Can this be done with a dog won't be going up striding edge.

Yes, it can. I’ve gone over Swirral Edge with a dog, it did need help with one large step but that might just be the specific route we took.


Alternatively you could go up the track to Helvellyn youth hostel and continue past that which is an easy zigzag. It takes you up to the ridge about a mile north of Helvellyn summit.

I have done both Swirral and Striding Edges with dogs. They only needed assisting in one or two places on Striding Edge. Can't recall any need for assistance on Swirral.

Although swirral in ice and snow is a different story
