If u dont have GPS/smartphone etc and just depend on paper maps, how to measure? String on map would be pretty approximate......its what I usually do.

String, routes from books/on line or I plot them on here http://bikehike.co.uk/index.php
Neither are very accurate but I just work on the principal that the inaccuracies + or - will cancel each other out in the end.

Thanks to a recent post on here http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?action=post;quote=508661;topic=35686.0 I now use 'measure distance' using the OS option on Bing Maps.
Oddly it still differs quite a lot from a friend's GPS, by1.1 miles on one walk 11.3 on Bing v 12.4 GPS.
Explanation anyone?

GPS systems work out where they are at fixed intervals,  Because they are not 100% accurate they come up with a slightly different answer each time even if the unit has not physically moved so you will get a distance travelled even if you are still sitting outside the pub. The more frequent the fix, the more the error will build.  Therefore if you a slow walker, a GPS will tell you have gone further than someone who walks the same route over a shorter time.  Factor in the fact that  maps are not accurate anyway and are a flat representation of a 3D world  then you get a discrepancy.
I find I get the most "accurate" result if I import my gps trace into GoogleEarth and then use the Show Elevation Profile function to give me distance walked, total ascent and descent.

Aah, mmm, so the only way to accurately measure distance walked would be to secure the end of a piece of string to the car, unravel it as you walk until arriving back at the car again, cut string or mark carefully then retrace your steps rewinding the string as you go. On arriving home unwind string, measuring until you reach the end or mark. Note distance. Rewind string in preparation for next walk.
