Super kestrel pic :)

That's an amazing crane/dredger thing - what is the history of the site?
So many paths yet to walk, so little time left

That looks like a drag line excavator that they use in opencast mining. It seems that it may have been abandoned at a time when scrap reclamation reached a particularly low price. I bet the wildlife thrive on that. Plenty of safe shelter in that.

In Northumberland there are quite a few nature reserves around man made lake on ex opencast sites.

Another one for BWW ex industrial use put to the benefit of walkers.
Too little, too late, too bad......

I'm no doubt stealing pleb's thunder here  8)  but information on the dragline can be found at http://www.walkingdragline.org

RSPB St Aidans has its own site at https://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves-and-events/reserves-a-z/st-aidans/

I regularly visit nearby Rothwell and the canal pictured, along with St Aidans, has been a training track for running and also makes a pleasant evening stroll (from Woodlesford Lock)

Lovely to see old industrial sites taken back by, and for, nature.

Thank you Jimbob & OneF

Agree, it's amazing how quickly nature with a little bit of help can re-establish. I guess that if 'we' became extinct we'd not be missed much and evidence of us soon be obliterated.
