Walks around Aviemore?
« on: 19:53:19, 28/04/12 »
Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of booking a couple of days up in Aviemore next month. Does anyone know of any local (dog friendly) walks? I'm not mega fit so hoping to keep my feet on the flat. Possible visits whilst I'm there so far include Loch Morlich or Loch Garten; is anyone familiar with these places?

Many thanks,

Natalie  :)

The walk from Loch Morlich up to Rothiemurcus Lodge, where I once encountered a friendly dog (but that's another story), is a good one, and if you are feeling energetic you can head on up to the Chalamain Gap and follow the path to Sugarbowl at the foot of the Cairngorm ski range.

The walk from Glenmore to Ryvoan bothy is a nice low-level walk too.
I didn't find the mountains - the mountains found me

Nat88 that is an excellent link by lasramblas.

the ones I've been on are:

Lochan Eileen...
http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/loch-an-eilein.shtml
this is an excellent circuit round a lake.   It is very very beautiful
and incredibly wow.  I really really love this walk and the dogs do too.

The Green Lochan walk...
http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/ryvoan.shtml
me and my daughter used to imagine that the Green Lochan was a magical place
and sit and make wishes and the dogs loved to paddle there too.

For a lazy day we used to walk along Loch Morlich
http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/cairngorms/loch-morlich.shtml
and enjoy time just being there... and the dogs liked it too!

We have done some of the other walks, but these 3 are our favourite lower
level walks around Aviemore.

All the best Nat88 and looking forward to hearing where you went.

There are loads of info on walks in almost every shop/pub/visitor centre in the Aviemore area.
Lots to chose from........walked to Lochan an Eilean yesterday. Great walk! There is a small gallery there
where you can sit at a log fire, drink coffee and chat (toilets too!).
Visit Loch Insh as well and watch the ospreys fishing...........

Thanks everyone, these are great suggestions. It certainly sounds a lovely place. Are there ospreys fishing in other lochs than the RSPB one then (can't remember the name  ::) )? I'd love to see an osprey as I'm mad about wildlife, but unfortunately I probably won't get to see much due to my dog - she's very hyperactive  :D

there are lots of places where you will see Ospreys.
Loch Insh is a good place for seeing them catching fish.
There are two RSPB bird hides there as well.
Better to leave the dog somewhere else when going to the hides, etc.
Especially if she runs around. You will need to keep her on a lead at all times.
I know it is frowned upon if a dog is running around.........I'm sure
your's well behaved............
At Boat of Garten there is a centre with a video link which shows the nest, etc. probably
on the web too.

ps. Just back from the area......weather absolutely great Just like summer!

Oh wow thanks, I'll keep my eyes peeled round those places then  :)

I've booked the cabin and my train fares, so just got to plan my walks now  :D . I'm a bit of a curse where weather is concerned though - my first camping trip was supposed to happen on that Tuesday earlier this month when we got all the snow and gales  ::) . The week before was balmy! Thanks for all your help everyone, that website is great

If it was me looking for a flattish walk then I would Park up at Corie Cas and have a stroll across to Sneachda and beyond........simply stunning views.

Or maybe a stretch of the Lairigh, it could turn into a big days out! All depends on your fittness levels.

Enjoy
One day your life will flash before your eyes.........make sure it's worth watching!!!
