Whernside parking at the Dentdale/Deepdale end
« on: 21:50:25, 18/11/15 »
Ow dooz.

Anyone know if there’s any parking available nearer to Whernside’s northern end than in Dent itself?  I’ve found a route for Whernside I want to do (parking in Dent itself) but the distance is around the 12 mile mark (too much for me) so I’m trying to find parking that will plonk me a bit nearer to reduce the mileage to (ideally) under 10 miles.

Google streetview isn’t showing me anything obvious though I do feel like a local now I’ve cyber-driven along all the roads  ;D   Satellite imagery isn’t giving much away either  :-\

So, any locals or folks in the know who can enlighten me to any secret parking spots?  Village hall honesty boxes, roadside, P&D, kindly farmers or pubs?

Ta very muchly in advance for any info  O0

Hi Mel  :)  can you be a bit clearer about the route you have in mind? I'm guessing its the riverside path, then up by Whernside Manor?

Hi Peter (happy Birthday for yesterday by the way  O0  )  I was hoping you might spot this  :)

The route would be something like .... up past Whernside Tarns/Knoutberry Hill - Whernside trig - west down to what I think is Deepdale Lane - then roughly north to pick a route back to wherever I can get parked (Deepdale Lane or Dyke Hall Lane or somewhere near Whernside Manor?). So somewhere in that final "quarter" would be ideal  :)

Those lanes are outrageous narrow, we are talking one car wide. You may get lucky. There is the odd spot on the road that runs by the beck, north/south at the head of the valley after the turn up to Dent station. You also may find a spot by the cattle grid in Thornton Lane.  Sorry I am away from my maps for a few days so can't give you GRs.

How about parking near Ribblehead station-plenty of folk do-and getting train to Dent station? Steep walk down road, to valley, then nice riverside towards Dent village, then wherever back to Ribblehead n your car?

Or park at Dent Station and do a circuit from there if you want to do Deepdale

Parking or setting off from Dent Station makes the route about 14 miles or more  :o

Plus, I'm hoping to be staying in Dent (so I haven't ruled out the option of a taxi).

Ninthace - single track roads?  Are there any other kind in the Dales?  ;D   I'll have a look-see if I can find the places you mention though  :)

Cheers for the suggestions so far  O0

If you turn your attention to Deepdale Lane, there are lots of parking 'opportunities' there. Especially at the foot of the path off Whernside.
If you started at this point (near High Moss) you would descend down towards where the path from Dent meets you. (Turning right away from Dent to ascend Whernside)
You could go the other way around but that would involve quite a steep ascent at the end of your walk.
Interesting that you posted this I was thinking about it myself.
When are you planning it for

Bear in mind the hill down from Dent station into the valley is VERY steep!

I think I may have found some parking on/off the road between Whernside Manor and Mill Bridge  :D   Sadly, Google street view hasn't explored as far as this road so I can't "drive" down it to check it out  :'(   If it's right though, it puts the walk at between 8 and 9 miles which is perfik  O0

I shall bear the very steep bit in mind Ed but, looking at the map, all access to Dent from any direction involves a steep gradient somewhere or other so I'll just have to suck it and see.

Peter - I'm not sure when I'll be doing this at the moment.  Seeing as we're heading into Winter I can't imagine it will be before March next year at the earliest  :-\   I'm just armchair ambling, plotting and planning at the moment so I can jump to at a moment's notice.  Don't worry though, you'll get an invite when I do it seeing as you've escorted me up the other 2 of the Y3 Peaks and it would be wrong not to include you on my last one  :)

Back with my maps temporarily. I see I walked that section of road twice last year.  You may get lucky around Mill Bridge.  Beyond Whernside Manor the hedges feel like they can touch your wing mirrors on both sides in places.  Deepdale Lane is a gated road and again, as Peter says, you may get lucky, especially near the cattle grids but although this will gain you height at the start of your walk and give you a more direct route up Whernside from there, a circular walk is a bit more problematic, although not impossible.

I assume your intention is to use the Craven Way to get up Whernside?  On a positive note, the George and Dragon in Dent is the brewery tap for the Dent Brewery.  They do good food and the beer and cider are both excellent.

I had in mind descending the 'direct route' at he end of the walk, or sledge down depending on the weather. The High Moss area has plenty of places to park and is seldom visited. The idea being to start by descending to Deepdale Head, Bigholme Bridge and throw a right over to the Craven Way.

I agree, Peter, I was thinking more of Mel doing it the other way to take advantage of the height gain to minimise the ascent to the summit.  The return to High Moss would then just be tedious if you used the lanes and using the FPs from Hare Hole would still mean an uphill finish.  I think starting at Mill Bridge would be a more satisfying walk but your way round at least gives a downhill finish!

Taking the train from Ribblehead to Dent then walking along the Dales Way to take the Craven Way up and over Knoutberry and Whernside  to Ribblehead and driving back to Dent would my preferred way of doing the route though.

I think my preferred plan would be to do the route anti-clockwise – partly because I like the idea of the views I think there’ll be walking “into” the valley head at Deepdale and also the more open views walking down the nose of Whernside. I realise this means a steeper ascent than descent but that is a bonus for me as it doesn’t aggravate my Achilles tendon as much.

Starting at Mill Bridge would be my preferred choice, although starting from Deepdale/Thornton Lane and doing it anti-clockwise would give a killer of an uphill finish but at least there would be a good ole gap between the ascents.  My tendon may appreciate that but I doubt my thighs would  ;D

Cheers for the info on the George and Dragon pub Ninthace.  Seeing as I won't be driving I may just partake of a glass of ye olde falling down water  :)

Peter - sledging down Whernside?  :o   Sounds fun  :D   Part of me would like to see a bit of snow up there but the jury's still out on whether I'd like to be walking in it  :-\
