended! :oBlimey! That's too many........done a couple of walks like that, bit hectic.
Think I'll stick to week-day walks. :D
Dartmoor for me, up the Swincombe valley just to see what clouds look like from the inside.Well the weather was much better than forcast. Really mild day and not much cloud or rain, up on the North West moor. We found the bomber again. The remaining engine by the plaque is in decent condition. Well for 75 years on the moor it is. O0
Weather looks ok but not counting any chickens.
Lucky you, sounds like a great walk, must get down to Dartmoor again soon O0You should indeed. I never tire of that little corner of the moor. Lovely cool sunny afternoon and the strong SW wind blew me up the hard bits.
I get to play the King in Cinderella this time. Last year I was the King in Snow White...With a bit of wild camping you might get to play Queen next year!
No walking this weekend, our village charity is putting on its annual panto tonight. I get to play the King in Cinderella this time. Last year I was the King in Snow White - its the only outfit I've got. Just been putting the chairs out in the village hall and now feeling distinctly nervous - its a sell out and that's an awful lot of chairs. I'll need a decent walk next week to get over it.Sounds well worth missing a walk for enjoy. May be next year they can do Twelth Night. I can imagine you making an exelent Malvolio.
The weather was attrosious.
If you are heading for Rough tor car park and Brown Willy, then that is the simplest route in. Turn off at Davidstow dairy and cut across the airfield.
So's your spelling ;) but glad the jacket held out. I am thinking of branching out to Bodmin. It is just on the hour to Launceston with a following wind then branch off up the A395 - what do you reckon?
There is free car park in the village of North Hill to the northeast with footpaths up onto the moor.Thanks. Look like it has a pub too!
Thanks. Look like it has a pub too!Yes, The Racehorse. Good reviews on Tadviser though I can't comment as it was closed on the one afternoon I was there :(
Thanks Buzy. I was looking at Kilmar Tor as well, looks fun on the aerial photos. Can you recommend a jumping off point where I can park?I enjoy the walk in from Minions, then cross the Whithey Brook and return via Tregarrick tor. Nice view from there over Siblyback, plus lots of antiquities along the way, if you enjoy those? All open access though not much trodden, so you may need to climb the odd gate.
Just booked a night in Mungrisdale on Saturday for a two day walking weekend - looking at the forecast for Saturday I may regret this one.
:( It does look pants :(
We will be doing a low level walk, we don't fancy the 50mph gusting winds and heavy rain higher up :(
You could always spend some time in the pub there, pdstsp :)
RidgeDaughter, very occasional member of this forum, is off on a 50km Scout challenge walk this weekend across the Chilterns. So I have a 2.5 hour round trip to drop her and her friends there this evening
Good luck RidgeDaughter O0Probably no wine tonight, I'll have to rectify that tomorrow.
I hope you get back soon enough to have a glass of wine before you retire for the evening :)
Ridgedaughter and team have completed the 50k walk.
One very, very proud Dad!
Love walking with my kids but this was her and her Scouting friends, nothing to do with me. She was the oldest in the group of 5 and, from what she was saying when she got back, did most of the map reading.
Congratulations Ridge and Ridgedaughter. Something very satisfying about completing a challenge with your offspring!
Ridgedaughter and team have completed the 50k walk.
One very, very proud Dad!
Make sure you but some rocks in your bag, Jontea, to hold you down :)
Certainly is! I'm off to the Lakes for the day with elder daughter - we may go mid-level though - she'll whinge if its too windy on the tops, so I'm thinking of Scawgill Bridge and wander up the forest tracks onto Barf, Lords Seat area - but I'm going to play it by ear in the morning. Enjoy Glenridding.
We are off on another wild camp, hope to be higher up than last week :)
Hope you both have a great trip bricam and pdstsp :)
I hope you ALL have a good time.
Happy now John? Where are you heading towards from Glenridding?
I hope you ALL have a good time.
Happy now John? Where are you heading towards from Glenridding?
I did a 10 Wainwright walk from Glenridding before, enjoyed it very much, the hills including Helvelyn came thick and fast O0
I had a 16 mile circular walk from Elterwater today, only 3 Wainwrights but long distances between them. Was a lovely feeling walking in a tshirt in Feb when you're expecting to be walking in full winter gear :D
I’m hoping to do a route which includes Glenridding Dodd, Sheffield Pike, Hart Side, Stybarrow Dodd, Watson’s Dodd, Great Dodd, Raise and finally White Side.
If all goes well, it should be an epic day.
Enjoy your walks guys, ;)
Just got home, completed the route. The wind from the south made the ridge hard work and by the time I got to ‘Raise’ I had to dig deep to find the energy to reach White Side as well.
Excellent day, unbelievable for February 8)
Sounds like an epic day, look forward to the TR.

I sent a wave your direction from Fairfield :D
I was in a tshirt as I was sheltered by the big wall going up Low and High Pike but the fleece, jacket and hat soon went on. Bit breezy up there.
In the distance I could see some brave/daft people crossing Striding Edge.
Enjoyed the horseshoe but the views were a bit mirky.
Sounds like an epic day, look forward to the TR.
Boring local walk for me but glorious weather.
I’ll be busy writing it up in the next couple of weeks when I get some time Mark.
Yes, it was a great day.
Gotta do the boring ones too mate, all adds up to the 520 ;)
What's the significance of 520 pray tell.
Sunday, we will be trying to find Pleb's bench by the River Eden :)Don't give him any money, he'll only spend it on Special Brew.
Lochgoilhead area - low level walks in the forest if the weather is foul, up in the surrounding hills if fine.

Ne'er cast a clout afore the May be outThe countryman, who leaves off his winter clothing too early might be caught out by the cold snaps still to come before the Hawthorne Blossom of early June.
The elder daughter .............. She has set herself a target of 50 Wainwrights by the end of the year and is on 10 1/2 at the moment. And I can't persuade her that turning round half way up Pike O'Blisco in the snow doesn't get her 1/2 a Wainwright.
You could 'let her declare it' but to get to the top, she has to reach her last high point anyhow - so it'll still need a full ascent ;D
The piggy back daysare way gone ;D . But I'm looking forward to tomorrow - days walking with her are my favourites. My other two are not as keen yet, but the two of us have some fun days.
And IM , I think deep down she knows. ;D
Time with your kids is just so precious. O0
Thinking of doing an overnight trip to the Ben Lawers group, for those that don't know these hills there on the north side of Loch Tay not far from the village of Killin.
Hopefully going over Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers before dropping down to Lochan nan Cat to camp. Coming back via Meall Garbh and An Stuc. Of course if you don't know the area that will mean nothing to you.
This will be my first outing since hurting my leg a month ago, so fingers crossed it is heeling ok.

I intended to have a wander around Patterdale onto High Street and an overnighter on Place Fell but the forecast is -8 and I haven’t the necessary sleeping bag to handle that
...
I’ll probably just wait another week or two.
I hope you have a good trip and are ok with your leg O0+1 O0
I don't know any of the places you mention ;D Perhaps you should do a TR so we can learn about the area? ;) We would love to see some nice pics :)

Good idea, that's pretty cold. I wouldn't want to try -8 without the proper kit (having tried -6 with army surplus thermals and a 10.5 tog duvet).
Hopefully won't be quite that chilled this weekend. Though Saturday night does look chilly up on place fell. Have a good walk.
Enjoy Ben Lawers, Owen; hope that it goes well.
In really frosty conditions, it is often warmer on the top of the hill than in the valley below.
I'm going to try out the route suggested by Ninthace in another thread:
Steamer from Pooley Bridge to Howtown, then up on to the tops and return to PB via Loadpot hill and the roman road. 8)
I'm going to try out the route suggested by Ninthace in another thread:Sorry I cannot claim credit for that route, that route suggestion is richardh1905's Mine was an easier way from the Helton road.

Do any of you know about the cheap parking at Pooley Bridge this time of year? I think I've found the entrance at 54.6127129, -2.8183325 (NY4724624481) but don't know how much a day is? Is it 3 pounds in an honesty box? Is it even open? Having paid £8 last time I'd rather save a few quid this time.Add https://en.parkopedia.co.uk/ (https://en.parkopedia.co.uk/) to your list of useful websites

If you search the old threads I did put up a file with the gpx locations of NT car parks in the Lakes. http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=30400.0

Thanks ninthace. I notice you haven't included the National Trust car park in Pooley Bridge in your points of interest though!Parkopaedia says the Eusemere car park belongs to the LDNPA. If there is another one it may post date the file. The file on the website was as accurate as I could make it using NT data at the time I compiled it.
Maybe I'm mistaken and it's not National Trust?
There is free parking in a layby at Roehead.
Thanks ninthace. I notice you haven't included the National Trust car park in Pooley Bridge in your points of interest though! There are a few free spaces near the Church in Martindale.

