Dartmoor trip questions
« on: 21:45:00, 12/01/15 »
Hi,
I'm thinking of a short trip to dartmoor in the summer but funds are tight. I live in Portsmouth, so access to a coach station is easy for me. Where would a good town to get a coach too would be easy to get to trails etc? Bus's would be fine.
Thanks!

You could aim to travel to Okehampton which would give you good access to the northern moors.  From here you could aim for West Mill & Yes Tors, lots to explore and plenty of good camping spots around that part.  Another option would be Princetown, from here you could almost walk in any direction for access direct to the moors.
Are you plainning on staying in accomadation or camping?

Princetown is not well served by public transport.  Exeter and Plymouth and possibly Newton Abbott or Ivybridge are better bets.
From Exeter buses are available to Okehampton and places on the east of the Moor. Newton Abbott might give easy access to Bovey Tracey and then onto the SE of the Moor.  Ivybridge gives instant access to the S moor.  And Plymouth offers regular buses to Ivybridge and Okehampton via Yelverton, Tavistock and the western fringes in between.

There is a youth hostel at Okehampton and some weekends trains run on to there from Exeter St Davids else there is a regular bus service - some nice walks from Okehampton too.
The longest journey starts with a single step

I just responded to a similar question.   Ivybridge is the start point of the 2 Moors Way and from the station is a shortish walk thruto the open moor.    It's on the main line to Plymouth so easy to get to.

Agree with Ivybridge.   It's on the main line to Plymouth and is just off the A38 so good for buses too.   From the station it's a walk through the town and you're on the open moor.    It's also the start (or finish) of the 2 Moors Way.

Newton Abbot does not offer any public transport on to Dartmoor. For immediate walking access it has to be
Ivybridge or Okehampton.

Au contraire.  ;)   OK so it's limited.
