A bit late in posting this one but here goes. My stepson had talked me into paying half towards a 4 berth room at Black Sail Hut on Saturday 16th March. He and a friend planned to wild camp somewhere above Mosedale on the Friday night and meet me at the hostel Saturday evening. I decided to make a weekend of it so took Friday off work and booked myself into the Wasdale Inn.
I drove up on Friday to do a circuit of the fells above Wastwater returning along Miterdale.
I took the lane beside the school at Eskdale Green to the Forestry England parking area just beyond a gate. I was the only one parked there and it proved to be a very quiet walk.
I set off through the Miterdale Forest, this proved to the driest part of the walk but it was still pretty wet. It was in the trees that I met a party of 7-8 descending from Irton Fell, it didn’t see another soul all day.

After emerging from the plantation it was a squelchy slog most of the way although there weren’t any really bad bits where I thought I might end up with wet feet. The worst section was along the wall just after turning right at Irton Fell and heading towards Whin Rigg
