TR Mungrisdale Common Sat 25 Jan 20
« on: 20:56:58, 28/01/20 »
Day walks for us at the weekend, the weather forecast wasn't great and due to get worse over night. We drove to Threlkeld and parked near the Blencathra Centre. We thought we would do Mungrisdale Common, one of Beefy's 3ers and a new Wainwright for Squeaky.

Looking a bit grim as we leave the car park

Walking above the Glenderaterra

It started raining as soon as we left the car park so it was on with the waterproofs and they stayed on all day.

Walla Crag and Catbells seen in the mist

Great Calva appearing in the clag

After we crossed Roughten Gill we started ascending on a trod leading up to the summit of Mungrisdale Common

Waterfall in Sinen Gill

We crossed Sinen Gill and continued climbing and soon we were in the clag that was covering most of the Lake District fells.

On Mungrisdale Common summit

Nothing to see so we quickly left heading left on a different trod that leads to the Cloven Stone. The wind was stronger up here and it was blowing the rain straight into our faces as we walked.

On the descent to The Stake

We descended from the Cloven Stone as quickly as we could only slowing when we reached the boggy bit near The Stake. We said hello to a man with two dogs who was crossing the stile as we plodged toward it.
Skiddaw House can be seen right of Centre. We stopped for some lunch sheltering from the wind behind the wall. It was a quick stop only 20 minutes, we were damp and we started feeling cold. We walked quickly to the Guide Stone then turned left to return on the same path we'd used walking up the valley earlier

High Rigg and Tewet Tarn (just about) seen in this shot

Our route was Blencathra Centre - Roughten Gill - Sinen Gill - Mungrisdale Common - Cloven Stone - The Stake - Guide Stone - Roughten Gill - Blencathra Centre 7.25 mile and 550m ascent.

Interesting route to MC never done that one. Despite it's reputation on a nice day there are good views from MC

Walked to Cumbrian Way route to MC via the west side of the valley a few weeks ago during a cold snap before doubling back and doing Skiddaw - clear skies and ice under my feet.  Must admit the little valleys are quite beautiful, that was the one and only time I've actually had any views from MC too!

Squeaky looks very unsure at the summit cairn, even she realises its not all that as a hill.

That looks perfect weather for Mungrisdale Common, though the puddle round the cairn looks smaller than usual - has someone taken the plug out?

I do love that area round the back of Blencathra and over to Skiddaw - big views.

Interesting route to MC never done that one.

I've returned that way a few times but I think that is the first time I've ascended from Roughten Gill. I have been up from The Stake before. It misses the soggy boggy path from Blencathra or Glenderamackin Col so it is quite a pleasant route.

Another one for Squeaky O0

And she has no idea  :D

the little valleys are quite beautiful

I do like the Glenderaterra and Glenderamackin valleys  :)

A lovely quiet corner, April.

There were a few people about on the main path through the valley, the car park was packed! Nobody was daft enough to follow us up onto MC  ;)

Squeaky looks very unsure at the summit cairn, even she realises its not all that as a hill.

She wasn't impressed with the wind and rain and was living up to her name

the puddle round the cairn looks smaller than usual - has someone taken the plug out?

We expected it to be much wetter than it was  :)

Good write up and pics April  :)   I also remember Mungrisdale Common's "summit tarn" being bigger than that.  I have a pic somewhere of Peter's dog Scally (RIP) swimming to the cairn!

You might be getting mixed up with the small tarnlet just before the "summit"

Here is Rhino's dog Handsome Jack (RIP) having a drink in April 2016 and the puddle looks much the same

The cairn has got smaller.
How many photos of a cairn in a puddle on a flat hill can we find, this one is from 2012.

From 2017 - and a very soggy walk on the Isle of Scalpay in the Outer Hebrides:
