Simplest GPS self-rescue sought.
« on: 21:16:59, 10/08/17 »
I often use multi-page GPS track printouts made by others together with compass readings to follow the route. I also get lost about once a day.

I would like to hold the GPX file of the route on my Android smartphone and only when I get lost, use the smartphone to help me find the route again. I have so far only experimented with the GPX Viewer app which doesn't seem to show my location properly.

Can anyone recommend an Androis app which would allow this sort of use?

I would recommend Viewranger.  Using its 1:25k maps you can plot your route beforehand, then either follow it, creating a track, or as you would seem to prefer, just occasionally check your current position against your plotted route.
Viewranger's website will give you more information - http://www.viewranger.com/en-gb
Hope this helps.

EDIT - Just seen your other post in the Welcome section and note that others have also recommended Viewranger.  I know there are quite a number of us here who rate it highly.

Note there's no need to even buy the 1:25K maps. You could start by just using the free maps it uses and see if they are sufficient for your use.

If you're carrying a paper map then you may not even need an app with mapping. There are a number of apps that will give you a UK grid reference which may be good enough combined with map and compass. Search for 'gps location uk' in the App Store.

Maps.Me, it's fast clean simple and free
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapswithme.maps.pro&hl=en_GB

Loads Open Street Map maps for free, convert your GPX to KML here http://gpx2kml.com/
and it loads into the program very easily after you email it to yourself.

A real physical compass to orientate yourself correctly and you're done.

Our group all have it on phones for backup, as well as a real GPS device, USB battery packs and maps. However it usually easier to whip out the phone for it that use the other methods we have.

It's not perfect, but what is? It's more than good enough though.