The free layby parking was full when I arrived at 9 am.Thems as is keen get fell in previous. I have arrived at popular spots such as Seathwaite at 0700 and not been any way near the first. Either there are people even keener oneself or last night's wild campers haven't come down yet.
So where did you end up? The 3 quid slots facing the church?
Cheers Rob, that's where I'm planning to park tomorrow. How did the walk go? You had a nice day for it. :)
What a day, sun, hail, sun, cold wind and sun again.
Fortunately the hail only started as we were within striking distance of the cafe we were heading to for lunch.

Where did you go Ridge?I live on the northern edge of London so it was a wander round the fields and woods of Hertfordshire. I wont see a decent hill until June, when I'll be in the Peak District and I'm not up in your part of the world until July. This is why I take so much interest in the Lakes walks of you and others, it is just for the vicarious pleasure.

Do trip reports if you want to, not because you feel that you should.
If only people as knowledgeable as April posted in the Lake District threads they would be very sparse.

Satisfying and rewarding are good words. Fun is a synonym of pleasure, it's possible I overuse it. Everything pleasurable to me gets classed as fun.
I've never tried a group walk don't know if I'd like it. Possibly I could join a ramblers group with a slower group, I was thinking of trying out the Penrith ramblers when I lived there. Something for the bucket list.
Deffinatley give it a go. I am no socialiser, but I have found new freinds and learnt a good deal, as a result of walking with a group.
Got a photo of the view accross the valley towards Back tor woods and High Willhay?
Happy memories of youth. Good walking country. Plus a fine hill climb on a push bike up from Hebdon bridge, as I recall.
You must have had thighs of iron to ride a bike up there regularly. Respect! It was the getting there and back, from Liverpool, that required thighs of iron. A around 145 mile circuit over many a fine hill. O0
I'm leading our WI walking group on a bluebells walk tomorrow. Our usual walk leader has had an op which means she can't walk far for a month or two. The weather's not looking that great mindst, but I hope the rain showers hold off until we get in the cafe at the end :)Have a great walk Mel. The Bluebells are glorious this year. O0
That looks rubbish. Couldn't you have found somewhere a bit better? ;) :D :PWe were walking North. So the first I saw of the water fall, was when I looked over the edge and realised it was a 100 ft staight down. :o

Cup Final and Eurovision on TV tomorrow - definitely two good reasons to head for the hills.Used to be a good reason to head for the car keys. Empty roads, traffic free driving. Not any more. A walk sounds like a fine plan. O0
A fine weekend. Dartmoor Saturday around Two bridges area and upnto the East Dart waterfall.St Ives down to Sennen Cove is one of my favourite stretches of the SWCP. Coastal Cornwall at its most rugged.
Then a drive down Zennor, near at Ives, early this morning, to meet the walking group for a realy enjoyable walk on the SW coast path taking in Gunards head. :)
St Ives down to Sennen Cove is one of my favourite stretches of the SWCP. Coastal Cornwall at its most rugged. On the right day the Asur blue sea over crisp white sand, waves crashing into the base of the granite cliffs, tin mines dotted across steep crags. Realy does take some beating. O0
Does anyone here know who is legally responsible for the upkeep of the Eigiau carpark, i think i have done some damage to the underneath floorpan of my car. There is nothing on Parkopaedia. I think it may be a case of caveat emptor, especially if you saw it before you drove into it. I always investigate potholes if I have any doubts and use a spotter when negotiating potholes in car parks to help me straddle them if possible.
The potholes inside the carpark are getting so deep, that unless you have significant clearance from your car, its impossible not to do some damage, and the deepest hole, is right inside the entrance, so it cannot be avoided.
Theres one hole that only a 4x4 can clear safely.
A couple of quick snaps towards and from the very top of Gurnard's head. What a view that was. :)
The woman is a genius.
Its OK she is on the other sofa, she can't see what I am typing.
Never ever ever ever say that Mark, they never forget ::)

Decided at the last minute (yesterday) to take the offer of a lift to Fort William on Sunday. So will walk the Great Glen Way.Not sure how I'll get on as have recently had to be admitted back onto cardiology I.C.. They spotted a problem via my internal permanent heart monitor. Great bit of kit. Sends wireless signal nightly to the local hospital and they look at the trace daily. No problems now . Been taken off the beta blockers as they were slowing the ticker too much. Looking forward to a long easy (er) walk and may be able to find out if I do have a second gear. Bag packed, 12Kilo, counting food for the week and water. A few nights under the stars to look forward to.Good luck & take care.

Dartmoor again for me today. Got in some serious training for the Dartmoor Highground Marathon.

Good luck with the marathon, busyg. Thanks Richard. I just hope it's not too hot.
I think this is the event my brother was planning to do, sounds quite interesting.
Not too many entrants around 60 so far. May I ask his name?
Not on the list yet. Still time though. :)
Pete Merrick.
I'm going back to Queen Elizabeth Country Park, near Petersfield, by bus to Clanfield first, then will either run or walk into the park, I've not decided yet. Its the best time of the year, the leaf colours can be fantastic. Halfway around I'll stop at the Visitor Centre cafe for coffee and cake and then decide my way back, either to return to Clanfield, make my way to Horndean, or to finish at Rowlands Castle.I'm intending doing a walk from East Meon this weekend, so will be looking down on you from atop Butser Hill.
Embleton, Northumberland along the beach to Dunstanburgh Castle and almost to Craster, and then back along the inland route. Blistering sunshine and a strong wind soon cleared away the cobwebs.Shoosh man! That area is top secret. The best beach in the UK is Embleton beach. I love the bit further south of Craster, especially Cullernose point down past the rumbling kern through the sugar sands and along to the FBI in Boulmer. (Fishing Boat Inn), along another long sandy beach from Seaton point, past Foxton and arriving at Alnmouth. Its muckle canny that yin.

O0 There are a lot of great sandy beaches in Northumberland., truly a hard choice as to which is best but Seaton Point and Embleton are much quieter people wise.
My personal favourites? Beadnell closely followed by Druridge bay. Bamburgh would be in a class of its own ;)

What are you too like ::)Yes April you are absolutely right.
Northumberland is pants, people won't enjoy it and should go somewhere else O0
I think you will find that the best UK beaches are in Scotland: Luskentyre, Mellon Udrigle, St Cyrus, Firemore are a few we’ll worth walking.Phew thanks BFM, you are of course (ahem) correct.
Northumberland is safe.
Most of the beaches in Northumberland are still covered in mines from the war. I wouldn't risk it. And there's wolves. Hungry ones!
Thanks I had forgotten to mention that. In fact the whole of Northumberland has the same problem ;)

Lovely route that Rob. I've just been Photonutted, he has walked the very legs off me on a jaunt from Wasdale Head. He's like a bouncy mountain goat.
Bet Brock Crags was wet?
... He's like a bouncy mountain goat.
Cracking day. Legs of lead today! And I think my description is about right. Thanks for slowing down yesterday. Great route, chuffed to do the great door route at last.

Got three days in Borrowdale this weekend, and, touch wood, the forecast looks good.
A short walk along the Northumberland Coast Path, from Embleton to Craster, passing Dunstanburgh Castle.
Enjoy, it does look good but very cold. I can't make my mind up where we are going but it will a wild camp somewhere with a sunset view :)
I can't get enough of trees after living in Orkney for 17 years!
Did you get a sunset view on Saturday - there were quite a few clouds around the Borrowdale area?
Had a great walk with Photonut on Saturday, Seatoller- Base Brown, Green Gable, Brandreth, Haystacks, Fleetwith Pike, Honister, Seatoller, Haweswater Gold.
Dunstanburgh Castle is lovely.
:)
We did, not a great sunset but we did get a view of it :) We were above Wast Water.
Haweswater Gold? I can't recall that fell name ;)
A leisurely circular walk today following the long carriage drive near Cragside at Rothbury in Northumberland. Coquetdale bathed in winter sunshine.

