Cyprus
« on: 09:21:36, 23/09/09 »
We are going out to Cyprus for a fortnight next month
We are staying in the Paphos area but have a hire car so hope to get up into the Trodos Mountains and up round the Arkamas Penninsula.
If anyone has walked there before and has any must do walks or tips they would be much appreciated
Thanks

I have stayed at a friends Villa in the village of Pia near Coral Bay which is in the Paphos area. I have never ventured into the mountains but the area has lots of goat herding tracks which I used to have quite a few really good walks. The terrain is very undulating so you do get a good work out. This may be good between hill walks.

I love Cyprus and remember a holiday in May spent in the snow at the Ski Club of Cyprus in the Troodos....beware of confusing road signs too, got to one junction in the road and both ways said no entry.  :D

There's a book that includes walks called Landscapes of Cyprus by Geoff Daniel that should be available on Amazon.

I've been a few times up in the Troodos, but didn't get much walking done, apart from around the Roman remains. We did end up driving on what looked like a ski slope, so beware the road signs.

I believe the Avakas Gorge on the Akamas peninsula is good. Much of the walking I did reminded me of the Med in general - lots of scrubby limestone.

Lots to see and do though - have a good trip.

Not sure when next month you are in Cyprus but maybe something to bear in mind Jane, the Cyprus Automobile Association holds its annual car rally in the Troodos mountains starting on the 9th Oct until the 11th.

thanks - we just miss that, we go out on the 14th. It may have been a little dusty and noisy in the hills then!
