Title: Small scissors please?
Post by: zuludog on 13:14:39, 30/12/18
I know this is hardly a major purchase, but I'm looking for a pair of small, or travel, scissors, to be kept in my first aid kit
They would be used for - cutting plasters and adhesive tape; cutting my toenails (hope I don't put you off your tea); and opening stubborn packets of food

Any suggestions please? Note that I don't want those on a Swiss Army Knife as I find them too small and fiddly

They usually have a bit of plastic tube over the points to keep them from progging stuff in the bag. If you need some spare then a drinking straw does the job, I've found.

There's a whole host of cheapo folding 'travel' scissors available on Amazon, ebay etc for a couple of quid or so.

Yes, I've been looking at them, and that's the problem - they all look a bit cheap & nasty, and I wondered if any of them are much use?

There is a model by Fiskars, which is generally a good make, but even that has some poor reviews
Perhaps I'll go to a haberdasher's and see if they have some half decent sewing scissors

I was going to recommend Fiskars embroidery scissors, I usually have a pair with me, though they have a very sharp point so you do need them in something.
Prices vary so it is worth looking on line.

I have used these professionally for many years (don't ask) and they are beautifully sharp and precise, however the blades are brittle, ie they will not take much torsional force, and the ends can snap off.
These could suit your needs better:

I have a Swiss Card made by Victorinox which has usable scissors long with a knife blade and some other bits. Very light.

It's really.a Swiss army knife in a card format.

Definitely going to ask...
I also use them professionally and agree they are not great as a screwdriver/lever.

As has been already suggested, The Fiskars sewing scissors, are just the right size, and are available for less than £10.
Bought my mother a pair for Christmas, to replace some very blunt and well used Fiskars, purchased over twenty years ago.
Very high quality, and about the right size for a first aid kit.
They may be designed for sewers, but they make a great all round scissors for trimming plasters or bandages.
They are very high quality, and represent good value, and should last many years of good use.

Thanks for your advice
I think I'll get the Fiskars 10 cm Embroidery Scissors

There is a haberdashery stall in my local market, I'll try there in a few days time. If they don't have them, it'll be Amazon

I purchased mine from a sewing specialist on Ebay,
They only cost £7.99 delivered, which was a keen price, and are really nice quality scissors.

I got my scissors today - Fiskars Classic Embroidry Scissors, 10cm

I've been playing around with them at home, on paper, card, sewing thread, duck tape, and food packets
They're very good, cutting precisely & evenly; well made, and quite strong considering the size of them
Also I can get my finger & thumb into the holes quite easily

Try to avoid paper and card to keep them sharp.

Years ago, if your scissors became blunt over extended use, trying to resharpen them was extremely difficult.
You might as well have thrown them away, and bought a new pair, but Fiskars now make a small sharpener, that is very easy to use.
Most of us will have little use for one, but those who use their scissors on a daily basis, can now buy a sharpener, so that's good news if your after one.