Off to the Malvern Hills :)
Last week, this week and perhaps next I'm down to about a mile or less a day, coping with a nasty running pain at the back of my right calf! For the past few mornings after getting up, it feels as though it's better, but like this morning after about 200yds of slowly and carefully walking its back! Going to get the frozen peas out again, plus an elevated leg sofa routine. I need to somehow get myself back to normal before I leave for my trip to La Palma in early January. Most annoying!Could it be a back problem, rather than the calf. My sciatica generally manifests itself in calf pain (and back pain). Some Pilates, yoga or just gentle stretches on the floor could make this go away. I generally find that if I press around the area of the pain, it has no effect (i.e. the pain is not actually there) and this generally points to referred pain from an irritated or trapped nerve.
Not walking but at Whitley Bay on boxing day for the annual North Sea dip.
As I get older I find that it takes longer to plodge in past the knees. Need to be pushed in to get the full body effect nowadays.
Once dried and clothed you seem to stay warm until the end of March, they say!.
No, they divvent gie medals to gonniels. :D
You deserve a medal!
Might go for a family walk around Grasmere, Rydal and up Loughrigg if the weather improves as forecast.
I still have memories of walking around Rydal from (ahem) 51 years ago - bracken covered slopes of Loughrigg above Rydal, tadpoles in a slate cavern, and an ascent of mighty Helm Crag, my first Lakeland fell (certainly seemed mighty to a 7 year old).
Contemplating the climb to the top of Simonside, Northumberland, New Year’s Day.

Oh, yes!Nice one. :)
The Humbleton and Harehope Circuit follows St Cuthbert's Way going westwards over Gains Law and Black law.
That is a fab walk :)
Humbleton and Harehope circuit today, Cheviot in the background. 39 brave souls plus 3 park rangers to maintain order!
..
Nice photo, Hadrian - but 42 people in a group!
Best place to park in Bowes is the village hall at the entrance to the village. The Ancient Unicorn in Bowes is a decent pub to finish at.
Thinking of you jimbob. My father had that done 12 years ago and it was a great success. Thanks to you all. Everything seems to be ok. Neither a bad nor painful procedure. Some nettle type pain today. All the nurses say the technology has leaped ahead, this one only cuts in if the heart rate goes below 30 bpm, but interestingly if it notices (dunno how) that you are straining as in high level exercise and your heart isn't responding it will up the bpm.
Thanks. That is what I'm hoping for. Miss out on my local 4mile daily this week but into it big time the week after. Plans are for Hadrians Wall, if no snow forecast, in Feb, this time West to East. Testing enough, but close to bail out points all the way. So that will be both a "weekend" and a "during the week" walk, not going to kill myself.
Sunday's planned walk is a 10 mile circular fromBowes -
"The Pennine village of Bowes evolved around the medieval castle within the village which in turn evolved around the Roman fort of Lavatrae in the early AD 70's. This walk begins in the village and follows the River Greta upstream to the natural arch of God's Bridge before crossing open land to follow Sleightholme Beck, ones of the River Greta's tributaries. From the beck the walk climbs on to the Pennine moors and progresses over wild open uplands to the high point of the walk at the Citron Seat trig point before gently rolling off the moor to Gilmonby and back into Bowes."
Circular walk today from Elsdon in Redesdale, Northumberland. Only 5 miles, but very muddy underfoot and drizzle for half the walk. Enjoyable nonetheless.Did you see the gibbet, Dad always reckoned that Winter was a distant relative. He also said there was a route somewhere near there where they walked the geese and obviously sheep and cattle from southern Scotland to the marts around Newcastle. You just brought that back to mind. I'll need to get my old maps out. Though many drovers routes were never put down on the maps and they didn't have satellite views in those days either.

Hoping to do a 6 mile Ramblers walk on Saturday with my lad and the dog. Was thinking of joining, but the vast majority of walks are on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays, which are the exact days I work, so not sure it'd be worth it.With the ramblers, the walks are set for whatever day of the week a group member offers to lead one. So yes your right mainly Sundays and Wednesdays, but you could always join up and set a new trend for leading walks on a Saturday and Tuesday. One thing is for sure others will also want to walk on those days. O0

Our group walk planned for Sunday has been cancelled dew to the weather forecast. That's the first time that has happened since I joined the group. :(
If you are walking this weekend, put some stones in your pockets.Indeed. I was planning to go up Ingleborough on Sunday but I’m now going to walk on the Bridgewater Canal. Even that may get cancelled if it’s horrendous.

Whereabouts on the Bridgewater Canal?. We walked the local section from Altrincham to Manchester yesterday (glorious sunshine!) and, going from memory, there was a towpath closure notice between Marsland Bridge and Sale from this weekend until the end of the month. Thanks for letting me know even if it won’t affect me.
Edit: found it (http://www.bridgewatercanal.co.uk/news/article.aspx?ID=278), it doesn't affect Sunday.
Just rechecked the weather - Saturday now looking good if a bit draughty and no weather warning in force until Sunday. Looks like we can get a walk in first thing and then shop in the afternoon. We are planning to pay homage to Johnny Kingdom and give his bust a pat.Yes, it looks decent for an early start tomorrow. O0
Good luck. I still think you may need waders in places!
My thoughts are going out to those poor souls who have to be out at sea in such poor weather.Seconded
Nowhere, have you seen the weather !!!.
Storm Ciara is really battering Dyffryn….
My thoughts are going out to those poor souls who have to be out at sea in such poor weather.
SecondedThe worst I have had is a force 9 gale on a mine hunter in the North Sea. I have landed at Aberdeen in 80 mph winds and that is something I won’t be rushing to repeat. (I was a passenger rather than a pilot).
I did my sea training on the Hong Kong guard ship. We had to follow a typhoon sending half hourly weather reports. It an experience I would not want to repeat. We lost the bridge wipers, the stanchions round the upper deck and bent the gun director that was mounted behind the bridge. The sea even took the paint off. My reports became a bit shorter when the Stephenson Screen bolted to the inside of the bridge wing disappeared over the side along with the thermometers leaving just the bolts.
Stay safe out there. Watch out for flying debris.
Ah, Shetland. Wild up there - these people Sooth don't know the meaning of the word 'Storm'. :)We did in 1987, no power for 5 days. When making an insurance claim for freezer contents, it was suggested we should make jam with the fruit. I pointed out we had an electric cooker. Claim was paid.

I am trying to decide whether to walk from Lelant to St. Ives or go around The Loe again.Well did Lelant to St. Ives and back, expensive lunch in St. Ives, but saw some interesting art.
Coffee in town first then I shall decide.
.................... I hear that the magnolia is coming out just across the border in Cornwall too.
We had a fated walk this weekend. The plan was to go shopping early and do a walk from one of the villages on the way back. We arrived at the start point to realise I had left my poles and hat behind. We tried for a while but I still need poles for longer walks so we aborted and went home. After lunch, we were ready again, complete with all the forgotten gear, but realised after a mile or two of driving that we had forgotten our boots this time. So we went back, got the boots and did a local walk instead. Just as well really - we had been on a decent walk the day before and by the end my knee was saying it had done enough and we were a mile short of our original target for the day.;D
Hittisleigh on Sunday - if I'm sparedIn better circumstances, I would have recommended the Tom Cobley Tavern in Spreyton for a post or mid walk drink, especially if you are found of aged apple juice.
The routes vary between 9 and 14 km. It is door to door walking so I hope it is legal. Once I leave the village, the only people I meet are in tractors or cars.
On my modest 6.5km walk today from my front door I "met" dozens of people and had to criss cross the road to avoid them. If I had driven ten minutes to a more remote place I probably would have "met" 2 or 3 people. There is no mileage restriction ninthace, the guidelines say you can do your usual length of walk, run or bike ride.Ah the joys of urban living!

To Whitestone church. The lanes are coming into their finest this time of year. Hard on the feet but those hedge rows just about make up for it?
The church itself was closed, of course, but the churchyard was 'set in a spring carpet of primroses, violets and celandine, mellow with the passing of seven centuries'.
The quote from my copy of Arthur Mee's Devon printed in 1938 but still perfect for today.
With the wind in the trees sounding like waves on a distant pebble shore and a skylark singing I could have stayed for ever.
................ in the woods by the River Mole.
We are going to be a fit lot when this is done. Passed no end of folk I have never seen walking before on my way in and out of the village today, same yesterday. My average walk length is down a little bit to try stay local but my frequency of walking has nearly tripled.
It's an education to walk the lanes I had only ridden or driven previously. Every cloud as they say. :)
I have become amazingly adept at opening and closing gates with my walking poles too!

