[Trip Report] - The Old Man of Coniston
« on: 20:36:29, 24/04/06 »
Map: OS 1:25,000 English Lakes SW
Start: Car Park - 288971
Distance: 10.5 miles
Weather: Rain, Sleet & Harsh Wind!
Persons: Dominic, Chris, Carl and Martin.

Description:

We set off from the main CP on Walna Scar Road, heading around the back of the Old Man. We then continued to Brown Pike, Buck Pike and above Dow Crag. We continued along Goat’s Hause to ascend The Old Man. Climbing was steep here! While we were dressed as if assending Everest, we watched in amasement as we passed a casually dressed man cheerfully sauntering down from the summit with no more than golf umbrella as his main protection from the elements!

We then headed north from Levers Hause and continued to Swirl How. Then headed East to Weatherlam along Prison Band picking up a path south at Swirl Hause to descend. This is a most impressive valley offering commanding views of Prison Crag. This path continues through the Coppermines Valley, past the Youth Hostel, and back to the Walna Scar Road. We made a welcome stop for a pint of Jennings at the corner pub, before walking back up the steep road and collapsing into the car!

All in all this was a fantastic walk of peaks and ridges. Good paths, but some rocky descents. The view of Levers Tarn as we came down the valley was fantastic. At the bottom Chris offered everyone a Scotch Egg, and Martin broke into some Old Jamaicky.

The rain ensured that we kept the waterproofs on all the time, but this didn’t spoil our enjoyment. Despite the weather the views were breathtaking. At the end we all felt proud of ourselves. “Another Scotch Egg, anyone?”

MD.
