A caving forum I am on has a running topic of 'cryptic caves'. I thought it could be fun for mountains.
Basically someone posts a crossword-type clue for the name of a mountain or hill. Others post answers until one gets it right. The torch then passes to them to post a clue and so on..
A very easy one to start it off:
"Attempt to waft air." (6)
-
Tryfan ?
-
Indeed. Your turn...
-
Sounds good, how about ''winters deposit above''
-
Snowdon?
-
OK - How about...
"The greyhound's find decays trail mix"
(7, 1, 7)
-
OK - How about...
"The greyhound's find decays trail mix"
(7, 1, 7)
You have to get one right to get a turn!
-
Ah :(
well, still waiting for ArchaeoRoutes to post a new one then, as I think he got that right :-X
-
Is your's Carnedd y Filiast?
-
Yup. Well done!
-
how does that work? translating something from Welsh doesn't make it cryptic.
-
Carnedd y Filiast is an anagram of "find decays trail" from the clue (the "mix" meaning jumbled, as an anagram is). And Carnedd y Filiast means "the Greyhound".
Quite a good clue, I thought - I just didn't know the mountain! ;D
-
oh, ok.
-
And Carnedd y Filiast means "the Greyhound".

Dunsinane Hill ?
-
Nice idea but sadly not. despite the Scottish play you need to look south of the border near a town King David of Scotland set up court.
The first part of the clue is a reference to witches in general. The second part is specific to the name of the hill.
I am quaking with excitement to see if the spirit moves anyone about this one.

pendle hill?

That would be Monte Rosa then?

Yeah, 'cos no one's heard of Monte Rosa, have they??!!

The original poster didn't lay out any rules. It seems that cryptic clues are all that is required. If no one posts any guesses then an extra clue should be given out and so on until you loose the will to live.
It's just a random thread - take a chill pill O0
I'll be along in a little while with a new one, once I've studied the mountain ranges of Uzbeckistan ;)

Although I'd not heard of it I still worked its name out from the clues given. So far we've had some easy clues and some harder ones and if they are not guessed then people offer more info
I guess I could have claimed Monte Rosa as a win but didn't feel it would be fair to do so.

I will be Patriotic if I get another chance to post a clue! It could be in Yorkshire ;D O0

At least the next time someone asks you to name 4 famous mountains in the Alps, you'll be able to do it.
Oh, and by the way, I'd never heard of Monte Rosa until I bought some crampons named after it. You then start noticing the name more when you're reading books, etc, when previously it would have just skipped through your mental radar.

So it is a hill in Yorkshire whose name is something to do with Dads Army but is it 'near Langsett' then, which to me is a reservoir in Derbyshire.
Nearly there
Langsett is very small village. and it's in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, ::)
There's a few houses Tea Room and pub, and barn. The res and barn were named after the village.
Now search the nearby hills O0
-
Langsett is out beyond Stocksbridge with the reservoir, I think, being over the boarder in Derbyshire though I could be wrong about that. I've searched the map in my head and there are only Langsett and Howden moors that come to mind.

Mr (Percy) Shaw's Invention/Vision is the Cats Eye. Sounds like Catstye

I underlined the outskirts in archaeoroutes reply :) i.e. the outskirts of Byrness and Bowness are b and s ;) To get back to the original clue - Bother in the outskirts of Byrness ............ think of another word for bother between b and s and you have the answer.
Which is also a northern British name for a species of trees and sounds like fools

Garth Hill
Hugh Grant starred in the Film The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain.
The film is where two English cartographers visit the small town in South Wales of Ffynnon Garw, to measure what is claimed to be the "first mountain inside of Wales by the villagers". .
It's said the book & film was based on Garth and Garth Hill

Bush cast as time traveller ?
I think this one is correct? :-\
Mount Sinai? : Moses and the 10 Commandments.
Bush, refers to the Burning Bush
Moses was the first name accredited to The Time Traveller in the Book "The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells ?
The name "Denton Morris, Moses" was used in a later film

Is Mount Sinia Correct ?

Nope. It's much more straightforward than that.
The Bush you're looking for is not a rose, or any other type of plant for that matter.

No they haven't.
You're making it far too complicated. The clue leads directly to the answer not via half a dozen obscure links. You actually almost arrived at the answer earlier and then walked straight past it looking for something else :D

Well children in German is Kinder (not sure why Dresden was chosen), how bear gives scout I'm not sure :D

For me the main clue was Children in Dresden (Germany). Kinder is the German word for Children :)
Bear Cub Scouts, USA/Cub Scouts UK = Scout. :D
There cant be many Hills with Kinder in their name. Put them together.
Kinder Scout O0

Bear (Grylls) is something to do with the scouts.
I got children = kin, but didn't know kinder was German for children.
Not sure where the Dresden reference fits in either.

For me the main clue was Children in Dresden (Germany). Kinder is the German word for Children :)
I think using 'Dresden' as a reference for Germany is unnecessarily misleading.
-
Dresden was just the first place in Germany I thought of. It wasn't intended to mislead.
The Bear bit was a reference to Bear Grylls who is, I think, the Chief Scout.
The last time Kinder Scout came up the clue was completely different, referencing eggs. I think it is OK to repeat answers as some hills do lend themselves to this.

Looks like this thread going to die a death unless Strider (who's been online a few times since their last answer) or someone else post another clue :(
-
I think a time limit should be set in which the next clue should be posted. How about 24 hours? So if the first person that correctly answered the last clue hasn't posted a new clue within 24 hours then they've effectively forfeited their go and someone else can post a new clue to keep the game moving.

Oh right! Well done, in that case ... O0
The Fab reference was to the Beatles, who were often known as the Fab Four. Otherwise, pretty much spot on with your breakdown. Cut = gash, perhaps = er, brush = broom sounds like brum and fab = IV as above. O0

Your going to have to explain how you got Stiperstones from, "Michael's timbre about right: five miles of Quartzite" ::)
OK, it was a bit harder than my last clue, which didn't seem to take much solving. ;D
Michael = Michael Stipe (REM singer hence timbre, and Michael's gives Stipe's). Timbre also means "tones". Put those round "r" for right = Stipe(r)s-tones = Stiperstones, which is a five mile ridge of Quartzite! O0

Sorry AC for not answering earlier. I can see how you're interpreting the clue, but it's not any of those. It's a subsidiary top on one of Wainwright's Outlying Fells and also a Birkett top. The name is an apt description of the summits appearance when seen in profile
I'll put one of your answers in the clue, might make it easier ;)

OK, so it's an anagram ("mess") of some letters in the first part of the clue, with the letters in the middle part of the clue omitted (hence "missing"). The location is in the North Yorks Moors NP, and the answer has been the subject of a recent TR on the forum.
Hopefully that helps ..... :-\

The general advice for cryptic clue solvers is to ignore punctuation marks except question marks and exclamation marks. They're usually included to misdirect the solver, or put in the wrong place - try this
Climbing hill, tapers off
The clue is now in two parts - the first part is the English translation of the Gaelic name, the second contains the name (in one form or another) ;)