Had to Google Nuthatch. One to watch out for. :)
Spotted a Nuthatch
Late evening walk yesterday and spent a peaceful half hour watching swallows hawking over a field of sheep in the setting sun.The swallows had still not made it to my corner of Devon as of yesterday.
Hope they ate well before bed time as we had a light frost overnight.
The swallows had still not made it to my corner of Devon as of yesterday.
I saw the first 3 swallows on the 2MW near our house today - I obviously spoke too soon.
Not seen them here in SE Cornwall yet either. The Blue bells are coming through finally though. :)
See you have changed your ideas on cars Buzzy, I hope I have not been a bad influence on You. :)

No it was the revised Police guidelines. ;)
A weekend off for Mrs G . So we have been walking the local RoW again. We went off in search of Blue Bells today.
Ha Ha Glad to hear it.
I expected something must have changed as you didn't get blasted by Statler and Waldorf :)
Lovely photos by the way
Can't make my mind up where to walk today. The secret lake or the foreshore. If you know the secret, go to the lake. Otherwise for sure you should take the alternative route.
Someone make a decision for me :D O0
Short drive up to Bodmin moor today. What a perfect cool sunny day for a walk. I set off North with no real plan. Just walked all day, with a few short butty breaks. Ended up walking the full length of the moor up to Rough Tor and back. Just over 25 miles, with about a mile of accents. Absolutely wonderful days walking. Saw one family group, in the distance, near Brown Willy. Not another soul all day. O0
SECRET LAKE, off you go.
I love the idea of a mile of accents. See how many you can hear, that one's a Brummy, there's a Scouser I think, oh oh, just over there.. a Geordie!
Love the photo of the dandelion clocks, BuzyG. O0
I shall, after scrutinising the 50 page document released later today, hopefully be walking in the Cheviots.
Route yet to be decided but looking at heading out saturday afternoon, having a couple or three hours walking, sneaking in an overnighter and then continuing on a circular on the sunday. Not bothered about the Cheviot itself but would like to take in the Hen Hole, 3 sisters etc , am open to suggested routes.
Sounds good - anywhere special? Humbleton/Harehope by any chance? That was my last full walk before lockdown kicked in. I was out and about in Rothbury this morning - the wind out of the North was bracing!
Haughton Park, the banks of the Don and Murray Park both days this weekend. Yesterday was about 15 degrees C with some sun, clouds and rain. Today was about 3 degrees with hail, snow, wind and sun. The cold weather is heading south.Yes it's dropped to 12 degrees C from 20+ 0n Saturday, down here in Cornwall. Perfect walking weather. 8) Shame I'm stuck in working.
Yesterday, I saw a couple of mute swans, mallards, and a grey heron. Today we saw 2 roe deer, a tree creeper as well as the mallards and heron.
Edit: Here you go... By the time I had fumbled around for my camera a couple had noticed me. As soon as I started walking toward them again they upped and scarpered to higher ground. I have seen this herd before, but they have always been away before I got a decent photo. Nice to literally catch them napping. :)Oh dear
Just local parks and woods again, as we are still under lockdown in Scotland. Ther were more people about last weekend and during the week.6 miles today in Haughton Park and along the Don. Today I did a new stretch of the river with an indistinct path, as the park was quite busy. I then walked over Montgarrie bridge into the village and turned left over Essat Burn up the hill to Tullynessle on the road. I then backtracked to the park and back along the river. My normal route was cut short due to a sheep on the path between the river and a barb wire topped fence. I didn’t want to panic the sheep, so turned around. The field behind the fence contained ewes and lambs (who had grown massively in a week) and a mixture of different coloured cows. On of these, on spotting me, got up and started to stare at me as I walked past. It then raised a hoof and dragged it several times on the ground, as if it was looking to charge. Fortunately, there was a lowest fence between us. I soon had to go back past it again due to the sheep.
I saw the entire herd of Roe deer, that roam the South west boundaries of Bodmin moor, on my long walk last weekend. Surprisingly, on the open moor, I actually spotted them some time before they spotted me. I will upload a picture.
Lovely to see and great to get such good pics. But roe deer are seldom in herds and are really quite small and dainty. I think these are Red deer.
At first I thought fallow deer, (the melanistic (dark/black) not dappled ones) of which there are large numbers in Devon but the rump markings are not right.
Have a google and see what you think

Red deer are a lot larger and stockier than roe deer. Roe deer do go in herds as we had a herd of 8 ( or bevy as its called). Red deer tend to be a lot larger herd. You can tell the difference by the size of them and their tails. Where I live we also have munkjac deer they are the small ones. I've never seen any wild fallow deer yet but come across Roe deer regular and Red deer up on the moors. At night I can hear the Muncjac deer barking in the woods.
I was wondering about that myself. Roe Deer prefer woodland too.
You have to put it in yourselfby just typing in TR before the title?
Great walk today. I set off from Two bridges and walked to Yes tor via East Dart waterfall and Hanging Stone hill, popping across the peat to visit the Ted Hughes Memorial near by.. Returning via Fur tor and Beardown tors. 23 miles in all. The moor is so good underfoot right now, You can simply walk across the peat bogs, which are dry but still nice and soft underfoot. The grasslands though are like concrete. Now that sounds like a fun day out!
Now that sounds like a fun day out!
I don't normally bother, but after your comment and as I enjoyed it so much, I have plotted and published the route on OSMaps. Though I appear to have runn out of space for words half way back LoL.

Interesting. I have walked 3/4 of that route at one time or another but never all at once. That is quite a bit of off piste which takes it out of the legs. Chapeau!
I'm hoping to go on a short walk up North York moors this weekend in between the torrential rain we have had. Start at Captain Cooks and head down to kildale. I've got my new rescue dog so I can over walk him. Therefore I have to build him up slowly so I'm going back over all short 5 milers for now.
Thank you. So many dogs have ended up in rescues. I adopted another one. He's beautiful but hard work.
Good luck with the rescue dog. :)

There have been many evenings recently when I've looked over at the photos on the wall and wised they were still with me.
Lovely dogs - bet they pull! The are great going up a hill quite handy. Not bad coming down unless there is a grouse. Great all weathers but not in the heat. I prefer cooler days for a hike. I went for my walk today very foggy. I've never seen so many people out.
Lovely up on Dartmoor today. The legs are shot from much jogging on Bodmin moor the past week, so it was a short walk up to Great Links tor, where I just lay and enjoyed the sun for two hours, before bimbling back down via Hare tor. 8 miles all told.It looked a bit black over the north of the moor this pm so we have it a miss and stayed between the moors. There was lightning in the pm forecast too but I ended up carrying my jacket for nothing.

Dartmoor was kicking off another nice big cumulus grobulus today while we were out walking. It kept trying to turn itself into a thunderstorm but in its enthusiasm it would overdevelop, shut itself down for a short while and then start again. It's been lovely down here in Saltash today. O0 Shame I have only just finished work. ::)
I really must give this retirement thing a go one day. ;)
I'm heading out at 8pm for a summer soltice climb up the hills to watch the sunset tonight. I was going to get up early tomorrow for sunrise but rain is forecast at 5am.Good luck with the sunset - no chance here as the clouds have crept in from the west.
Have a good wild camp Richard :)
If you have to bail, it won't be far to go!
Bail? What do you take me for? ;)
Enjoyed it, thanks, despite a LOT of rain hammering on the flysheet. Pleased to say that the cheapo tent, which is getting on in years, didn't let in a drop. And it was great crawling out of the sleeping bag straight into the kitchen for tea and toast! :D
Buzzards/birds of pray are awesome creatures Mel, cats of the sky I can watch them hunting for hours. There must be thousands of them in Cornwall these days. Very different to thirty years ago, when they were a rare sight. O0
Can she fly unaided though. It;s an important distinction. ;)
I'm married to a bird of pray. My wife's a vicar. She is, indeed, awesome! O0
Should that not be in the weak joke thread.
I'm married to a bird of pray. My wife's a vicar. She is, indeed, awesome!
Walking this coming weekend?
..as little as possible given the dreadful forecast. :(
Week in the Lakes so just what I was expecting. O0
It is fine at the moment at home and we managed to get a dry walk in Gelt Woods to let Squeaky have a run aboot.
We have dodged most of it down here in Cornwall. A bit grey and mizzly for a few hours today but mostly dry and tomorrow looks pretty decent.
Lucky you - it stopped for about an hour today - heavy rain replaced by heavy overcast for a short while. But back to the rain now. Driveway drain blocked and we have a small lagoon at the front of the house.
In fact I have walked a grand total of one mile today, and even Tess was glad when I said 'Let's go back'.

