Boots resole question.
« on: 12:10:11, 24/04/20 »
Hello, I'm brand new here, so please forgive me if this has been asked before.
I've got a very comfortable pair of Mammut walking boots from GoOutdoors, a couple of years old.
I've worn out the right heel.
So, my question. Do I go back to GO (are they open in these strange times) and have them sent back to Mammut, and how long will that take, or, do I approach one of the sites I notice have been mentioned on here.
Thank-you in advance for any help / advice.

I believe all branches of Go Outdoors are closed and are only trading online at the moment. In any case they will not want to know re repairs it's not a service they offer. https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/covid-19

It might be worth contacting Mammut direct but in common with a lot of other brands the chances are that they will use LSR below anyway for their repairs.

This is as good a place as any to start https://lancashiresportsrepairs.co.uk/walking-boot-repairs-and-resoles/

Thank-you for the replies. I had seen the Lancashire repair people online, and wondered if they were the people to approach. Burnley isn't all that far from me (about 45 minutes drive), so fairly local in normal circumstances.
I'll give them a try.
Thank-you. :)

Is this the cobblers in Stockton Heath? If so, I’ve used them before and would recommend them.

I had Raichle boots re-soled (before they merged with Mammut) about 10 (?) years ago. I think I used LSR for that (link posted earlier) if I remember it correctly.

They did a proper job. However, you need to see if it is worth it because your outer sole get replaced but your mid-sole also wears out (compresses etc) and so does the leather and goretex lining. If the boot is in otherwise great shape it can be worth it, but not always.

Nowadays I don't resole my boots anymore. If the threads are worn out, I just demote the boots to use just for day-hikes, walks in the park or training, and use new boots for multiday hikes when carrying weight.

I use Lancashire Sports Repairs, have done it twice for boots and once for a jacket, the items came back as good as new so no doubt about the quality and value for money. The boots were Lowa and Aku, the jacket was ME.
Everything was done online and by parcel delivery so you do not need to visit.
I do not know how they are operating at the moment.
I recently asked Mountain Equipment about a repair and they directed me to LSR, so they come well recommended.

I live close to a specialist boot repairer (Feet First, just outside Chesterfield) that are also very good, if that is any closer to you.

I’ve used them a few times, always been happy with quality of sole replacement.

The only word of caution I’d give is that the repair can be quite pricey, around 60 quid (are Lancashire Sports around same?)...so you need to be confident rest of boot (uppers, and waterproof membrane if not a leather boot) is in good nick before repair is worthwhile. (See Birdman has made exactly same point, rather more elegantly.)

£60 sounds about right.  I paid something of that order for the factory in Richmond to resole our Altbergs.

Just an update re closures due to Covid-19 to save any wasted time/journeys. Obviously normal repair times are likely to be increased.

*COVID-19 UPDATE PLEASE READ*
Following the recent government broadcast on Monday 23rd March, we have made the decision to close down the majority of our premises, as a result we will not be open to the public.  We are still accepting parcels but due to the reduction in staff it will take some time to complete your repairs.  We do have a small customer service team who will still be operating should you require any assistance. To the many customers who have sent their items to us, please rest assured that your items are safe and logged on our repair system.
We would like to thank all of our customers for their continued custom, patience and support during this time. It is a rapidly changing situation and we will continue to monitor it closely in the hope that we will be able to resume to full capacity in the near future.

Hello. Thank-you to everyone who replied to my enquiry. I've been in touch with LSR and am going to send my boots off to them. They've a VERY long wait time at the moment (45 working days!), but will fast track to 10 days for an additional £15.

Considering that my jacket repair pre covid was 30 days that's not bad.

The turn round at the Altberg factory for resoling was of that order or longer - that's how come I came to own two pairs of boots.