That looks very impressive, I'll put it on my list of walks once I'm able.... managed less than 1/2 a mile yesterday and had to 'retire hurt'.
Did the circular route over the moors from osmotherley - a little over 11 miles. Felt like I was dying the last mile haha I’m still a newbie.I will always remember my first walk after I stopped surfing and decide I was taking up walking again to filll the hole.
Usual route for me tomorrow, leaving home at Newquay at 530am to walk swcp in the cool with the poor dog, going as far as i can, aiming at Padstow, before calling the cavalry to come and collect early aftrnoon.
Hartsop above How, Hart Crag, Dove Crag , Little Hart Crag and High Hartsop Dodd from Cow Bridge
Thanks Richard. i can look down on Dovedale and also Deepdale which if I was forced to choose I prefer ( probably because it's a little longer )
Enjoy it Karl - A good round - but you are missing beautiful Dovedale!
Thanks Richard. i can look down on Dovedale and also Deepdale which if I was forced to choose I prefer ( probably because it's a little longer )
You might be able to tire Tess out letting her run free on the sand
First time I've ever written this word...
...we're going Jeffing around the marshes south of the Swale, namely Cleve Marshes, Graveney Marshes and Nagden Marshes. :)
First time I've ever written this word...I'm sometimes effing and jeffing up steep hills, is that the same?

Up with Cornwallcoastpathdweller and driving down to Trewavas head for a spot of rock climbing AM, then may be a walk on Bodmin moor on the Way home, if I have any steam left.First place I ever went climbing and the last place as well.
Out on Bodmin moor today. Great to meet up and walk with cornwallcoastpathdweller. The weather was kind to us. Well after you stood in the rain while I put my gaiters on it was. ;D Not sure I quite sold the idea of boots and gaiters. More the idea of staying off Bodmin moor in damp conditions.
Any way a good days walking and chatting. 12 miles and 580m up and down, by my measure.
SWCP next time and hopefully Mel can make it too O0
Nowhere for me today, set the alarm for a 6am 'usual' route along the cliff path but decided against it and went back to sleep. Furthest i went today was around the garden with the lawnmower - need to have a word with myself!I wise choice, I see a chunk of cliff near to you is now on the beach since Friday. The chap walking his dog. Will be in need of new undies. :o
4 mile walk from Rothbury up to Lordenshaws Iron Age hillfort. Dry and sunny with a light breeze and the moorland turning purple as the heather comes into bloom.Nice.

Yes, another who has noticed the heather flourishing to it's finest purple in the past week or so. O0

Wowzer they had a lucky escape there. Been a few nearby falls this year thanks to all the dry April weather then subsequent rain, amazing that people manage to get those sorts of things on video - often wonder how long they sat there waiting.
Will sort a walk in a few weeks along the swcp in the area if anybody is interested, once im back from the midlands.
I walked today over the South Downs from Denton on the outskirts of Newhaven, via Beddingham Hill and Glynde, to Lewes. Masses of wild flowers on the chalk grassland. A glorious summer's day on the downs and I was able to enjoy much of it in solitude :)
That photo of Watern Tor is very striking, BuzyG - like the way the light and shadows throw the horizontal cracks into relief.
Pillar by a roundabout route for my family and I - parked about half way down Wast Water and headed up the beautiful remote valley of Nether Beck to Scoat Tarn, before gaining the ridge between Red Pike and Scoat Fell, then along the ridge up and over Pillar, returning via Black Sail Pass. Visibility was exceptional - could see Blackpool Tower, Clwyd Hills, Snowdonia, Isle of Man, Mull of Galloway, Merrick and surrounding hills, Criffel and on into the hills beyond Moffat. We certainly dodged the ants crawling up and down the Scafell Pike path - we didn't meet a soul until we were nearing Scoat Tarn.Sounds like you had a great day Richard. :) The Ennerdale and Wasdale fells were local to me years ago, I could walk to Pillar from home and back, although it was a long day. PS The chippy at Greenodd used to be the public toilets before our useless council closed them to save money. The new owners have made a great success of it. O0
Finished late so we stopped off for fish and chips in Greenodd on our way home. :smiley6600:
Edit - police had been having a field day slapping parking fines on the windscreens of cars badly parked on the Wasdale Head road.

I promised Mrs N that there would only be one climb today - I left out that it would be for 3/4s of the walk :)
I always say that on average the walk is flat. I have also been heard to say that half of the walk is downhill. :)
Happily folks never seem to wise up to that one. O0

I am beginning to wonder if I have created a monster.;D
For our own amusement I keep a spreadsheet cum diary of our walks during the year. During the week I let slip to Mrs N that she was not far off 700 miles for the year which, thanks to Covid-19, was a personal best. She came to walking late, when she finallly decided I could not always be trusted out on my own, so she had better keep an eye on me. Previously she has never walked more that 690 miles in the year and I have always been a fair way ahead but this year I only have a 65 mile lead.
The next thing I know she insists that, with a bit of effort, she could crack 700 miles by Sunday so today we have been out doing a circular walk using the Two Moors Way and now she is at 701 miles and a bit. Is she happy? No! Now she has aspirations to do 1000 miles by the end of the year so we are off again tomorrow for another Two Moors Way based loop. ::)
I wonder if there is some sort of support group I can get in touch with?

O0 Does Tess have a thing about climbing on cairns or do you get her to pose?
Tier 3 walk on the Sefton coast path. Bit flat in comparison to my normal walks.
Treyarnon bay to Newquay for me this afternoon in the most glorious sunshine. 12 miles in 3 hours dead.
Poor dog hasnt got off his bed since, needs to up his game O0
Dare I ask where the Sefton coast path starts and finishes. I'm guessing I may have walked most, if not all of it. But have never heard of it. :o
That is mighty quick. I'm assuming you jogged. O0
Or the dog towed you. ;)
It starts in Waterloo, North Liverpool and ends in Crossens, just north of Southport. I walked Crosby to Freshfield and back today, as not allowed on public transport.
Was on a bit of a mission to keep away from everybody, the most people ive seen on the path ever.
Still have to sort out our little jaunt, been so hectic the last couple of months just havent been able.
Thanks, though I have lived in Cornwall nearly 30 years. I was born in Exeter road Bootle. Started school in Waterloo by the five lamps. Finished School in Crosby Manor Road and buried my mum in Southport, just last year. So as you can imagine. I know the area reasonably well. I have certainly walked all of the coast at some time or other. Altcar camp used to get in the way at hightown as I recall. Intrigued that there is an official path.
Lovely shots, pups look so vulnerable.
Continue to follow your walks, on maps around Shetland... was there a boat involved?
There are two Uyea Isles, this one is at North Roe the other is in Unst.
The Unst one needs a boat this one is tidal, it is an 11.5 mile round trip from the Main road.
I followed a hill road ( A rare thing here in Shetland). I didn't go onto the island today as the tide was still up and the sand Bar was covered./quote
Aha I'm enjoying hunting around the Shetlands, I found the correct Uyea! Interesting tale about the two girls from the other Uyea Isle being blown across to Norway!
That area is still used for military training today but if I told you what for, I would have to kill you and eat you. 😉
Rough Tor is still on my shopping list - it is just a bit too far for a normal trip
Just back from first post pleurisy walk, a very gentle stroll from Tarn Hows car park to Black Crags and back, in the rain. Magic to be out after many relapses.Good to hear...enjoy ! O0
Cheers Karl, you not out camping in this glorious weather?Nope..fair weather camper me :D Spent a nice few minutes this morning cleaning and counting my tent pegs :-[
Beach walk this morning for some variety from the hills. Blyth beach to Seaton Sluice, not too far but great stuff, and we didn't get wet O0Walked that route a couple of times, first time when Tall Ships were in Blyth, parked in Seaton Sluice and walked along lovely sandy beach to Blyth and back.
Flock of 400 golden plover over the dunes
Thanks all for the messages. Mrs G feeling OK this morning,
........I lost the path and ended up climbing through the undergrowth from the river to the top of Bench tor. I will try not to do that again, Tis very steep indeed through clitter and brambles. ;D
For those of us in Tier 4 it'll be back to walking round the block or around the local rec this weekend :( .
Lovely pic of Sandy Hole Pass, BuzyG.The whole of Scotland will be in Tier 4 from Boxing Day for at least 3 weeks.
Commiserations to everyone in tier 4. I suspect that will be all of us in the New Year :(
Looking at the rate of increase in Cornwall the past few days, we will be moving from tire 1 to tier 4 before you know it. I just don't get why people suddenly need to socialise just because of a date in the calendar. It's utter stupidity. I fear this current wave is going to kill far more people than the first one did. Hope I'm wrong there.
........................... the tickles of fresh water frozen down to the sea. Great when the sun came out with all the Pinkfoot geese calling overhead.
Coastal walk up the length of Druridge Bay in Northumberland. Hard frost overnight with frost all over the beach and the tickles of fresh water frozen down to the sea. Great when the sun came out with all the Pinkfoot geese calling overhead.
Fabulous walk from Rosthwaite yesterday, up Eagle Crag and Sergeant's Crag and then up to High Raise, before descending to Langstrath and back to Rosthwaite via Stonethwaite. Accompanies by the nimble photonut of this parish, who was very patient as my lungs are still adjusting to being asked to climb hills! I'll put a few piccies up when I get a chance.
Ashclyst Forest. A forest owned by the NT between Exeter and Cullompton. Disappointing - the majority of the paths had been trashed by donkey wallopers! >:(
And the OS map of it is nearly useless!
First time I got round to it today. Not sure I will go again unless the glue factories go on to overtime. I have never seen an area with so many paths damaged by horse riders. The daft thing is most of the paths were wide enough to ride on one side and for walkers to use the other but no, the entire width was churned. In worse weather they would have been impassable. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike horses but I prefer them with chips.
I know Ashclyst well as I used to use it almost daily for a couple of years for nordic walking. Maybe we crossed paths and said hello??
Not been up there about 4 months now though....
Striding Edge, Swirral Edge, Catstycam - a family adventure, the four of us + Tess.
Wonderful. Just wonderful.

Looks like a perfect day Richard. O0
Still Taking in easy on my leg here.
That’s an absolutely classic route, and for good reason. Something for everyone.
Good day for it, by the looks of things.
Yes, it is THE classic Lake District scrambling route. Not too many people on it either - We have lockdown to thank for something, I suppose, as it must be a nightmare on a busy day. We got an early start, and timed it well - it snowed during the last half mile back to the car.
Off to the Quantocks for a few days :)
This weekend I am going to Snowdonia and will climb the mount Snowdon. Feeling super excited O0Start really early if you are going to need a parking place. Which route?
A 34.2 mile circuit to the south of Canterbury (although it'll probably end up being more!).
Almost entirely within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. :)
Climbed the Snowdon, it was amazing experience, weather was sunny and warm in the trail, but up in the summit it was snowing. I will make a blogpost about this next week.As promised, I would love to hear your feedback. Feel free to leave a comment on the post and link your blog if you like.

Today I think I'm going to saunter along the river in Totnes, hopefully with my teenage daughter. The bluebells on the slope between Holwell Lawn and Becka Brook were looking good on Wednesday. At Emsworthy and Holwell Lawn itself they weren't fully out yet and perhaps not so good as other years, possibly a combination of being more exposed, firstly to the cold and dry April followed by May's drenchings.
Tomorrow I'm heading to Dartmoor, I had a different route planned, but another local photographer said that the bluebells are up in a specific place, so I'm heading there instead, so I'm planning a circuit in that area that will bag a couple of tors I've not been on as well.

Epic 0.86 mile walk along the banks of the River Severn to see the swans near English Bridge. Mammy and 4 little grey fluffballs :smitten:
From Lane End via Ger Tor, and Great Links and back along the Rattlebrook, boulder hopping through Tavy Cleave.
Great route Jac.Living in Exeter I tend to walk the eastern side of the moor and am usually with Plymouth ramblers.
I can't believe we have never bumped into one another up on the moor. I walk that area so regularly.
A lovely 6am Sunday walk Saddle Tor-Holwell Tor-Hound Tor-Bell Tor-Bonehill Rocks-Top Tor-Rippon Tor and back to Saddle car park. 7 miles and great views. This is Holwell looking over to Greator rocks.
Enjoy your hiking scrambledlegs O0 O0 . It's gonna to be an amazing weather!
Thank you :) We are taking the BIG tent!!! This way I know it's proper showers with soap, toothbrush and everything.
Sounds like a great plan O0 , I liked your blog btw, fantastic pictures 8)
Just back from a very early start, Y Gribin to Glyder Fawr, the clouds never cleared ( they never do on the Glyders in my experience). Really enjoyed Gribin, lovely scramble along the ridge, shame there were no views. Never seen the place so busy, even at 8 am on the summit of G Fawr there was a family.Sorry to rub it in, but what a difference a day makes. I was in the Glyderau yesterday.

Might be right up your street if you fancy a visit to the West Country. ;)
That does sound interesting Buzy, thanks. O0
My wife and I are really keen to spend a week in Cornwall (hopefully around September). We binge-watched the whole of Poldark and loved the landscape. Then, by coincidence, we discovered that a YouTube channel we follow (Run4Adventure with Loyd Purvis) is based in the same area and it looks an amazing place to do some trail-runs.
For a moment, I wondered if Chagford might be somewhere in the west of Cornwall, but sadly it's a long way away. Oh well, I'm sure we'll come back to Dartmoor before too long - thanks for the thought. :)
Looks great and I see Damian Hall is leading the way. Sadly, we can't make August - perhaps another time. We're still keen on a week in Cornwall this autumn though... :)
If it's West Cornwall then there is only one you realy need to look at Dave. The Rat Run.

Ha ha ha, nice wheels btw :)
Fantastic. Love those.
Thx, it was a charity run organised by a car forum I'm on. I took Zedward, as he was known, all the way down to lands and many other places on route. Some one else took him up Snowdon I think and another to the top of the tower on the Seven Bridge.

That sounds interesting Richard, I hope it goes ahead. Look forward to reading your report.I got a soaking this morning whilst walking the dog, and thunderstorms were forecast, so I wimped out. M wife is made of sterner stuff though and has gone ahead, with my eldest son taking my place. Unfortunately, the rain has just re-started.
Ticked off Bonehill Rocks, Honeybag Tor, Chinkwell Tor and Bell Tor today. The weather was unpredictable and there was only one point where I thought I might have to cut things short, however as I was slowly making my way back down Honeybag it cleared up again, so I carried on.
Hope the niggle improves BuzyG.Thx, my left calf again, after I ran along the leat path and back on Friday. Will I ever learn that I'm not 21 still. ::) Not a bad pull like last time, just need to give it few days hopefully.
Caldbeck fells for me today, High Pike to Great Calva and back to Carrock fell. Lovely breeze blowing, made it a perfect sunny hill day.
I've just posted a link in the news section - warnings of very wet weather over the next couple of days and several flood warnings in Cumbria. Guess you'll be ok down near the coast Richard? Unless the sea gets full of course. Hopefully things won't get too serious. We have an night navigation exercise on Dartmoor tomorrow evening. That should be fun. :o My kit is barley dry from Sunday. ;D
Happy 60th, BuzyG. :)Thanks Richard it was a good day. :)
Lovely pics Richard and Mel.
Clough Head an under rated hill in both how nice it is and how tough a walk up.

Lovely coppery tree Mel.
Have you walked the Mell fells Mel?
Admit it Paul, the real reason there's no pics is because you didn't leave the pub ;D
I had a good stomp on Dartmoor today, I climbed Hookney Tor and then carried on along the ridge to Hameldown Tor and Hameldown Beacon. Glorious sunshine, but the wind was very chilly.Did you call in to see uncle Tom Cobley. ;)
It's looking pretty wintry on the hills this coming weekend - windchill on Skiddaw at -16!, and snow. Whoo hoo.
Just a local morning stroll on Saturday, with a mix of country lanes, farm tracks and muddy paths.I've enjoyed walking in the areas you've mentioned, but I haven't been there since Covid sadly. I mostly parked by Harty Ferry at Oare.

I've enjoyed walking in the areas you've mentioned, but I haven't been there since Covid sadly. I mostly parked by Harty Ferry at Oare.I walk out to Harty Ferry fairly regularly (I just wish there was still a ferry operating to get to Sheppey). If you've not been out there recently, note the car park now has a charge.

Local dog walks for me - working yesterday and visitors last night, so being the perfect host. Looks like I may get Tuesday for a day in t'hills.Forecast good for Tuesday :)
Itching to get up onto Dartmoor over the weekend, I'm feeling the urge to clamber up a tor.
Have a good one. I"m leading our ramblers group, on a merry trek from the Dartmoor in car park 10 am Sunday. Always welcome to join us.
I got all the way up to Bellever on Saturday afternoon only to discover that not only had I left my water bottle at home, but also my water filter bladder, so I drove back home to sulk and then got called into work. Thank you for the invite, although Sunday wasn't much better for me either with too many boring things that needed my attention. I'm re-attempting next weekend or during the week.
Dramatic indeed, Briony. Was that photo earlier today?
Have you walked the Seven Sisters, a bit further west?
I was supposed to hiking to High Willhays and Yes Tor on Saturday with a group of people, but woke up with a horrible sore throat this morning, so have had to postpone :(
Family walk St Sunday Crag and Grisedale Tarn today - fabulous. 8)
I was surprised how big Grisedale tarn was, when I saw it for the first time last month. Enjoyed a sheltered spot behind a big bolder, for my lunch spot there. I should probably learn to read a map. ;D
Bitterly Cold Carnedd llewelyn conquered this afternoon.
I went fully prepared, expecting the windchill to be parky, and i wasn't disappointed.
Clear blue skies, and decent visibility, but the forecast for next week, is for a significant drop in temperatures, with possible SNOW !!!!!!!!, certainly felt cold enough for sleet, if it had rained, but no signs of rain.
The ground underneath, was pretty dry, an indication of the very settled weather over the last fortnight, but im glad i had the sense to take the necessary kit, as it was needed.

Lovely pics Patrick . . .
Lovely pics Patrick and yes what an amazing weekend O0 Any chance of you doing a full TR? It looks stunning :)Thanks, April. I'm not sure its really worth a full trip report - i think you've already seen the highlights! I'll bear it in mind next time we do a walk, though - I enjoyed your account of your High Street trip in the same glorious weather last weekend.
Sgurr na Feartaig was our destination for the weekend, for a wild camp on the plateau. Stunning weather, wasn't it?Wow! so beautiful pictures!

A grand location for your weekend with fine images.....I had to look at my notes for hills to get to the location. :) Well it was some 35 years ago when I took the train to Achnashellach then over Feartaig to stay at the Bhearnais Bothy for a couple of nights that gives access to a number of fine hills. Eventually after a stay at Maol Bhuidhe and a couple of camps to get out from the hills at Glen Affric.Ah, coming through to Affric sounds a fine route, and some great bothies. I've done something loosely similar in reverse, doing a quick "coast to coast" form Muir of Ord to Strathcarron through Glen Orrin, Glen Fhiodhaig and the Bhealach Bhearnais. Makes a nice route - from one rail station to another, and walkable over three days...
I went a walk in the Low Weald of Sussex today, from Woodmancote Church to Henfield via Albourne Church. A very pretty walk in gently undulating countryside with beautiful woodlands and fine views of the line of the South Downs in the distance. There were lots of celandines and quite a few cuckoo flowers, and bluebells and stitchwort are coming into bloom. I passed an extensive vineyard, which had a tall gate to prevent deer getting in. Fine and sunny - a lovely spring day.
I m doing 10 miles a day training up for Cleveland Way again but as a keen birdwatcher its migration time and the migrants are pouring in from Africa this month . Exciting times hearing the first migrants .Chiffchaffs have been in UK for the last 2 weeks but yesterday my first Willow Warbler was heard along with Little Ringed Plover and Blackcap. So today its a long walk just birding , expecting to see Sand Martins , maybe an early Swallow and its time a Whitethroat or Lesser Whitethroat appeared. We spotted a Swallow on higher White for, Dartmoor, yesterday.
Probably won't go far over the Easter weekend.
The bluebells in our garden flowered 4 days ago, the bluebells in the banks along the lanes came out about the same time but the wood bluebells are way off yet.
. . . A very pretty walk, with beautiful ghyll woodlands with an abundance of bluebells and wild garlic. . . Fine and sunny - a lovely spring day.
Sounds good DG- glad you enjoyed it :)
Gardening and plant nursery for me today. But heading off to north-east Wales tomorrow for a day hill-walking.
Lovely 8 mile walk to Brimham Rocks from Pateley Bridge today :)
Very nice Karl. Are you getting some good walks in?Yes Richard, Slovenia is brilliant superb walking just chilling with a beet at a high Alpine hut :)
Dartmoor- Ivybridge up to Piles Copse for a wild swim then loop round to Buckfastleigh.
.... few beers in the Coledale Inn. Perfect.
I walked by the Royal Military Canal from Cliff End to Winchelsea today. ...
Tavy Cleave & Fur Tor.
Your trip sounds great, fit old bird, do you get any hassle or funny looks car camping in towns?
Hi FOB
do you have any tips for the equipment needed for a 2-3-4 day trip? I have a Golf hatch back & with the passenger seat fully forward I can fit in a 180 X 60 CM SIM. I would be looking at parking up (paid or free) & walking a clockwise route, sleep, anticlockwise route or visa versa. Thanks
Difficult to get out of Portsmouth from today until Sunday, we have a big pop concert here. I'm going to have a go though, I'm going to jump on the number 8 bus tomorrow to get me to the South Downs Way and Queen Elizabeth Country park.
Enjoying a peaceful wild camp on top of Great How above Eskdale. Will probably walk to Langdale tomorrow. Forecast good.
Black Hill on Sunday from Fernworthy Reservoir car park.
That's an unusual destination for a walk. Any particular reason
Saw it a couple of weeks ago from Fur Tor, the views from it are supposed to be really good. We'll take in Grey Wethers & Sitaford Tor on the way
It was hellish. ;)
Sounds awful :D
Hope it was warm enough for a dip in the tarn O0
I walked on the South Downs today from Findon Valley to Shoreham, taking in Cissbury Ring, Lancing Ring and a short stretch of the river Adur. Panoramic views. The brambles are laden with blackberries - masses of them :)
Have you heard anything about the Plume of Feathers re-opening? The Prince of Wales must be making a fortune.
High Street from Mardale by the rough Crag ridge and back down over Kidsty Pike. Bit dull and rainy at times but didn't spoil one of my favourite routes
Never seen Haweswater so low :o
A few seen at long range down in Riggindale but not as many as I've seen before :(
Any deer around? A group of stags seen in Swindale today.
Pike o'Blisco and Cold Pike. Now moderately [censored] in the ODG after beer, wine, food and music. Happy as a pig in .....
Censored word may imply I am not entirely sober.
Off on my jollies - hoping to be walking in the Greater Kruger bush,
Off on my jollies - hoping to be walking in the Greater Kruger bush,O0 Enjoy yourself, and take lots of photos.
I am currently back in Great Langdale for an extended weekend.
A very brief jaunt to Blea Rigg yesterday followed by a grand old Langdale round of seven fells today (Cold Pike, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, Esk Pike, Great End, Allen Crags, Rossett Pike). I will write a TR when I get back.
Lovely 7 mile misty, autumnal walk today - along Pocklington canal with my walking group. It was very eerie standing for the 2 minutes’ silence at 11am in the middle of nowhere. Even the birds were quiet.
Full TR when I get back.
. . . Bessyboot . . . a truly horrible descent of Big Stanger Gill path - a fix the fells slip fest . . .
Wonderful walk up Nether Beck onto Haycock and along to Caw Fell - the last Wainwright of my third round. By cracky it was chilly up there, passed one runner and one walker all day. Was going to stay up and go across to Middle Fell but the lure of getting out of the wind and hail pulled me back down the way I came. Cracking day. Did I mention it was chilly?
Sounds good - Nether Beck flows down a wonderful valley. I've pondered on the name of the valley - possibly Bowderdale, as that is the name of the farm at the foot of Nether Beck and Over Beck. Would love to find out.
PS - was it a bit chilly up there? :D
PPS - Congratulations O0
(not that I am at all interested in all this Wainwright bagging nonsense, of course)
First camp of the year for me last night..
very dodgy underfoot...
After my experience on the Old Man last year, I was glad of my microcrampons!
I don't think we would ( or could ) have carried on without Microspikes. Lots of people turned back and those that didn't were really struggling :o
Love the Yorkshire Sculpture park - first went in 1983 with a girl I was courting back in the day. Been once since and it had changed quite a bit, I would love to go back when I get a chance.
Wet 50 mph winds and pitch black before we got of the ridge. A perfect mountain day.
We commenced the Essex Way, 82 miles from Epping to Harwich and will walk it in stageThe Essex way has never been well served by public transport. When I walked it in the 1970s with my father, my mother dropped us off at the start and picked us up at the end of the day. Being resident in Essex she would go home in the intervening time.
We are struggling with sensible public transport returns to our start point
Just been on the Loch Morlich webcam - what a gorgeous day!

My wife is running the Brighton Marathon tomorrow.
That is a canny trip! What sort of mpg are you expecting from your motorhome?
Good luck with the adventure... and the weather!
Good luck Fred O0
Today I parked at Conisbrough. Had a look at the castle, then followed the river to Sprotbrough. Came back on the Trans Pennine Trail on the other side. Under, and over the top of the viaduct. Lovely day out. 7 miles.I really must visit Conisbrough Castle, never been. Sprotbrough gorge is lovely.
ilona
Thanks Richard. She beat her previous best by 19 minutes! :)

Escaped the crowds though, I dread to think what the Lakeland Fells were like today.I don't know about the Lakes but my son sent me a picture this afternoon of the queue on the top of Pen y Fan waiting for a summit photo.

I thought we did alright with the navigation, given the amount of gadgets, maps, guide books and backups of backups we carried.
Oh, you mean Friday.... :-X
;D
Just had a great weekend in the lakes, my suggestion of a weekender was hijacked by Mel :)
Saturday was Rannerdale, Whiteless Pike, Wandope and Gasgale Gill - which was a real sting in the tail and not the easy stroll down a valley we were expecting, the path having been destroyed in places by storm damage. Didn't put us off though; we're planning to use the Gill as an ascent route so Mel can bag Grasmoor. Perfect weather all day, some cloud on distant tops and it looked like Wasdale was under fog going by the cloud spilling over Beck Head.
Blinking well nowhere, having to wait in for an important builders visit. No sign of him today so looks like tomorrow is a day sitting in the back garden.

Nowhere this weekend for me, am resting up and prepping for another long journey upto Scotland to have another walk of The Great Glen Way starting Thursday next week.
Loved it so much last time, despite the 1400 mile trip, me and Mrs DD are going back for another bash!
On Saturday I went out with some people from work as a colleague is leaving.
There were a lot of 'refreshment stops' on route but between 12.00 noon and 21.30 we walked a grand total of 5.5 miles down a canal towpath. You should have heard some of the moaning about how far it was.
I sometimes forget that we are all the strange ones for actually going out walking while, to so many other people, it is an absolute anathema.
Anybody know a walk from baitings dam, calderdale? I have an idea for an eight miler for Sunday, which would be a long one by my standards.
I walked from Cliff End to Hastings today. A spectacular coastal walk, with towering rugged sandstone cliffs interspersed with deep wooded ravines. There's a lot of steep ascent and descent. A very enjoyable walk with stunning views. Hot and sunny :)
Would like to see some photos from your part of the world, Dovegirl.
Cranmere Pool from Meldon, going via Black a Tor Copse & Lints Tor. Back via High Willhays & Yes Tor.
Lovely varied 6.5 mile walk up on Ilkley Moor on Sunday. Up past White Wells.A super mooch . O0
I walked today from Eridge Green to Eridge Station, taking in the hamlet of Motts Mill and some stretches of the High Weald Landscape Trail and Sussex Border Path. Wondrous ghyll woodlands, fantastical trees, a very deeply sunken lane, oast houses. A glorious walk in beautiful countryside. One of my favourite areas for walking. Is there much weald left? Never walked in the south of England but I have got a couple of books dating back fifty years or so with colour photos of the UK, that area sounds nice, but I wonder how much is still not built on.

There's actually quite a bit of The Weald that's not built on.
My Dad this weekend went on a sponsored walk to raise money for the Alzheimers Society. As he was sat on a bench waiting to start he got talking to the man next to him who said that his daughter was doing the walk but he wasn't as he was 58! My 86 year old Dad then went on the walk.
Postbridge to Willsworthy carpark via Fur Tor & Tavy Cleave
First proper hiking trip after my hip op Thursday to Sunday. Going to the Lake District, nothing much set in stone apart from Saturday being a walk up to Great Bourne, Starling Dodd and Red Pike from Ennerdale.Nice walk to get back into the swing of things O0
Nice walk to get back into the swing of things O0Thanks Karl. It's ages since I was out anywhere near Ennerdale so it feels long overdue, I suspect it's 5 years.
Hope everything goes ok :)
An enjoyable 12 mile Littondale/Wharfedale round yesterday, we managed to incorporate a pint in The Buck (Buckden) and The Fox And Hounds (Starbotton). Would have visited The Queens Arms in Litton and The Falcon in Arncliffe too, but the former was shut (we were rather early for the former, and a bit late for the latter, given that we had to drive home).Hope you are posting pictures... Wonderful area.
Hope you are posting pictures... Wonderful area.
Nice walk from Fur Tor to Willsworthy via Fur Tor & Tavy Cleave, sad to see grafitti on the boulders.
I walked in Friston Forest today, which is on the South Downs between Seaford and Eastbourne. Beautiful autumnal colours. A sunny, golden autumn day - a welcome change from all the recent wet weather.Walked not too far from you in Lullington Heath but in the early morning. I love it because it is so peaceful at that time of day. Mind you my wife isn't too impressed when I fall asleep later in the chair.
Nice walk through part of the Abel Tasman National Park :)
South Island NZ
I've got the T-shirt! Took us about 6 hours - never saw a thing for the middle part though - but we smelt it!
That's a long walk. O0
Over on North island our son is walking around mount Doom over Christmas.

Short walk along the flood defences at Stone Creek/Cherry Cobb Sands. Saw 2 short eared owls :)
I'm staying at Black Sail Hut on Saturday night with my stepson. I've also booked the Wasdale Head Inn for Friday night.
Not entirely decided on walks but Friday is likely to be Miterdale, Whin Rigg and Illgill Head.
Saturday will obviously involve walking to the YH and Sunday walking back to the car in Wasdale but I haven't settled on either route yet.
On Sunday I'm favouring walking to the head of Ennerdale and Windy Gap for starters.
Ooh, I do fancy staying in the Black Sail sometime, but have been put off by the price (£1000 for a private room that sleeps 4). Enjoy your stay.
Whitby yesterday:
Your hair will stand on end when you hear that we are paying £220 for a 4 bed room for 1 night. And there are only 3 of us. My stepson and his mate thought it was a bit pricey so muggins has offered to step in and pay £110 while they'll pay £55 each. That does include an all you can eat breakfast but I don't think I can get that many sausages down me.

As for getting there, I do recommend following Nether Beck, a lovely valley that leads you onwards up into the hills. Photos here - https://wildaboutwalking.wordpress.com/lake-district/pillar-the-quiet-way/ (https://wildaboutwalking.wordpress.com/lake-district/pillar-the-quiet-way/)

Nice photos of the Trent, Ilona.
It's actually quite wide there, as it meets the Ouse. It gets narrower as it goes inland. The barges that go up and down delivering to the ports have to time it just right, to suit the tides. One got stuck on a sandbank the other day and had to wait until the water had lifted it off the bottom. It's a pity that the path does not go all the way around to the Humber Bridge. There is a break in it between Winteringham and South Ferriby. I think there are plans to join it up.

A new local walk for me yesterday... No pictures but I saw yellowhammers, curlew, egrets and a deer.
Always nice to find somewhere new on your doorstep.
Haven't seen a yellowhammer for decades!
I'll be walking around Manchester on Sunday. (https://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/smiley.gif)
I've never been to Manchester before. My wife is doing the marathon and my plan is to walk to various points on the course and cheer her on as she runs past. The marathon route looks to be very convoluted and so planning my route will be a challenge!
...No glorious mud on this one! :)
I did a circular walk from the picturesque village of Mayfield in the High Weald of East Sussex today, a walk that was very much up hill and down dale. It was so beautiful, with fine views and amazing, enchanting ghyll woodlands. Lots of bluebells, and the wild garlic is already coming into flower. A glorious spring day.Sounds nice. Dare I ask if you ever take any pictures?
Sounds nice. Dare I ask if you ever take any pictures?
Nice photos of an interesting landscape, Mel.Best avoided, full of mud and yetis ;D
Yorkshire Wolds? I don't know the area at all.
